    An ethnomedical study of the role and impact of cannabidiol (CBD) treatment of women living with endometriosis and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

    Over the last few years, there has been a notable increase in popularity in the use of cannabidiol (CBD) as a form of alternative medicinal treatment for various illnesses. CBD, a by-product of the cannabis plant, is an isolate and does not contain the psychoactive agent, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Endometriosis and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) are chronic reproductive health sicknesses that are increasingly experienced by women. In the absence of cures, biomedical treatment for these diseases aim to manage symptoms, for example; heavy bleeding, heightened levels of pain, and insomnia. CBD offers an alternative to women who feel that biomedical interventions are no longer able to maintain their health and well-being. CBD positions itself as a natural remedy claiming to be safe and effective. This research study, mainly through qualitative data collection, focused on experiences of Zimbabwean and South African women living with endometriosis and/ or PCOS, who have turned to CBD to manage their symptoms. The importance of this study was to position itself within patients’ lived experiences. The research study found that CBD indeed has numerous benefits, including pain management, alleviating stress, and anxiety. Through the emergent themes from the data, it became clear that women are marginalised and treated unequally in the biomedical healthcare sphere.     Potential running related injury contributors in South African long-distance runners

    Running related injuries (RRIs) are a common problem among long-distance runners, with injury rates ranging from 19.4% to 79.3%. Many studies have been done, investigating possible contributors to RRIs however, very few studies have investigated RRIs in South African long-distance runners, a population which may differ from previously studied populations. The current study aimed to build a descriptive profile of South African long-distance runners, as well as to determine associated factors that may contribute to RRIs. In order to do this, a cross-sectional, retrospective study design was employed using a questionnaire which was mostly electronically distributed. The sample consisted of 378 long-distance runners from each province in South Africa (SA). Using the Chi-square analysis and Fisher exact tests, significant associations were established (p<0.05). The current study found that certain RRI variables were associated with specific aspects of the participants’ personal characteristics and demographics, training characteristics, running experience, footwear, and cross training activities. Footwear and training characteristics produced the largest number of significant RRI associations. The findings of the current study could assist future research on RRIs in South African long-distance runners, by informing researchers of potential areas where more in-depth research is needed.     Mediating transition to household electricity conservation through co-designing in Makhanda, South Africa

    Households consume up to 20% of total global electricity consumption, hence they are important role players in efforts for promoting sustainable consumption. Research on electricity-use behaviour and effectiveness of interventions is important for informing intervention strategies. However, relative to developed countries, research on this subject is lacking in developing countries, where electricity access is limited, and a substantial proportion of households are energy poor. The main goal of this study was to examine reported electricity-use behaviour and the effects of co-designed interventions on household electricity consumption in low-income households in Makhanda, South Africa, using a field-based experiment. Findings from self-reported electricity-use practices showed mixed results, with households reporting both good electricity-use behaviour (e.g., cooling down hot food before refrigeration) and wasteful actions (e.g., leaving appliances on standby). Results showed that electricity-use behaviour was influenced by socio-psychological values including universalism, benevolence, hedonism, and power. Over the intervention period, households exposed to co-designed electricity-saving interventions showed mean electricity savings of about 5.5%, while households in the Partial Treatment and Control group showed increased electricity consumption. Socio-demographic factors such as age and psychological factors (involvement and perceived behavioural control) were very important determinants of household consumption.     Protecting the right to identity against catfishing

    Catfishing is a form of impersonation occurring on social media that interferes with a person’s right to identity. It involves creating a fake profile online using another person’s images. The facets of the right to identity are image, name, and likeness, among others. Catfishing affects a person’s right to identity and human dignity. Hence, the thesis aims to determine whether the right to identity adequately protects individuals against catfishing. This thesis is a desktop analysis considering the South African legal framework related to the right to identity, including the common law, the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, and legislation. The thesis is also a comparative analysis assessing the adequacy of addressing catfishing through the right to identity. The study evaluates the right to identity’s adequacy by juxtaposing the South African legal framework with California and Oklahoma’s common law and statutory interventions. The study reveals that the right to identity protects South African social networking website users against catfishing. Like the common law right of privacy in California and Oklahoma, a person infringes the right to identity when they use another person’s identity facets to portray them in a false light, and like the statutory right of publicity in California and Oklahoma, a person infringes identity when they appropriate facets of another person’s identity for commercial gain. The infringement of the right to identity entitles a person to legal remedies, including a claim for damages, among other things. The thesis also considers principles of conflict of laws to determine the operative law in an instance where a victim resides in South Africa and the perpetrator resides in the US, or vice versa. The study recommends that developing the common law to recognise that identity can be infringed by mere appropriation not linked to a commercial purpose would be beneficial for addressing catfishing adequately in South Africa.     Talk in online video games: study of how the use of jargon, social interaction, and representation in Overwatch affects the ability of women to immerse themselves in these spaces

