    An explorative study into the effect of Information Technology in streamlining the access to development finance, for Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) in South Africa

    This study was concerned with exploring and describing a solution to optimise access to development finance for SMMEs in South Africa. SMMEs and entrepreneurs have long been identified as key drivers of economic development, job creation, and poverty elevation. In response to this and, in an effort to support SMMEs, the South African Government has established a number of development finance institutions with a specific mandate to support SMMEs by providing them with both financial and non-financial support. However, this much-needed support is constrained by several independent factors. The objective of the study was to identify information technologies that are currently available in the financial sector and explore how they can be integrated into development finance institutions (DFIs) and SMMEs to streamline their access to finance. The research started with a structured literature review, followed by a qualitative case study research design, and utilised ten (10) embedded units of analysis. These respondents consisted of industry experts in the field of SMME finance, senior employees within the sampled developmental finance institutions, as well as experts in the financial technology sector. The findings of the study, through the views of the sampled industry experts and relevant literature reviewed, revealed that it can be collectively summarised that there is a need for information technology such as Fintech in the development finance and SMME sector in South Africa. It is evident that a need exists to streamline the current application process to access development finance for SMMEs looking for finance. There is a significant misalignment between the current demand for development finance by SMMEs and the magnitude of finance supplied by DFIs to SMMEs looking for finance.     Characterising termite mound spatial patterns in the Eastern Cape Karoo : applying drone remote sensing,GIS and spatial statistics

    The Eastern Cape Karoo in South Africa has been earmarked for potential Shale Gas development, which has necessitated the understanding of existing ecosystems to be quantiĄed pre-development, in order to have a baseline against which the exploration can be monitored. Termite mounds as baseline mechanisms, are known to be sensitive to ecosystem disturbance and because of their abundance in the exploration zone, have been studied as indicator species. They are both a surface and subsurface phenomena which makes them an ideal baseline monitoring mechanism. Termite mound height, basal circumference and geospatial data was collected against natural and anthropogenic factors: elevation, vegetation, water, soil, geology, human settlements and roads. Mound distributions were observed across four study sites, and seven plots, using a DJI Phantom 4 Pro drone, an aerial and ground survey. Observed mound data on the drone and aerial survey was compared to that of the ground survey. Overall, the drone survey outperformed the aerial survey in recording accurate termite mound data. This was largely attributed to the scale of the study which gave the drone a competitive advantage. It allowed for drone data to be collected at 40 m altitude with an image resolution of 2-6 cm/pixel on each plot. In addition, drone detection accuracy was improved through the ability to generate digital surface models (DSMs) through point clouds and overlaying them with orthomosaics. Considering observed mound spatial point patterns, both the drone and aerial survey were more than 50% percent consistent with the ground survey, although the drone survey detected 28.57% more accurate mound spatial point patterns than the aerial survey.Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, School of Environmental Sciences, 202

    Exploring the Methodologies Used by Construction Project Managers in South Africa

    This study aimed to determine the prevalent project management methodologies (PMMs) are adopted within the South African construction industry. The insight obtained from this study will enhance awareness of the type of methodologies adopted by construction project managers. Moreover, through implementation of these methodologies, control can be enhanced, and the unknown managed. The predominant project management methodology used by construction project managers in South Africa is unknown. A quantitative research approach was used, and an online questionnaire was sent to the South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP). The questionnaire was then administered and sent to the entire population of registered construction project managers (CPMs). The data from 103 respondents were captured onto a database and then statistically analysed to determine the predominant PMMs adopted by CPMs as well as their effect on project success. The study revealed that lean methodology is most widely adopted by CPMs, followed by the critical path method and Waterfall methodology. CPMs strive to reduce waste throughout the building process and organise that materials are only on site when required. Furthermore, a high level of PMM is adopted during the project life cycle phases. As a result, it can favourably impact projects and lead to project success.     Evaluation of the mesozooplankton functional diversity indices in Algoa Bay as proxies to assess the stability of the food chain leading to the African penguin (Spheniscus demersus)

