The geology, mineralogy, structure and economic aspects of the pegmatite-hosted Swanson Tantalum Deposit, Tantalite Valley area, southern Namibia
This study presents the geology, mineralogy, structure, and economic aspects of the recently explored Swanson Tantalum Deposit occurring within the Namaqua Sector of the Namaqua Natal Metamorphic Province, Tantalite Valley area, southern Namibia. It is an LCT-type pegmatite hosted (microlitetantalite- tapiolite ± spodumene – lepidolite - zinnwaldite) tantalum deposit forming part of a highly localised sill-and-dyke swarm comprised of 15 shallow dipping and significantly mineralised pegmatites. This deposit forms part of the western portions of the regionally developed∼ 1040 – 950 Ma Orange River Pegmatite Belt (ORPB) which was locally emplaced syn-tectonically into competent host rocks in the core zone of the late-stage crustal scale transcurrent dextral, ductile to brittle-ductile D4 Marshall Rocks – Pofadder Shear Zone (MRPSZ), where it crosscuts the rocks of the D2 Lower Fish River - Onseepkans Thrust Zone (LFROTZ). A JORC Maiden Mineral Resource of 1.2 Mt @ 412 ppm Ta2O5 + 76 ppm Nb2O5 + 0.29 wt. % Li2O (with an applied cut-off grade of 236 ppm Ta2O5 and a minimum thickness of 1 m) has recently been estimated for the deposit. The deposit is currently being advanced to feasibility stage with the aim of outlining economic Mineral Reserves. It currently hosts a globally significant and market-relevant “high grade – low tonnage” tantalum Mineral Resource. Recent litho-structural mapping of this deposit has shown that its structural setting encompasses a locally developed lower strain extensional quadrant associated with the mega-scale shear zone bound competent mantle porphyroclast: the mafic-ultramafic Tantalite Valley Complex (TVC), or TVC megaclast. A succession of syn-D4 MRPSZ-hosted granitic melts comprising earlier leucogranite intrusions and later mineralised pegmatites of the Swanson Tantalum Deposit have variably utilised this extensional structure. The earlier leucogranites have clearly exploited mylonitic foliations associated with the development of core zone of the MRPSZ, while the mineralised pegmatites have utilised later-stage shallow-dipping Riedel fractures developed within more competent host rock. The tantalum tenor of pegmatites comprising the Swanson Tantalum Deposit is clearly structurally controlled, with tantalum tenor increasing from NW towards the SE over relatively short distances, toward the TVC megaclast. Although highly speculative without robust geochronological and petrographic investigation, field observations from this study highlights that the host rocks to the Swanson Tantalum Deposit, namely the mottled hybrid metagabbro (HMG), usually described as being syn-D2 in age (∼ 1200 – 1100 Ma), may possibly be syn-D4 in age (∼ 1040 – 950 Ma). If this is proven to be true, it may represent the earliest syn-D4 melt known for the MRPSZ. An investigation of how a visual teaching approach can possibly address issues of mathematics anxiety at a selected school in the Oshikoto region of Namibia
This Namibian case study aimed to explore a visual teaching approach (VTA) used by three selected teachers to address issues of mathematics anxiety (MA). The three teachers took part in an intervention program that was looking at how a VTA could be grown in the context of an after-school club (ASC) at my school. The selected teachers were the senior primary teachers at my school. The focus of the research was on how they taught mathematics using visuals after participating in an intervention programme. Their VTA made use of manipulatives, visuals, and concrete materials. The learners of the participating teachers completed a big MA pre-test, small MA tests, and a big MA post-test to determine their levels of MA as the teaching programme unfolded. The study hoped to create awareness amongst teachers and education researchers about the significant use of a VTA in the teaching and learning of mathematics to address issues of MA among the learners. It aimed to answer three research questions. One was on teachers’ use of a VTA in the context of an ASC; the second one was on comparisons of learners’ MA big pre and post-tests to detect any change of MA, and the last was on the enabling and constraining factors encountered when using a VTA. The main argument was that a VTA can encourage learners to be more confident and less anxious about doing mathematics. This study was framed by a constructivist perspective and its design and methodology were underpinned by an interpretive paradigm. This mixed-method research study employed video-recorded observations and stimulated recall interviews, learners’ MA test results, and the teachers’ focus group interviews as the means of collecting data. To generate rich data and support validity, four lessons per selected teacher were observed and video recorded; 54 learners completed the MA tests of 16 questions, and three teachers answered seven questions each in the focus group interview (FGI) after the stimulus recall interviews (SRI) which were done immediately after the lesson presentations. The study found that the participating teachers incorporated a variety of visuals into their lessons to make the mathematics fun, inspiring, visible, hands-on, and activity-oriented. The emergence of isiZulu in Skeem Saam (2011)
This study aims to investigate how an ecological understanding of polyglossia is used in the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC) television channel, SABC 1 to maintain and create ethnolinguistic dominance. Key arguments this study will make are: (1) polyglossia is a language ideology masquerading as ethnolinguistic pluralism, (2) there is a loss of ethnolinguistic pluralism in SABC 1 because of the polyglot culture and its transmissions, (3) isiZulu is emerging as a language and cultural flare of the channel. This paper concluded that isiZulu’s presence is rising in a soap initially meant to be a Sepedi show. And this has negative consequences for language equality in the SABC