    This thesis investigates the impact on women of aggressive, demeaning and blaming talk in the online video game* space. The objective is to understand how players talk to each other and how this kind of talk presents issues for women trying to enter the online gaming sphere and become recognised as players. The main method was participatory observation and interviews with women who have experienced such talk. Key results which came from this research is that the process of keeping specific people out of communities through different means of talk - gatekeeping, women being viewed as objects of sexual gratification for men through bad representation in video games and media and using women as scapegoats for frustration and blame in the competitive online video game space, are the main issues which arise from the way players communicate with each other. In conclusion, the research presented that there needs to be an effective system of unlearning and relearning these behaviours in communities and a change in the way women are represented and seen in media is necessary in order to change the behavioural patterns which exist in gaming culture.Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, Journalism and Media Studies, 202

    Phytochemical investigation and antidiabetic activity of cissampelos capensis and strychnos henningsii the Eastern Cape medicinal plants

    Diabetes mellitus is recorded as a significant health crisis in South Africa and various medicinal plants are used for the management of diabetes. However, the chemistry and bioactivity associated with these plants' antidiabetic activity are still lacking. Cissampelos capensis L.f. and Strychnos henningsii Gilg are among the plants utilised to manage diabetes in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. C. capensis and S. henningsii are known for their isoquinoline – and indole alkaloids, respectively. Other phytochemical groups associated with antidiabetic activity are the phenols, flavonoids, and terpenes. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate in-depth the phytochemical profiling, alkaloidal identification, and structural characterisation of phytochemicals isolated from these plants. Also, subsequent in vitro antidiabetic screening of the crude extracts and isolated compounds from both plants was done. The phytochemical profiling was performed by employing a qualitative and quantitative approach through high-performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) and UV-spectrometry. Further analysis for the identification of alkaloids was done by using LCMS. Fractionation and purification of crude extracts were achieved through crystallisation and various chromatographic techniques. NMR, HRMS, UV/Vis, FTIR, and XRD spectroscopic techniques were used to characterise isolated compounds. In vitro antidiabetic activity screening involved the investigation of cytotoxicity, antioxidant activity, alpha-amylase – and/or alpha-glucosidase inhibition (particular to type II diabetes). C. capensis and S. henningsii extracts tested positive for alkaloids, phenolics, flavonoids, and terpenes through HPTLC screening. Quantitative estimation by UV spectrometry of these phytochemical groups detected the highest concentration of alkaloids, followed by flavonoids, phenolics, and terpenes content. The in vitro antidiabetic biological screening of the various crude extracts suggested that the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolics, and terpenes fostered favourable biological activity. The LCMS of the known alkaloidal constituents from C. capensis detected the presence of ten alkaloids, including glaziovine, lauroscholtzine, pronuciferine and vi salutardine. Seven known alkaloids and one triterpene were detected from S. henningsii, including holtsiine, 23-hdroxyspermostrychnine, henningsiine, and the triterpene, friedelin. These findings suggest that C. capensis and S. henningsii have similar phytochemical constituents compared to the species reported in literature.     Ethnobotany and conservation biology of Warburgia salutaris (G.Bertol.) Chiov., a threatened medicinal plant in southern Mozambique