    Current unprecedented environmental changes threaten food web and ecosystem stability, which is particularly concerning in areas with vulnerable species such as the endangered African penguin Spheniscus demersus. In this study I adopted a holistic approach integrating many ecosystem levels to better understand African penguin behavioural ecology and food web stability. I investigated interplay between physico-chemical parameters and zooplankton functional diversity at various temporal and spatial scales in Algoa Bay. The study further investigated the applicability of zooplankton functional diversity (FD) in inferring African penguin food web stability by comparing the FD of zooplankton found in anchovies regurgitated from African penguins and the ones found in the Bay PELTER Stations. Gut contents of anchovies regurgitated from Bird Island and St Croix penguins were also evaluated using Frequency of Occurrence and Dominance methods and compared between colonies. Zooplankton FD in Algoa Bay varied over time but not at spatial scales with chlorophyll-a, Sea Surface Temperature (SST), turbidity and salinity being potential drivers of zooplankton FD. Chlorophyll-a and salinity were positively correlated with FD, meanwhile FD was inversely correlated to turbidity and SST. The study also observed minor differences in the physico-chemical parameters associated with African penguin foraging grounds, though different dietary preferences were found between the anchovies regurgitated from penguins from the two colonies. Anchovies regurgitated by penguins from Bird Island targeted large sized groups such as Decapods, meanwhile anchovies from the St Croix penguin colony targeted small sized Ostracods and Cirripedia. This study therefore, provides insight on the influence of fluctuations in physico-chemical parameters in shaping zooplankton communities in Algoa Bay. The study also emphasises anchovy dietary plasticity, switching from selective feeding to opportunistic feeding in instances of prey shortages which contributes to a stable African penguin food web in the face of climate change.Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, School of Environmental Sciences, 202

    Organophosphate flame retardant’s signatures in the Buffalo River Estuary and their removal using modified cyclodextrins

    The increasing scarcity of fresh and clean water in many places around the world is a major concern. Water is a basic need that must be availed to humans, plants and animals at any given time. It is a requirement that each human on earth should get between 20-50 L of fresh, clean and pure water a day. It is very difficult to keep up with this need due to drastic increase in global pollution by emerging contaminants. The increase is due to human activities, modern way of life, industrialization and improper disposal of materials that contain these OPFRs. Organophosphate flame retardants OPFRs are the organic pollutants considered in this study. OPFRs are semi volatile compounds SVOCs that are used in many industries as flame retardants and additives. They were developed because of environmental and health concerns of previously used brominated and chlorinated flame retardants FRs. They show acute toxicity and exhibit adverse effects such as neurotoxicity, they are also carcinogenic to humans and animals. In recent years, some researchers have started investigating the occurrence and distribution of OPFRs in South African rivers. The aim of this study was to identify signatures of OPFRs in the aquatic environment of Buffalo River Estuary, and soil from a nearby dumpsite: and to develop a method for their removal using modified cyclodextrins. In this study, the concentration of OPFRs were investigated in sediments and soil samples collected from Buffalo River Estuary. This estuary is located close to a major port in East London city in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Collection of samples was done across two seasons i.e. winter and spring. OPFRs in sediment and soil samples in this study were extracted using ultrasonic extraction method. Solid-phase extraction SPE was employed for the cleanup of the extracts, in order to reduce potential matrix interference and also for sample purification. The congeners of interest in this study were Tris 2-Choroethyl phosphate TCEP and Tris 1,3-Dicloro-2-propyl phosphate (TDCP). Samples were air dried immediately on arrival at the laboratory after being stored in an ice chest at 4 ℃ and further processed for further analysis.The concentrations of OPFRs were determined using GC-μECD (gas chromatograph coupled with micro electron capture detector) from soil and sediments in that area and they were found high in winter compared to spring owing to high level of discharge of industrial and domestic waste into the aquatic system and also the nearby dumpsite. The total concentrationof OPFRs Ʃ 2OPFRs for sediments and soil for both seasons was 39935±7619 μg/g and 10376±601 μg/g, respectively. The dominant congener in the Buffalo River Estuary was TCEP. The ecological risk assessment was estimated for the study area, and TCEP moderate risk while TDCP presented low risk. From this study, it could be inferred that the Buffalo River Estuary and the nearby dumpsite in East London are polluted by emerging pollutants i.e. OPFRs. Hence, strict control measures should be put in place to monitor all activities contributing to such magnitude of pollution in the estuary, which is of great economic value to the country. Furthermore in this study, an insoluble and hydrophilic polymer EDTA-Cysteine-β-Cyclodextrin was prepared and synthesized for the remediation of OPFRs in soil and sediments.     Data management and dispensary: missing link contributing to antiretroviral loss to follow-Up in Lejweleputswa District

