The integration of sustainable development goals into business strategies: evidence from the Johannesburg stock exchange top 100
The main of objective of this study was to identify factors influencing the integration of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into core business strategies and activities of the top 100 companies listed on the JSE for the period of 2018 to 2019. The study used one dependent variable (SDG integration) and five independent variables (company size, profitability, financial leverage, board size and mission/vision). To measure SDG integration, a dichotomous scale ranging from 0 and 1 was applied. A scale of 1 was allocated if SDGs are integrated into company strategies and business activities and 0 if there is no integration mentioned. The influence of company size, profitability, financial leverage, board size and mission statements on the integration of SDGs into strategies was investigated using random effect regression model. The findings showed that company size, board size and mentioning of sustainability in mission statements has a positive influence of SDG integration. Financial leverage and profitability were found not to have any significant influence on SDG reporting. The results of this study provided several important implications. Regulators, policy makers and sustainability advocates may gain further understanding into some of the factors that motivate firms to integrate SDGs into strategies. For various stakeholders, the findings suggested that stakeholders should seek ways to exert greater pressure on firms to not only disclose SDGs, but to integrate them in business strategies The study had some limitations, as it relied on a limited sample of only the top 100 firms listed on the JSE. The study period was only limited to 2018 and 2019 financial years. Due to these limitations, the researchers cannot claim that the results of the study are generalisable to all contexts. The study suggested future research to further explore how the board characteristics such as age, gender, education, and nationality influence the level of SDG integration. Furthermore, qualitative research was suggested to investigate the reasons that companies give for integrating SDGs into strategies, and the obstacles they face which could result in non-integration.Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Business and Economic science, 202
Is education blithely producing unemployed graduates?: A reflection based on a review of environmental skills initiatives 2016-2021
A statement from the president of the Black Business Council (BBC) that "our education system continues to produce the unemployed graduates" (NewZRoomAfrika, 2021) because "the courses they are doing are not required by industry" reflects the perennial perception that South Africa's education system is a cause of unemployment. In this paper, I explore aspects of this perception through a meta-review of environmental skills-related studies conducted over the past five years. Data used in these studies include graduation trends based on higher education, employer surveys, analyses of skills needs in the workplace compared to courses offered, and case examples of internships and teacher development. Using an ecological-systems model, I relate the findings, in a layered critical realist analysis, to the socio-cultural milieu in South Africa. I challenge the conception of relevant graduate education evident in the BBC's statement
Understanding resource partitioning in three species of Gobiidae living in the warm-temperate Sundays Estuary
Estuaries represent a transition zone where saline water combines with freshwater, and this results in temporal and spatial variability in both biotic and abiotic parameters. Because the environmental gradient changes so rapidly in areas and the estuarine environment is harsh, fish need to either be able to specialise to one particular suite of abiotic contexts or have the physiological mechanisms to allow them to move throughout the gradient of the estuary. Apart from this, other factors such as climate change, habitat degradation, over exploitation of resources and the introduction of alien species also negatively influence fish species living in estuaries. These anthropogenic stressors can cause species exclusion in areas which were previously suitable for species with particular suites of traits. Measuring resource partitioning within functional groups not only helps in determining the functional structure of communities but also explains how organisms use resources in a community. Resource partitioning studies provide a useful conceptual framework to understand species interactions in a community and identify major resource dimensions along which species segregate. This study aimed to describe resource partitioning among the Gobiidae species, as the family is well represented in South African estuaries (24 species), is highly abundant and has several species which co-exist in individual estuaries. To accomplish this, different forms of resource partitioning that promote the coexistence of the three most abundant species found in