    Warburgia salutaris, locally known as “chibaha” (Ronga, Tsonga), “isiBhaha” (Zulu) and “siBhaha” (Siswati), is one of the most highly-valued medicinal plant species in southern Africa. Its bark has long been employed to treat bacterial and fungal infections, and it is often a front line herbal treatment for malaria. The species is popular in rural and urban areas due to its lower price compared to commercial pharmaceuticals and because of its long-standing spiritual and symbolic significance. Consequently, W. salutaris is threatened in Malawi, South Africa and Swaziland and is believed to be extincted in the wild in Zimbabwe. In Mozambique, where the tree is confined to the southern part of the country, it is considered vulnerable due to high local demand and cross-border export. Although there is limited research, further work is urgently needed to provide the basis for options and strategies to achieve desired outcomes. This study aimed to explore different approaches for the conservation of W. salutaris in the Lebombo Mountains (LM), the Tembe River (TR) and the Futi Corridor (FC) areas, in southern Mozambique. For this, potential distribution, socio cultural factors that influenced sustainable management of the species, demography, harvest impact, genetic diversity and population differentiation were considered. The kuenm package in R, 2 846 occurrence and 11 environmental data were used to model the potential current and future distribution in 2050 and 2070 using four general circulation models (CESM1(BGC), ACCESS1.3, FIO-ESM and IPSL-CM5A-MR) under representative concentration pathways (RCPs) 4.5 and 8.5. The extent of occurrence (EOO) and habitat suitability (HS) were also determined. Stratified random semi-structured interviews with 182 heads of households were carried out to explore cultural and socio incentives of use, compared knowledge distribution, determine local management practices and explore local ecological knowledge related to the species in the three study areas. In addition, 17 focus group discussion were conducted to clarify issues raised during household interviews. One hundred and twenty four quadrants were used to determine the abundance and population structure. The Simpson index of dominance, permutation index and quotient between consecutive classes were used to assess population stability, and an eight point scale was used to evaluate the extent of bark damages. Genomic deoxyribonucleic acid (gDNA) (n=48) was used to assessed genetic diversity and population structure through the newly developed single sequence repeats (SSR) molecular markers. Model selected was statistical significant for prediction of potential distribution of W. salutaris in southern Mozambique (partial ROC =0.00, omission rate = 0.04 and delta AICc = 0.00). The current environmental conditions mostly explained by climatic predictor, indicated in general, the potential distribution on areas of occurrence observed during the field work in southern Mozambique. Future project suggested an increase of climatic suitable areas in all the general circulation models in both conservative and pessimistic climatic scenarios (RCPs 4.5 and 8.5, respectively) in 2050 and 2070, and consequently the increase of HS and the EOO. Results of this work suggests W. salutaris would not extinct at least in the coming 50 years due to climate change but other threats such as overexploitation of the species need to be addressed. With increase of climatic suitable areas, conservation and management of this species could focus on reintroduction and cultivation for recovery of the species, with the help of time. W. salutaris was used for medicinal purposes to treat 12 health problems, with the bark being the most commonly used part (92% of informants). Knowledge of the species uses differed significantly between the three study areas but not with respondent gender or age. Informants also mentioned a considerable number of alternative species of W. salutaris (37 species in LM, 33 species in TR and 17 species in FC). Local ecological knowledge on the ecological niche of the species also varied substantial in the three areas with both types of knowledge generally higher in the Tembe River area. Local management practises were revealed mostly on harvesting through vertical bark stripping cited by 100% of informants in TR, 61.6% FC and 51.7 LM (71% of all informants). Yet most (64.3% of all informants, corresponding to 98.4% in TR, 51.7% in Fc and 41.7% LM) used non-traditional harvesting tools (machete) bark removal. For sustainable use of the species, consideration should be given to combined conservation strategies such as the use of alternative species with the same application, substitution of bark by leaves, and increases in alternative sources of plant material through cultivation. The densities of alive stems were not statistically different in the three areas but was higher in LM (mean of 4500.3±9209.8 stems/ha). Equally the mean densities of recruits (diameter ≤2 cm) were not considerable different but was higher in the FC (3296.8±9116.7 stems/ha). The regression analyses for the three study area revealed negative slopes, indicating more recruits and fewer individuals in larger classes. The Simpson indexes of dominance, permutation indexes and quotients between the consecutive size classes suggested some levels of population instability in the three areas. Harvesting took place in the eight point scale, all size classes were harvested but preference was higher on intermediate (15.1-20 cm) or larger (>20 cm) size classes in all the study areas but gatherers avoided harvesting bark from recruits. Although the mean densities of harvested stem was not significant this work indicated higher levels of stem destruction in FC. Harvested dead stems ware significant in the three areas and FC had the higher of (39.5±85.9 stems/ha) compared to 7.6±19.1 and 2.1±4.3 in TR and LM, respectively. Equally, the density of physiologically stressed stems differed substantially in the three areas with higher in FC 20.5± 75.5 stems/ha compared to 18.7±82.9 stems/ha in TR and 3.8±11.8 stems/ha in LM. This results suggests implementation of protection measures such as the inclusion of the species in the national CITES list to regulated cross-border trade and strengthening of the law enforcement. Genetic diversity, structure and gene flow in the exiting populations of southern Mozambique revealed that despite fragmentation and overexploitation, this species maintains a relatively high level of genetic diversity supporting the existence of random mating. Two genetic groups were found corresponding to the northern (LM and TR) and southern (FC) areas. The study suggests that, if local extinctions occurred in Mozambique, the pepper-bark tree persisted in sufficient numbers to retain a large proportion of genetic diversity. Management plans should concentrate on maintaining this high level of genetic variability through both in and ex-situ conservation actions.Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science, Environmental Science, 202
