A critical analysis of Professor Andrew Tracey’s contribution to African music pedagogy and the field of applied ethnomusicology
The research presented in this thesis is based on my interest and experience in forms of African music, ethnomusicology, and studying mbira with Professor Emeritus Andrew Tracey. When I arrived in South Africa in 2019 to join Rhodes University’s Applied Ethnomusicology programme, I chose to study the mbira with Tracey as the idea of learning more about Zimbabwe through music was important to the formation of my identity. Through the lens of embodied learning and a practice-based approach in this research, I evaluate how Tracey’s numerous contributions to African music pedagogy have improved prospects for African music scholars and students in terms of contributing to the goals of applied ethnomusicology. The primary purpose of this thesis is to respond to the absence of serious scrutiny of existing pedagogical approaches to African music at universities across South Africa. The contribution this research makes will be valuable to African music programmes across the continent as well as to practitioners of African traditional instruments, such as the marimba, mbira, timbila xylophones, nyanga pan pipes, and valimba xylophones. The thesis comprises five chapters. The first presents an introduction to the research, and its goals, procedures and approaches, along with an outline of the subsequent chapters. Tracey’s biography is covered in the second chapter. A consideration of the state of African music teaching in other African countries such as Ghana, Kenya, and Zimbabwe; the history of African music; and the state of African music pedagogy in tertiary institutions in South Africa constitutes the third chapter. Chapter 4 comprises an analysis of Tracey’s articles and data gathered from interviews, as well as my personal reflections as Tracey’s student. The final chapter presents a summary of the preceding chapters, the study’s findings, and suggestions for further research. A multidisciplinary approach was used for this thesis. The results finds that Tracey’s articles had six common themes which he wrote about and are a contribution to African music pedagogy. The invisible teacher: The teacher envisaged in the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) English First Additional Language (EFAL) Further Education and Training (FET) Phase
Educational policy documents, which are intended to enlighten teachers about what they should teach and how they should assess learners, contain both language and knowledge. How this knowledge is construed through language may reveal the kind of teacher envisaged by the document, and the assumptions made regarding the dispositions of these educators. There is a plethora of research on the relationship between the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement for English First Additional Language in the Further Education and Training Phase (CAPS-EFAL) and its impact on the learner in the classroom, but little evidence of research related to how curriculum documents envisage the teacher, and linguistic research pertaining to CAPS-EFAL. This research aims to use linguistic analysis to discover how the teacher is envisaged in this document, while speaking to the broader subject of the relationship between teacher and curriculum policy. This study adopts a framework which inspects this language using Systemic Functional Linguistics to analyse language in relation to its functions in social contexts, and the instructional knowledge built in CAPS-EFAL through applying elements of Legitimation Code Theory, analysing processes of knowledge production and recontextualisation. An investigation of the language revealed assumptions that the envisaged teacher is one who is already highly trained in aspects of language teaching and classroom methodology and pedagogy. While the analysis also revealed a high level of guidance for the teacher, there was a strong focus on the knowledge within the curriculum, and several assumptions made regarding the teacher’s prior knowledge before encountering or utilising the document. The analysis also revealed that CAPS-EFAL acknowledges that the teacher requires a sound knowledge of technical terminology related to language teaching, as well as general classroom pedagogies and routines. In addition, the document assumes that the disposition of the teacher is one who can make decisions without the need for absolute confirmation or authority from curriculum documentation. Overall, the analysis revealed an élite code in terms of Specialization; CAPS-EFAL is therefore based on the legitimacy of both specialised knowledge and the disposition of the teacher.Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, Linguistics and Applied Language Studies, 202
Chaos!