    Background and aim: The widespread use and access to Anti-Retro Viral Treatment (ART) world-wide has contributed to full preventive and therapeutic benefits. An estimated amount of 68percent of HIV positive people received ART in South Africa (SA) as of 2018. However, reports from TIER.Net and DHIS (District Health Information System), indicate that the retention of patients on ART (specifically first line triple combination therapy Tenofovir Emtricitabine Efavirenz (TEE)) continues to decline. Meanwhile, data on TEE dispensed from the dispensary shows increasing quantities patients across the Free State province on a monthly basis. The aim of this study is to determine factors contributing to the discrepancy between Fixed Dose Combination (FDC) TEE dispensing data and patients on FDC TEE captured on TIER.Net and Health Patient Registration System (HPRS), as a means of improving identification and monitoring of patients that carry the potential risk of being lost to subsequent follow-ups (ART collection / clinical visits). Methods: A retrospective, quantitative, and descriptive record review of 382 medical records of HIV positive patients, along with TIER.Net and Health Patient Registration System (HPRS) reports, was conducted at five primary healthcare (PHC) facilities, each representing the five sub-districts found in Lejweleputswa district using a self-designed data collection tool. Descriptive statistics was used to summarise and present data. Results: Sixty five percent the TEE collected from the dispensary was captured on TIER. Net. It could not be determined on none of the medical records whether or not the administrative clerk captured dispensed TEE on the same date of collection from the dispensary on TIER.Net. Subsequently, the actual date of capturing the TEE dispenses on TIER.Net following collection of the treatment from the dispensary could also not be determined. The overall data on TEE dispensed/collected from the dispensary the same was not the same as the data captured on TIER.Net. Thirty five percent of patients were reported to have collected their ART according to dispensary data than that reported on TIER.Net. Eighty percent of the TEE collected from the dispensary was captured on HPRS. Eighty percent of facilities had an area and computer dedicated for HPRS and TIER.Net but none had a backup computer in cases of theft/breakage. None of the facilities had access to back up connectivity, a manual capturing process in the form of paper-based head count registers was instead utilised as back-up. Conclusion: The following factors were found to contribute to the discrepancy between the TEE dispensing data, TIER.net and HPRS: Poor records keeping, unauthorised dispensing of prescriptions, poor data management, delays and non-capturing of ART medical records and infrastructural and human resource challenges that exist in the data management of the patient medical records. There is a need to address these gaps in order to improve reliability of dispensary data, as well as reports from TIER.Net and HPRS, in order to streamline the identification and monitoring of patients at risk of becoming lost to follow-up.Thesis (MPA) -- Faculty of Health Science

    Dietary preference and perceptions of the health implications: A qualitative study on perspectives from outpatients and health care providers at Nontyatyambo Community Health Centre, Eastern Cape, South Africa

    Introduction and background. Poor dietary choices are resulting in an increase of mortality and morbidity rates globally. Epidemiological studies reveal that diets high in animal-sourced foods (ASF) lead to an increased risk of developing cardio-metabolic diseases (CMD). On the other hand, plant-based foods (PBF) have been shown to reduce this risk. Making well informed dietary choices plays an important role in reducing the burden of these diseases. To this end, this study further explores the role that diet plays in maintaining good health by exploring current dietary preferences, perceptions of the health implications of these dietary choices and perceptions of the benefits of PBFs vs ASFs of people in a local South African context. Methodology. This qualitative study was conducted at Nontyatyambo Community Health Centre, Mdantansane, Buffalo City Metropolitan district in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. A sample of 42 participants was enrolled for the study. A question/interview guide was used to collect data through key-in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. Two audio recorders were used to record the verbal responses of participants. The recorded interviews were transcribed and translated to English. The transcribed data was systematically and thematically analyzed. Results. It was found that all participants in this study were following an omnivorous dietary pattern. A number of participants expressed that they did not like vegetables. In this study, most participants felt that PBFs were healthier than ASFs. Even though they felt PBFs were healthier, none followed exclusively plant-based diet. Conclusion. Transforming dietary patterns to contain more plant-based foods may be a critical factor in reversing harmful effects on public health and the environment. This calls for urgent public health intervention to improve nutritional uptake as a strategy to reduce potential CMD.Thesis (MPA) -- Faculty of Health Sciences, 202