warm-temperate South African estuaries; the Knysna sand goby Psammogobius knysnaensis (Smith, 1935), Prison goby Caffrogobius gilchristi (Boulenger, 1898) and River goby Glossogobius callidus (Smith, 1937) were investigated in the Sundays Estuary. This was accomplished by determining the reproductive biology, interspecific differences in feeding morphology, feeding ecology and habitat partitioning among the three species. The distribution and abundance of potential prey in the estuary (mesozooplankton and macrozoobenthic communities) were investigated, with both mesozooplankton and macrozoobenthic communities grouping into three distinct communities along the environmental gradient. Feeding morphological traits responsible for prey location, chasing, capture, mastication, ingestion and digestion were investigated. Little morphological overlap was observed between P. knysnaensis and C. gilchristi, indicating little dietary overlap between these two species. In contrast, the feeding morphology of Glossogobius callidus overlapped with both P. knysnaensis and C. gilchristi, indicating the potential to compete with both species for food. The trophic ecology of the three species was investigated using stomach content analysis, whereby prey abundance, frequency of occurrence and percentage of volume were determined. For P. knysnaensis, the incorporation of cyclopoids and ostracods decreased with fish size and that of bivalves and amphipods increased. Caffrogobius gilchristi was found to be a specialist feeder on cyclopoids but as the species increased in size the incorporation of amphipods, mysids, brachyurans and gastropods increased. Glossogobius callidus was found to be a generalist feeder, feeding on cyclopoids, amphipods and chironomids. The incorporation of cyclopoids decreased with fish size and the consumption of large sized amphipods and chironomids increased with fish size. To assess their reproductive biology, gonadosomatic index (GSI) was used to study the breeding season. In all three species, reproduction peaked in spring and summer, and this is associated with peak phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass in estuaries. Length at 50% maturity and fecundity were also determined. The three species predominated in different locations in the estuary, which explains why they were able to use similar resources and reproduce at the same time. Psammogobius knysnaensis was abundant in the sandy mouth region, with sediment type and prey (bivalves and mysids) availability affecting its distribution. Caffrogobius gilchristi was abundant in the muddy lower reaches of the estuary, with its distribution influenced by sediment composition and temperature. Glossogobius callidus was abundant in the turbid upper reaches, with its distribution influenced by prey (amphipods) availability and turbidity. Different habitat preferences and diet among the specific size ranges enabled coexistence among the species. Indifference and Epistemic Injustice: Phenomenological Reflections
The proposed research seeks to address salient questions concerning the relation of indifference and epistemic injustice. This involves questions dealing with the necessary and sufficient conditions for indifference; how it arises through our conditions of lived experience and how it extends to the production, maintenance and engagement with knowledge. In short, to what extent does indifference play a role in epistemic injustice? Conversely, to what extent does epistemic injustice relate to indifference? The proposed research will explore major concepts of the relation between indifference and epistemic injustice. The research will settle on a phenomenological approach. Its claim is that major contemporary concepts of indifference and injustice can be critically informed by a phenomenological analysis of these concepts. Thus, it will attempt to analyse the relation of indifference and injustice from within the context of our lived conditions of experience. Assessment of cytotoxic artemisinin and its derivatives as DNA damaging inducing agents in triple-negative breast cancer cells
In developing countries, including South Africa, breast cancer is the primary cause of cancer-related deaths among women. TNBC (triple-negative breast cancer) is an aggressive breast cancer subtype that is more prevalent in women of African descent. This subtype lacks the key receptors, namely the estrogen receptor (ER-), progesterone receptor (PR-), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2-) that are the basis of successful targeted therapies for other subtypes of the disease. To date, there are no effective, standardized targeted therapies for TNBC. Artemisinin is an anti-malarial drug and numerous derivatives of the compound have been developed to improve the potency and solubility of the parent compound. Artemisinin and its derivatives have gained attention as potential anti-cancer agents; however, such studies have not yet progressed to clinical trials and the precise mechanism of action of these compounds is yet to be fully explained. In this study, artemisinin, and its known derivative artesunate, as