Crocheted cardigan
A cardigan jersey made by Ms Bam Senior, which evoked feelings of joy and warmth. In 1978 Ms Bam Senior visited Dr Brigalia Bam in Switzerland and was surprised by the cold weather and told Dr Bam to buy wool in order for her to knit a jersey to keep her warm. Dr Bam never wore the jersey after her return as it made her miss her mom greatly. Mrs Bam Senior sewed Dr. Bam's first coat that she wore at school and she hated wearing it as other children did not have clothes but little blankets. Hence she hid it at home in the garden instead of wearing it. She wanted to be like other children. Institutional innovations for improved water security in smallholder irrigation schemes in KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape Provinces, South Africa
Smallholder irrigation schemes are regarded as a key strategy to eliminate poverty and increase food security in rural areas in South Africa. While the South African government has invested heavily in rural development schemes, most irrigation schemes face a myriad of challenges, including deficient infrastructure, weak institutional arrangements and water insecurity. Weak institutions have been identified as a major bottleneck in the performance of smallholder irrigation schemes in developing countries, including South Africa. Two main reasons have been identified for this challenge. Firstly, the agency of the irrigators was ignored during the design of the schemes. Treating farmers as passive rather than active agents resulted in institutional arrangements that were not context-specific, as well as weak farmer commitment to the ownership and management of the schemes, leading to system breakdown. Despite being noble in intention or design, institutions designed by outsiders often fail due to a lack of legitimacy. Secondly, institutions have failed to evolve to cope with dynamic challenges and opportunities in the sector. Stability over a reasonable period is required for institutions to effectively perform their crucial role of establishing reasonable expectations in dealings among people. Institutional innovations are required to keep up with the changing nature of development. In particular, farmer-led institutional innovations have been touted as key to improving the management of water resources in irrigation schemes. Farmer-led institutional innovation refers to a process, in which farmers themselves initiate, establish, and improve institutions based on their context-specific challenges or opportunities. Farmers’ groups are regarded as an important institutional arrangement to reduce transaction costs, improve social networks, and increase livelihood outcomes. However, little is known about the internal dynamics of these farmer groups, how they operate, and whether or not they are inclusive and innovative, as well as what makes certain groups more successful than others. Furthermore, there is a paucity of research on whether these farmer groups embrace institutional innovations to improve water security and strengthen their design principles that are crucial for collective action. It is against this background that this study aimed to examine the internal group dynamics within the farmer groups; determine whether smallholder farmers are capable of implementing institutional innovations that are novel, useful and legitimate; determine the nature of these innovations (incremental or radical) and their role in improving water security. The main theories that underpinned the study were induced institutional innovation theory, collective action theory, random utility theory and Ostrom’s eight design principles. Multistage sampling was used to collect data from 28 farmer groups and 401 irrigators in smallholder irrigation schemes in KwaZulu-Natal (Tugela Ferry and Mooi River) and the Eastern Cape (Qamata and Zanyokwe). Data were gathered by means of focus group discussions, key informant interviews and household surveys. Several empirical tools were employed to analyse the data (descriptive statistics, thematic analysis, logit model, propensity score matching, PCA and OLS). The study found that group membership was associated with higher levels of water access, adoption of inorganic fertiliser, incomes and assets. Group members had an additional four days’ access to water in a month and applied at least 130 kg/ha more inorganic fertiliser than non-group members. Group members also had a higher household income per capita and more assets than non-group members. However, the results revealed a heterogeneous effect among group members, with the benefits varying according to members’ socio-economic characteristics as well as internal group dynamics. The results suggest that organising farmers into groups should be promoted to improve farmers’ access to productive assets such as water, technology adoption and welfare outcomes. However, the study findings also indicate that smaller groups should be promoted, programmes targeted at empowering women should be prioritised, and that it is imperative to invest in improving farmers’ human capital through various training initiatives. The results indicated that farmers could develop and implement institutional innovations that are novel, useful and legitimate. Of the 28 groups, 21 (75%) had implemented institutional innovations in the past three years. Examples of innovations include, among others, the introduction of a secret voting system to improve marginalised people’s participation in decision-making processes, designing daily rotation rosters to reduce conflict, using an attendance register for participation in group activities, and rewarding members according to their participation levels. Most of these innovations were designed to improve the graduated sanction mechanism (22.2%), enhance the penalty system for non-compliance; improve