    Electrocatalytic activity of symmetric and asymmetric Co(II) and Mn(III) porphyrins in the presence of graphene quantum dots towards the oxidation of hydrazine

    The influence of metal porphyrins in electro-oxidation of hydrazine is explored. A series of symmetric and asymmetric porphyrins alone and in the presence of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are employed in this work. Tetra 4-aminophenyl porphyrin, manganese tetra 4-aminophenyl porphyrin, manganese tetra 4-aminophenyl porphyrin--GQDs, and manganese tetra 4-aminophenyl porphyrin@GQDs are the symmetric porphyrins. The asymmetric porphyrin and composites are 5, 10, 15-tris(aminophenyl)-20-(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrins, manganese 5, 10, 15-tris(aminophenyl)-20-(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrins, cobalt 5, 10, 15-tris(aminophenyl)-20-(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrins, manganese 5, 10, 15-tris(aminophenyl)-20-(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrins--GQDs, and cobalt 5, 10, 15-tris(aminophenyl)-20-(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrins--GQDs. These complexes were synthesized and characterized accordingly and applied for electrocatalysis. The electrocatalytic experiments were carried out using glassy carbon electrode and the modification was through drop-dry method. The porphyrin and GQDs synthesized were characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy, Mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The modified electrodes were characterized using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical Impedance spectroscopy. The introduction of metal ion in the center of the porphyrin improved electrocatalysis. The presence of push-pull substituents in the porphyrin lowered the oxidation potential and improved the catalysis. The presence of GQDs improved catalysis in both symmetric and asymmetric porphyrin compared to individual components.     Disentangling the role of prokaryotes in regulating export flux via suspended and sinking organic matter in the southern ocean

    The role of phytoplankton in regulating atmospheric carbon dioxide in the marine environment has been the subject of extensive research. We lack, however, comparative insights regarding the functional contributions of bacteria, archaea, fungi, and viruses (the microbiota) to organic matter export especially in understudied polar marine environments such as the Southern Ocean. This knowledge deficit is in part due to the high levels of microbial diversity which obscures efforts to study the relationship between diversity and ecosystem functions including their roles in the sequestration of carbon and nitrogen. Elucidating their precise contributions to organic matter export may be central to potential ecosystems feedbacks to global climate change. We examined several factors which may influence organic matter export to depth including net primary production, phytoplankton biomass, temperature, and prokaryotic functional capacity in the Southern Ocean. A Marine Snow Catcher was used to collect suspended and sinking material 10 metres below mixed layer depth at Southern Ocean Time Series (SOTS) in autumn (March-April) and in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean in winter (July-August) and spring (October-November) 2019. The suspended and sinking material was used to determine the particulate organic carbon and nitrogen concentrations which were then used to calculate fluxes and export ratio ((e-ratio) - particulate organic carbon flux divided by net primary production). Additionally, genomic DNA was extracted from the suspended and sinking material and sequenced to obtain Shotgun metagenomic data which was employed to reconstruct metagenome assembled genome (MAGs) and their functional capacity using bioinformatic tools such as DRAM. Data from the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean, demonstrate that net primary production and temperature were inversely related to the e-ratio which is consistent with previous findings from the northern region of the Southern Ocean. Genomic functional capacity from SOTS suggested that r-strategist (organisms adapted to live in unstable environments) bacteria (e.g., Gammaproteobacteria) were prominent in the suspended pool. By contrast, the sinking particle-pool appeared to be dominated by K- strategists (organisms adapted to stable environment). The opposite was true for the archaea. This finding (i.e., bacteria) differs from a previous study in the northern region of the Southern Ocean, showing that microbes with K-strategists were more abundant in the suspended fraction. K-strategists typically degrade sinking organic matter into suspended organic matter or dissolved organic matter reducing the organic carbon export efficiency. Furthermore, Data from the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean revealed that seasonal temperature changes might dictate the rate of regional prokaryotic degradation across the zones. Resulting in rapid degradation at the northerly warmer regions and slow degradation further south. The data further provide evidence of chemolithoautotrophic mechanisms, with prokaryotes harbouring key pathways, required to transform dissolved inorganic carbon into complex organic forms, including recalcitrant dissolved organic carbon. Collectively, the SOTS and Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean data suggest that shifts in prokaryotic community structure and functional capacity may regulate (either degradation or synthesis of organic matter) carbon export to depth.Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science, Zoology and Entomology, 202