Chaos! is a combination of short prose forms in fragments that tackles difficult topics such as troubled marriages, child molestation, rape, infidelity and abuse in every way, whether it is mental, emotional or physical. The stories contain a lot of horrific and violent acts that, often times in this day and age, happen behind closed doors or sometimes even openly, yet not a lot of people are ready to talk about these topics. In my thesis, I go into the minds of those that are abusive and those that are on the receiving end of abuse. In doing so, I aim to explore all the dynamics of abuse. Abusers, as I have portrayed in my thesis, tend to have a deranged sense of reasoning in performing abusive acts and one thing that is important to note is that, more than likely, in their own heads and according to their own reasoning, the behaviour that they act on is very much rational and reasonable.Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, School of Languages and Literatures, 202
A sea is brewing
My thesis is a collection of poems that draws on the complexity of not belonging in places, with people, or within families. I engage my own alienation as well as that of my parents, black people generally, and women in particular. I take inspiration from Uruguayan poet Fabián Severo’s autobiographical long poem, Night in the North, which chronicles the poet’s experience of growing up in linguistic and cultural borderlands. I am also influenced by Chilean poet Carmen García’s ability to move between the concrete and the abstract in translations of her poems from the collection Gotas sobre loza fría. As much as my poems traverse a metaphysical space, they are also set in concrete places – Tutura, Gcuwa, Johannesburg, and Cape Town. Like Chilean artist Cecilia Vicuña’s Spit Temple, I move between the physical and spiritual realms for a better understanding of my estrangement. I also draw on South African poet Mangaliso Buzani’s book, a naked bone, for its fluid combination of line and prose poetry. I write in isiXhosa and English as a reflection of my mixed cultural and linguistic existence. Revitalisation and indigenisation of the Science curriculum through drum making, drumming, music and dance
The integration of IK is a common phenomenon in many postcolonial states, where it is viewed as a means to redress the injustices of the colonial era. It is believed that the recognition of IK in education represents an acknowledgement of diversity and other ways of knowing. In Namibia, for instance, the National Curriculum for Basic Education encourages the integration of IK in Science teaching. However, this goal is still far from being achieved because the curriculum seems to be silent on how teachers should integrate IK into their teaching. As a result, research shows that many Science teachers in Namibia seem to find it difficult to integrate IK into their science teaching because they were not properly trained to do so during both their pre-service and in-service training. This suggests that there is a dire need to empower science teachers who are implementers of the curriculum on appropriate pedagogical content knowledge on how to integrate IK into their science teaching in particular. It is against this backdrop that this interventionist study sought to explore how to mobilise the indigenous technology of drum making, drumming, music and dance for cultural revitalisation and indigenisation of the science curriculum. The study is underpinned by an interpretivist paradigm and augmented with an indigenous research paradigm. The interpretivist paradigm enabled me to understand the teachers’ perspectives in their contexts. On the other hand, within the indigenous research paradigm, I used the Ubuntu perspective which afforded each of us an opportunity to understand each other’s ways of knowing, doing and being. Within these two complementary paradigms, a qualitative case study approach was employed. The case study was in the form of intervention with six Grade 10 Physics teachers from three senior secondary schools in the Kavango West Region in Namibia. Moreover, a critical friend who was a lecturer at the university and expert community members of the Unongo Cultural Youth Group who are the custodians of the cultural heritage. Data were generated using semi-structured interviews, workshop discussions (audio-recorded), observations (participatory and lesson observations), stimulated recall interviews as well as journal reflections. Vygotsky’s Socio-cultural Theory, Ogunniyi’s Contiguity Argumentation Theory and Mavhunga and Rollnick’s Topic-specific Pedagogical Content Knowledge were used as the theoretical lenses in this study. The data gathered were analysed thematically and then categorised into sub-themes and themes. The findings of the study revealed that tapping into the cultural heritage of community members through giving them a voice has great potential to revitalise and indigenise the science curriculum. It also emerged in this study that storytelling is a potential instructional strategy to make science accessible and relevant to learners. The use of the indigenous technology of drum making, drumming, music and dance contributed to the Physics teachers’ agency and empowered them to co-develop their learning and teaching support materials in the form of exemplar lesson plans that integrated IK. Moreover, their pedagogical content knowledge was enhanced through enacting such exemplar lessons and thereafter reflecting on them. The study thus recommends that those in academia should promote the use of indigenous technologies as hubs for mediating the learning of science concepts. It also recommends that learners should be taken out of their science classrooms into the community to learn IK and wisdom from expert community members, something which could assist them in understanding the science taught at school. This might also benefit teachers in effectively implementing the integration of IK in schools and thereby use learners’ cultural heritage as a starting point to enrich meaningful and authentic learning.Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Education, Education, 202
The use and value of wild harvested provisioning ecosystem services along a landscape heterogeneity gradient in rural South Africa