well as a novel derivative, WHN11, were investigated as DNA damage-inducing agents in TNBC. WHN11 was found to be the most potent of the three compounds, displaying an IC50 of 3.20 μM against HCC70 cells, artemisinin displayed an IC50 of 214.70 μM and artesunate displayed an IC50 of 25.48 μM. The compounds were less toxic to the MCF12A non-cancerous cells, with IC50 values 298.30, 87.53, and 8.35 μM for artemisinin, artesunate, and WHN11, respectively, and displayed selectivity indices of 1.39, 3.44 and 2.61 μM for artemisinin, artesunate, and WHN11, respectively. In silico and in vitro studies revealed that the artemisinin compounds bind to DNA through the minor groove. While all three compounds were able to bind to DNA, a comet assay revealed that only artemisinin and artesunate, and not WHN11, were able to cause DNA damage compared to the vehicle control, DMSO. Finally, a topoisomerase I (TOPO I) enzyme assay demonstrated that while the compounds appeared to display a degree of inhibition of TOPO I, as evidenced by a downward shift in the plasmid band on the agarose gel, they were not able to fully inhibit the enzyme to return the plasmid to the supercoiled conformation. In addition, combination studies revealed that artemisinin, artesunate, and WHN11 acted synergistically in combination with camptothecin, but displayed either an additive (artemisinin) or antagonistic (artesunate and WHN11) relationship when used in combination with etoposide. In conclusion, artemisinin, its known derivative artesunate, and novel and highly toxic derivative WHN11, all bind to DNA via the minor groove, however only artemisinin and artesunate, and not WHN11, cause DNA damage, indicating a potentially different mechanism of action of the three artemisinins. All three compounds act synergistically with camptothecin, which suggests interference with topoisomerase activity, partially supported by slight inhibition of TOPO I activity, and could indicate either direct inhibition of the enzyme or interference with enzyme function by competitive binding to the DNA. Further studies could help explore alternate DNA damage assays, to validate these findings, and the effect of the compounds on TOPO II activity could also be assessed.Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Biochemistry and Microbiology, 202
Organisational justice as a moderator in the relationship between turnover intention and organisational citizenship behaviour among nurses in Eastern Cape Province
Orientation: Out of 121 professional nurses who worked in the public sector between 2002 and 2005, 104 of them left to work for private facilities in South Africa. In an era distinguished by turbulent changes in business industry due to factors such as globalisation, organisations are trying by all means to achieve competitive advantage. Many researchers have pointed organisational justice as a survival aspect for several companies. Nevertheless, internal organisational feature like organisational citizenship behaviour and turnover intention need a carefully consideration as they influence the degree of organisational justice within the organisation. Research purpose: The objective of this study was to empirically investigate the inter-relationship between turnover intention and the organisational citizenship behaviour of nurses in selected hospitals within the Chris Hani District, using organisational justice as the moderator. Motivation for the study: Most organisations struggle to retain workers, increase job satisfaction, commitment of employees, and obtain a competitive advantage in the marketplace. Poor working conditions such as poor leadership and governance, increased workload, lack of promotion, inadequate resources and limited opportunities for career development have negatively affected employee retention and increased turnover intention in the public healthcare sector. Research design, approach, and method: A questionnaire was used as a method for data collection, and it was administered to a sample of 298 respondents at selected hospitals in Chris Hani District. Random sampling was used to select respondents. Main findings: Multiple linear regression analysis was applied in testing the statistical significance of the relationship among variables of the study. The findings showed a significant moderating impact of organisational justice on the correlation between turnover intention and organisational citizenship behaviour. Practical implication: The findings demonstrated that managers need to design HR strategies to enhance and warrant employee perception of organisational justice and fairness to elevate the level of organisational citizenship behaviour and decrease turnover intention in the organisation and leading to higher productivity. A Critical Assessment of the Legal and Policy Frameworks for Combating Child Trafficking in the Southern African Development Community