    Cape Fold Ecoregion fish community ecology and responses to stressors

    Freshwater fishes are in global decline and fish as a group are the most imperilled of all vertebrates. Freshwater systems are among the most threatened globally, largely owing to their comparatively high species and habitat diversity while occupying a minute fraction of the Earth’s surface. In South Africa, invasion by non-native fishes has had a devastating effect on freshwater systems across the country. Numerous other stressors and anthropogenic impacts continue to impact these systems, including habitat degradation, water abstraction and global change effects. In general, South African freshwater systems are under-studied and there is a lack of baseline biological and ecological studies on many freshwater fish species. The Cape Fold Ecoregion (CFE) of South Africa is a particularly vulnerable region, with many range-restricted species and highly fragmented native fish ranges following high invasion rates. Within the CFE, the Olifants-Doring River System (ODRS) is of primary concern owing to the high endemism and imperilled status of its freshwater fish species. The Rondegat River in the ODRS is of notable conservation value, as it hosts populations of important endemic CFE species. This river is unique, being the site of the first alien fish eradication programme of its kind in South Africa. Thus the Rondegat River, and in particular its imperilled cyprinid assemblage, is used here as a case study of the responses and community dynamics of recovering freshwater fish species. The members of this cyprinid assemblage are Sedercypris calidus, Pseudobarbus phlegethon and Labeobarbus seeberi. Sedercypris calidus and L. seeberi are listed by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as “Near-Threatened”, while P. phlegethon is listed as “Endangered”. Understanding the dynamics and responses to understudied vulnerable fish communities in the wake of restoration efforts was the overarching goal of this thesis. The first chapter served as a review of current knowledge of the CFE, the Rondegat River, the myriad stressors that have impacted on or are projected to affect this region, and the freshwater fish species on which those stressors act. My first investigations served as an extension of the existing Rondegat River monitoring programme, making use of remote underwater video (RUV) data to assess relative abundance and habitat associations of the focal species (Chapter 2). A relatively limited spatial range of P. phlegethon was established, which was suggested to be a result of relatively highly specialised habitat requirements and sensitivity to disturbance. Sedercypris calidus was confirmed as a relatively more abundant and ubiquitous species across the length of the Rondegat River, sharing much of the lower and middle reaches with L. seeberi. I sought to use experimental trials of functional response, as a proxy for feeding performance, across representative temperatures and relevant prey types, in the spatially overlapping S. calidus and L. seeberi (Chapter 3). Labeobarbus seeberi generally outcompeted S. calidus across temperature treatments and prey types. The ecomorphology and diet of all three species were used to construct trophic profiles, which suggested that there was a high degree of feeding capacity overlap between L. seeberi and S. calidus, while P. phlegethon diverged from the other two species (Chapter 4). Gut content suggested that all three species overlapped broadly in diet. This indicated that the realised trophic niche of these species is similar, despite some morphological specialisation. I then used RUV data to investigate in-situ feeding behaviours, with the aim to disentangle the nuances of community dynamics and mechanisms of coexistence in the cyprinid assemblage (Chapter 5). I found that, despite the higher feeding performance of L. seeberi (Chapter 3) and its overlaps in diet and feeding capacity with S. calidus (Chapter 4), S. calidus is able to mitigate competitive pressures through foraging mode switching and exploitation of allochthonous food inputs. Evidence for further habitat and prey selectivity in Pseudobarbus phlegethon was gathered based on dependence on complex habitats and pool refugia for the majority of its feeding, supporting this species as a headwater specialist; alongside signals of its spatial and habitat use patterns (Chapter 2). While S. calidus and L. seeberi were found to be less habitat-specific than P. phlegethon, caution was noted in the potential for ongoing stressors, such as habitat destruction, loss of river connectivity and global change effects, to impact on the reproductive success of these two species. Stressors affecting the habitats and sensitive invertebrate taxa upon which all three species depend continue to threaten the Rondegat system, highlighting the need to maintain ecosystem integrity through conservation interventions. There remains significant scope to maintain restoration efforts in the Rondegat River and other river systems of the CFE, through direct conservation actions, enhanced community awareness, indigenous riparian vegetation restoration and involvement of local stakeholders in various conservation-centred activities.Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science, Ichthyology and Fisheries Science, 202