Provisioning ecosystem services (PES) are typically crucial to rural livelihoods, especially in developing countries. However, the links between PES and local biodiversity or landscape heterogeneity are poorly explored. Here, we examined the extent of use and value of locally harvested wild, terrestrial and marine PES (such as wild foods, traditional medicines, firewood, building materials and others) in three villages (35–40 households per village) along a gradient of decreasing landscape heterogeneity. Households at the site with the highest landscape heterogeneity used a greater array of PES (9 ± 4) compared to the intermediate (5 ± 3) and least heterogenous (0.9 ± 0.8) sites. This resulted in a significantly greater annual value of PES to local livelihoods at the most diverse site (US1 120 ± 1 313 at the intermediate site and only US$105 ± 193 at the least heterogeneous site. This study shows the importance of access to a diversity of landscapes and PES to support rural livelihoods, which is frequently overlooked in PES valuation studies and in situations of land use change where landscape heterogeneity may decline
Evaluation of functionalized silver and silica nanoparticles for the removal of deoxyribonucleic acid conveying antibiotics resistance genes from water
Antibiotic resistance genes ARGs are recognized as a serious public health emergency linked to extensive use of antibiotics by humans and animals as a prophylactic agent that treats and prevents infections. The occurrence of high concentrations being identified in wastewater treatment plants, rivers, etc is due to untreated effluents being discharged from households, hospitals, agriculture, and pharmaceutical industries. The application of adequate treatment techniques and material for the removal of bacteria DNA conveying ARGs from the effluents before their release to the environment cannot be overemphasized. Adsorption techniques seem to be effective due to their easy design, operation, and ability to regenerate adsorbents for use without producing toxic by-products. This concept was employed for the removal of bacteria DNA conveying ARGs from simulated aqueous solution, effluents from hospital, river and WWTPs using silver and silica metallic nanoparticles. This thesis investigated the effectiveness of metallic nanoparticles containing silver AgNPs and mesoporous silica nanoparticles MSNPs as well as magnetite Fe3O4 functionalized with 4 4hydroxyphenyl 2 262-terpyridine onto their surface, for the removal of bacteria DNA conveying antibiotic resistance genes from water samples from hospitals, river, and wastewater treatment plants WWTPs. Silver nanoparticles AgNPs of different molar concentrations 0.1M, 0.5M and 1.0 M and mesoporous silica nanoparticles MSNPs adsorbents were successfully synthesized in their original states and surface functionalization achieved by incorporating magnetite Fe3O4 and 4 4 hydroxyphenyl 2 2 6 2 terpyridine on the silver AgNPs Fe3O4 and silica MSNPs TPPY surfaces respectively. Their effectiveness as adsorbent for the removal of bacteria DNA conveying ARGs from aqueous solutions and real water/wastewater samples were investigated. The DNA uptake by the as-synthesized AgNPs and MSNPs were compared to the functionalized AgNPs Fe3O4 and MSNPsTPPY by determining the adsorbents with the highest removal efficiencies. All as synthesized and functionalized adsorbents were characterized by SEM, EDX, FTIR, XRD, UV spectroscopy and PZC before the removal process. The extraction of genomic DNA from antibiotic-resistant Enterococcus faecium and Vibrio parahaemolyticus was successfully achieved via the boiling method. Antibiotic susceptibility test was conducted using the disk diffusion method before the commencement of genomic DNA extraction. Molecular characterization via gel electrophoresis confirmed the presence of resistance genes at different base pairs. Adsorption batch experiment were investigated, and the best optimum parameters were evaluated through the influence of pH, contact time, initial DNA concentration, adsorbent dose, and competitive ions for each sorption process. The rate determining step were determined by fitting kinetic models such as Natarajan and Khalaf first order, pseudo first order, pseudo second order, Elovich model to experimental data. Also, the adsorption mechanisms determining adsorption equilibrium were investigated by fitting Freundlich, Langmuir and Sips model into the experimental data. The application of AgNPsFe3O4 nanocomposite and MSNPsTPPY for the removal of bacteria DNA demonstrated much enhancement for DNA uptake than the as-synthesized AgNPs and MSNPs materials. The incorporation of magnetite and 4 4hydroxyphenyl 2 2 6 2-terpyridine onto AgNPs and MSNPs significantly enhanced the binding affinity towards the removal the bacteria DNA via strong electrostatic attraction between the active sites on the adsorbent and the negative DNA molecules. Finally, high adsorption capacities were recorded with AgNPsFe3O4 nanocomposite and MSNPsTPPY compared to AgNPs and MSNPs with chaotropic salts. The kinetic adsorption models were mostly best fitted by the pseudo-second order and Elovich models while the adsorption equilibrium was best described by Langmuir and Sips isotherm models. MSNPs with different chaotropic salts, AgNPsFe3O4 nanocomposite and MSNPsTPPY also proved its effectiveness in DNA removal not only in the simulated aqueous solution but in three different real life water samples obtained from Cofimvaba hospital, Ndevana river and Uitenhage WWTPs. High adsorption efficiencies above 90 percent were achieved during the removal of DNA in all the three real water samples. Therefore, application of these adsorbents for the removal of bacteria DNA conveying ARGs may be a promising option that would tackle the consequences of consuming ARGs infected water globally.Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science and Agriculture, 202
In Silico analysis of Spermidine, Spermine and Putrescine interaction with selected heat shock proteins from Plasmodium falciparum 3D7 towards malaria drug development
Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease that affects around half of the world's population. It is one of the most common parasite infections that endangers human life. One of the most serious issues in malaria therapy is the emergence and spread of antimalarial drug-resistant Plasmodium parasites. This is due to the Plasmodium parasite's constant evolution and development of new methods of surviving medication toxicity. Studies of antimalarial drug development have been focused on polyamine biosynthesis by targeting precursors such as ornithine decarboxylase, adenosylmethionine decarboxylase, and spermidine synthase and protein-protein interactions between Plasmodium falciparum chaperones spotting out Hsp90, Hsp70, and Hsp40 as potential targets with little attention being paid to the interaction between polyamines and molecular chaperones. Therefore, this study seeks to identify interactions between polyamines and molecular chaperones present in the malarial parasite Plasmodium falciparum 3D7. The identification of these interactions might lead to the design of effective drugs to treat and eliminate malaria. Using computational analysis, this study aims to find interactions between polyamines and molecular chaperones found in the malarial parasite Plasmodium falciparum 3D7. The sequences of the selected heat proteins retrieved, and the 3D structures predicted and validated. These structures were docked with polyamines retrieved from PubChem and MD simulations on the docked interactions were performed. Docking revealed common amino acid residues with hydrogen bonds and salt bridges between all receptors and ligands, with glutamine and aspartic acid standing out. MD simulations revealed that when HSP20 and HSP40 transport the ligands, they pop up or are released too quickly. However, HSP60, HSP70, and HSP90 provide optimism since the ligands remain attached to the proteins for a specific amount of time. South Africa, despite its relatively small size, is often called “a world in one country”. This phrase arises mainly from the range of oceanographic and climatic features; geological and geomorphological attributes, the diversity of human cultures, languages, races and religions; the mix of developed and developing economies; the wide range in political opinion and parties; the vast array of mineral resources; and finally, what biologists find most interesting of all, the richness of the indigenous flora and fauna. Although southern African aquatic scientists cannot boast an equivalent of the Cape Floral Kingdom, the stretch of coast between northern Namibia and southern Mozambique has a particularly rich marine biota, accounting for almost 15% of all the coastal marine species known world-wide. The richness of the ichthyofauna is due to a number of factors, including the variety of habitats around the subcontinent, ranging from coral reefs, kelp beds, sheltered bays, sandy beaches, exposed rocky shores, coastal lakes to estuaries. In addition, southern Africa is the meeting place of three great oceans and is thus the recipient of species from each of these separate faunas. In comparison to land vertebrates, the world’s fish fauna is by no means well-known, either taxonomically or with regard to the biology of the component species. Apart from the very large number of fish species (estimated to be approximately 40 000), and the difficulties posed by the medium in which they live, there are other reasons for the above state of affairs. An obvious and universal reason is the shortage of funding available for taxonomic, biological and ecological studies, with increasing emphasis being placed on aquaculture, mariculture and fisheries related work. This situation is unlikely to improve and many research institutions around the world are operating on shrinking rather than expanding budgets. The onus of responsibility to disseminate information on the world’s fish faunas therefore rests squarely on the shoulders of those who are fortunate enough to be employed in the fascinating field of ichthyology. This book, which is a major revision and expansion of an earlier monograph (Whitfield 1998), is an attempt to synthesize the available information on fishes associated with southern African estuaries and to highlight the importance of conserving these systems for both fishes and people of the region. Limited reference is made to international estuarine fish research due to space constraints and readers are referred to global ichthyological reviews in this regard. The estuaries of southern Africa (defined as south of 26°S latitude for the purposes of this book) are highly diverse, both in terms of form and functioning. They range from the clear Kosi Estuary entering the coral rich subtropical Indian Ocean waters on the east coast, to the turbid Orange River flowing into the cool upwelled waters of the Atlantic Ocean on the west coast. The estuaries of the subcontinent are fed by catchments with a wide variety of climatic and geological characteristics. For example, the cool-temperate west coast is characterized by good winter rains and relatively dry summers, whereas on the subtropical east coast the opposite rainfall pattern prevails. While most south-western Cape estuaries are fed by rivers with low suspended sediment levels, those of KwaZulu-Natal normally carry high silt loads during the rainy season. Between Mossel Bay and St Francis Bay, rainfall patterns show no distinct seasonal peak and relatively acidic waters with low nutrient levels enter a variety of estuarine types along this section of the coast. The Eastern Cape is a region of transition between the subtropical and warm-temperate biogeographic provinces, and is prone to both droughts and floods occurring during any season of the year. The southern African estuarine environment is an unpredictable and often harsh habitat to occupy, yet each year millions of larval and juvenile fishes enter and thrive in these systems. The fish species that utilize estuaries as nursery areas exhibit great diversity in size, body form, salinity tolerance, diet, habitat preference and breeding behaviour. There is also a complete gradation in terms of the dependence that each species has on the estuarine environment. These and many other issues relating to the biology and ecology of estuary-associated fish species in southern Africa are explored in the chapters to follow.