Child trafficking is a longstanding problem which affects victims and communities in various ways and therefore requires stern action both at the global and regional level. In the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, the crime is closely connected to the existing socio-economic challenges such as poverty; underdevelopment; lack of equal economic opportunities; HIV/AIDS; and human rights violations. As a result, SADC States are fertile sources, transit zones and destinations for child trafficking. It is internationally recognised that it is States such as those in the SADC region that require a comprehensive approach to prevent and prosecute the crime while simultaneously ensuring victim protection. To this effect, the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons Especially Women and Children is the primary instrument that seeks to provide such a comprehensive approach to child trafficking. Therefore, the current regional and national responses to child trafficking in most SADC States, are influenced by this Protocol. Despite these legislative and policy efforts to combat the crime, statistics show that in recent years child trafficking has been rapidly increasing in SADC. Thus, this research seeks to investigate why child trafficking remains prevalent in the region despite a plethora of measures against the crime. The research, therefore, assesses the effectiveness of the legal and policy measures taken by the SADC States to combat child trafficking using a qualitative approach involving analysis and interpretation of relevant legislation and policies. The primary focus is on the Trafficking Protocol as the main child trafficking instrument at the international level. The role of non-child trafficking instruments in the absence of a community instrument against the crime in SADC is also analysed. This research observes that the increasing child trafficking problem in the region is not mainly because of a lack of adequate legislation or policies but the lack of effective implementation of measures. Without a regional comprehensive and coordinated implementation approach, these measures remain weak and inadequate to fully combat child trafficking in the region. A stakeholder framework for sustainable Supply chain management in the Zimbabwean food industry
The food supply chain plays an important role in the Zimbabwean food industry. More so sustainable food supply chain management (SFSCM) is a subject that has not received much attention, and yet it is so pertinent in determining food security in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe has faced episodes of inadequate grain/cereal food reserves, hence the urgent need to develop a stakeholder framework for sustainable food supply chain management. The main objective of the study was to develop a stakeholder framework for SFSCM in the food industry. To accomplish the main objective, the research intended to achieve the following sub-objectives, namely to: establish the drivers for SFSCM; identify SFSCM practices within the food industry; identify the key stakeholders’ dynamic capabilities (SDCs) in the food industry and identify challenges faced by stakeholders in implementing SFSCM. The study also sought to establish the influence of: SFSCM drivers on implementing SFSCM practices; SFSCM drivers on SDCs; SFSCM practices on SDCs; SFSCM practices on SFSCM performance; SFSCM drivers on SFSCM performance; and SDCs on SFSCM performance. This study further sought to assess the mediation effect of: SFSCM drivers on the relationship between SFSCM practices and SDCs; SDCs on the relationship between SFSCM practices and SFSCM performance; SFSCM drivers on the relationship between SDCs and SFSCM performance and finally to assess the mediation effect of SDCs on the relationship between SFSCM drivers and SFSCM performance. This study employed a pragmatic philosophy that allowed for the collection of primary data using a fixed concurrent mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative) approach. The data analysis for this research included qualitative data from 22 participants and quantitative data from 292 respondents, all of whom were recruited through nine gatekeepers (Grain Marketing Board, Consumer Council of Zimbabwe, Food and Nutrition Association of Zimbabwe, Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe, Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Water and Rural Resettlement, Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply, Food and Agriculture Organization in Zimbabwe, Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers and Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce). A thematic analysis was used to analyse qualitative data. For the quantitative data, the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 27 package was used to perform descriptive analysis, and principal component analysis for factor reduction and dimensional groups. Analysis of a Moment Structures (AMOS 26) program was used viii to perform structural equation modelling (SEM) for model fit evaluations and hypothesis tests. The mixed methods approach (both qualitative and quantitative) results identified regulatory pressure, market pressure, societal pressure, availability of resources, organisational culture and corporate objectives as some of the key SFSCM drivers. Additionally, the results