collective action arrangements (27.8%); monitor attendance of group meetings (18.5%); democratise decision making; and ensure equitable water distribution. However, they mainly focused on addressing challenges rather than exploiting opportunities and were largely incremental (94%), involving an adjustment or reinterpretation of rules and regulations. Furthermore, the innovative groups were small in size and were dominated by male farmers. Based on these results, it is recommended that the government should build on the irrigators’ agency to improve the effectiveness and legitimacy of institutional arrangements in irrigation schemes. The findings also suggest that small groups should be actively promoted, while tailored training should be offered based on the groups’ specific needs to improve institutional innovations in the smallholder irrigation sector in South Africa. A positive association was established between belonging to an innovative group and water security, highlighting the importance of institutional innovations in water security. The propensity score matching indicated that water secure irrigators produced an additional 569-622 kg of maize and earned additional income of R2 037.81. The study’s findings suggest that organising farmers into groups is a promising strategy to improve farmers livelihoods and water security. The government and private donors should thus continue to promote the formation and organisation of farmers into groups. The innovative agency of the irrigators should be acknowledged and harnessed to strengthen institutional innovations. The focus should be on strengthening the institutions designed by farmers themselves, as these are locally contextualised and socially embedded, and hence legitimate. The use of the cochineal insect, Dactylopius tomentosus Lamarck, as a biological control agent for the invasive alien thistle cholla, Cylindropuntia pallida (Rose) F.M. Knuth in South Africa
Cylindropuntia pallida (Rose) F.M. Knuth (Cactaceae) is an invasive alien plant in South Africa indigenous in the southern U.S.A. and Mexico. Large infestations of this species can be found in the Kalahari and arid Karoo regions of South Africa, which is also present in Namibia. Because it is a very spiny cactus, dense infestations have a negative impact on agriculture and natural ecosystems. This cactus has become naturalised to the extent that eradication is impossible and the negative impacts are steadily increasing due to its increasing distribution and density. The cochineal insect, Dactylopius tomentosus Lamarck (Dactylopiidae), is native in Mexico and parts of North America, such as Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico in the U.S.A. This cochineal species is highly specialized and associated only with Cylindropuntia species, a group of cacti that are primarily restricted to the same areas. It has been introduced into Australia and South Africa as a biological control agent to control various invasive alien Cylindropuntia species. This cochineal species has several biotypes specific to certain Cylindropuntia species hosts. A biotype is a clade that cannot be differentiated morphologically from others but has different host ranges and impacts depending on the host plant species. Included amongst biotypes that have been released in South Africa are D. tomentosus ‘imbricata’ and D. tomentosus ‘cholla’ for the biological control of Cylindropuntia imbricata (Haw.) F.M. Knuth (Cactaceae) and Cylindropuntia fulgida (Engelmann) F.M. Knuth var. mamillata (Schott ex Engelmann) Backeb. (Cactaceae), respectively. These biotypes have resulted in both host plants being under substantial control in South Africa. The first part of this thesis evaluated which of the two D. tomentosus biotypes already in use in South Africa could be an effective biological control agent for C. pallida. This was done by assessing the fitness of the cochineals on the three cactus species and assessing the impact that each of the cochineals has on each of the target weed species. Should these biotypes prove ineffective, there is a third biotype, namely D. tomentosus ‘californica var. parkerii’, which researchers in Australia have worked on and have found to be suitably host-specific for release in Australia and suitably damaging to C. pallida in that country. Therefore, this new biotype could be released in South Africa if it is required. Sexually compatible biological control agents, especially those closely related and occurring in close spatial proximity to one another, may interbreed and the impacts of this hybridisation are difficult to predict. It is important to understand the outcomes of the hybridisation of cochineal because it can affect the impact of the biological control agents and thus the control of the target weed. The second part of this thesis investigated the impacts of the hybridisation of the two cochineal biotypes by assessing the damage the agents would have on the target weed, and on C. imbricata and C. fulgida var. mamillata, in the presence of one or both cochineal biotypes. The ‘cholla’ biotype performed better on C. pallida than the ‘imbricata’ biotype, but neither biotype could control C. pallida to an extent similar to the control they provide for their respective target weeds, C. imbricata and C. fulgida var. mamillata. Both the ‘cholla’ biotype and hybrids of the two biotypes of cochineal were effective at killing C. pallida when both C. imbricata and C. fulgida var. mamillata were also present. This suggests that the ‘cholla’ or hybrids may be effective at controlling C. pallida when either C. imbricata or C. fulgida var. mamillata are also present in the field due to the high population density of cochineal that results under these circumstances. There are, however, many C. pallida infestations in South Africa where the plant is problematic and is isolated from other Cylindropuntia species, and these populations are unlikely to be controlled by the ‘cholla’ biotype or the hybrids. Neither of the cochineal biotypes that are used for biological control in South Africa are suitably damaging to C. pallida to warrant their use as biological control agents for this species. Dactylopius tomentosus ‘californica var. parkerii’ is therefore recommended for release based on its host-specificity and impact to C. pallida in Australia.Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science, Zoology and Entomology, 202