identified the following as the key SFSCM practices: waste management, carbon emission reduction, logistics optimisation, water conservation, energy conservation, cost reduction and price efficiency, employment of competent people, cultivation of profitable grain crops, corporate social responsibility, fair distribution of food, human development on nutritious food consumption, food donations and continuously conducting consumer tastes surveys. Further, the mixed methods approach results cited the following key SDCs: sensing, seizing, reconfiguration, reflexive control, partner development, co-evolving and supply chain integration capabilities. Major challenges faced by stakeholders when implementing SFSCM were also identified and these involved lack of resources, lack of top management commitment, poor information sharing, lack of mutual trust amongst stakeholders, unmotivated employees, lack of government support, ever-changing food regulations, poor customer demand for sustainable and healthy foods, corruption and economic hardship challenges. The study also sought to establish relationships amongst variables. The mixed methods approach results revealed that SFSCM drivers have a positive influence on SFSCM practices, SDCs and SFSCM performance. The results also report a positive and significant influence of SFSCM practices on SDCs. The results further indicate that SDCs have a positive and significant influence on SFSCM performance. Although the qualitative findings reported a positive influence of SFSCM practices on SFSCM performance, the quantitative results from the SEM path analysis reported a very weak positive and insignificant influence of SFSCM practices on SFSCM performance. Mediation analysis was also performed using the quantitative data analysis only, and the results revealed that SFSCM drivers have significant partial mediation effect on the relationship between SFSCM practices and SDCs. The results also report that SDCs have a significant full mediation effect on the relationship between SFSCM practices and SFSCM performance. SFSCM drivers were found to have a significant ix partial mediation influence on the relationship between SDCs and SFSCM performance. Lastly, SDCs have a significant partial mediation effect on the relationship between SFSCM drivers and SFSCM performance. Based on the empirical results, conclusions were drawn, and recommendations were made. The research proposes a new stakeholder framework for SFSCM in the food industry. The study recommends that stakeholders consider providing training and education to all employees about the critical role of SFSCM in ensuring Zimbabwe's food security. Additionally, policymakers are urged to implement supply chain anticorruption and fair-trading policies in order to boost SFSCM performance. Stakeholder institutions are also urged to reward internal stakeholders who perform exceptionally well in terms of SFSCM in order to positively motivate all staff, and ultimately improve SFSCM.Thesis (PHD) -- Faculty of Business and Economic Sciences, Business School, 202
A systematic methodology to evaluating optimised machine learning based network intrusion detection systems
A network intrusion detection system (NIDS) is essential for mitigating computer network attacks in various scenarios. However, the increasing complexity of computer networks and attacks makes classifying unseen or novel network traffic challenging. Supervised machine learning techniques (ML) used in a NIDS can be affected by different scenarios. Thus, dataset recency, size, and applicability are essential factors when selecting and tuning a machine learning classifier. This thesis explores developing and optimising several supervised ML algorithms with relatively new datasets constructed to depict real-world scenarios. The methodology includes empirical analyses of systematic ML-based NIDS for a near real-world network system to improve intrusion detection. The thesis is experimental heavy for model assessment. Data preparation methods are explored, followed by feature engineering techniques. The model evaluation process involves three experiments testing against a validation, un-trained, and retrained set. They compare several traditional machine learning and deep learning classifiers to identify the best NIDS model. Results show that the focus on feature scaling, feature selection methods and ML algo- rithm hyper-parameter tuning per model is an essential optimisation component. Distance based ML algorithm performed much better with quantile transformation whilst the tree based algorithms performed better without scaling. Permutation importance performs as a feature selection method compared to feature extraction using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) when applied against all ML algorithms explored. Random forests, Sup- port Vector Machines and recurrent neural networks consistently achieved the best results with high macro f1-score results of 90% 81% and 73% for the CICIDS 2017 dataset; and 72% 68% and 73% against the CICIDS 2018 dataset.Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Computer Science, 202