A case study assessment of the ecological and social status of the South African boat-based whale watching industry
Boat-based whale-watching (BBWW) is a rapidly growing marine tourism industry globally and in South Africa (SA). BBWW in SA was established in 1998, and since then the number of permits available has doubled from 20 to 40. However, the establishment and past growth of the industry was undertaken without ecological research or impact assessments. Global research has shown that BBWW has the potential to cause short-term changes in cetacean behaviour and movement, which in turn can have long-term population-level consequences. National policies to grow ocean economies in SA may encourage excessive growth in the BBWW industry, impacting the ecological sustainability. In the absence of long-term impact data, the BBWW industry should be managed to minimise short-term changes. This study aimed to determine the social and ecological status of the SA BBWW industry, using Plettenberg Bay as a case study, to inform its long term sustainability. To achieve this aim: 1) the short-term behavioural and movement responses of six cetacean species to encounters with commercial BBWW vessels were measured; 2) the efficacy of three permit regulations (approach speed, approach angle, and encounter duration) to prevent short-term behavioural changes in three cetacean species was measured; 3) rates of compliance of BBWWoperators with current regulations were recorded; 4) BBWW tourists’ expectations of and satisfaction with the industry were investigated; as well as 5) operators’ views on the current permit regulations of the industry All research was conducted between September 2018 and November 2020 in Plettenberg Bay (SA) where two BBWW companies operating two vessels each are active. English additional language student teachers’ development of oral strategic competence and confidence
This case study sought to understand how oral strategic and discourse competence and confidence developed in student teachers using English, their additional language, firstly as a tool of learning and secondly, as a medium of instruction in education environments. Within the broad qualitative approach an interpretive framework was adopted using multiple data collection tools. This was in order to privilege detailed accounts of participants’ experiences. Namely, unstructured interviews, drawings, observational checklists, and selfassessment questionnaires. Participants’ oral strategic and discourse competence were assessed using an observation checklist as they presented micro-teaching lessons. Additionally, participants completed a self-assessment questionnaire, reflecting on their oral competence after conducting their micro-teaching lessons. These perceptions were confirmed through a discussion of drawings that illustrated how they perceived themselves during lectures when they had to use English during oral interaction with lecturers and fellow students. Finally, unstructured interviews were conducted after participants completed their micro-teaching lessons and after participants had completed their drawings. The raw data from the four tools were analysed using a thematic approach. Main themes and categories were analysed and discussed to provide answers to the research questions. Data correlated the attitude of participants towards English and their level of oral confidence and competence. The main findings were that students were motivated to develop their oral English competence because they believed it was an important skill for teachers to possess. This motivation also proved to be a leading factor in participants’ competence despite the negative emotions they identified during spoken exchanges. Furthermore, the analysis found that collaborating with fellow students in making meaning of oral communication during lectures, increased students’ oral competence and their confidence because they were communicating in smaller groups. However, in certain situations, collaborating with students also decreased their confidence. Findings indicated that reciprocal facial expressions and the body language of those who engaged orally with the student teachers, increased their oral confidence as it served as an indication to them that they were understood. Based on these findings, recommendations are made regarding interactions during lectures for teacher training programmes in Higher Education in South Africa, for lecturers and lecturing practices, and curriculum designers in the South African Department of Education.Thesis (MEd) -- Faculty of Education, Education, 202
Status of physical activity and physical fitness among intermediate-phase schoolchildren from marginalised communities in Port Elizabeth
The purpose of the study was to investigate the current status of physical activity (PA) and physical fitness (PF) of intermediate-phase schoolchildren from marginalised communities in Port Elizabeth. A total of 985 schoolchildren (n=505 boys, n=474 girls) aged 8 to 16 years, from eight quintile 3 government schools participated in this study. These schools included four schools from the Township area and four from the Northern areas in Port Elizabeth. The tests included in the study were PA (Actigraph accelerometer), PF (20 m shuttle run test and grip strength), and body composition (body mass index and body fat percentage). Results showed that girls had higher body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage (BF%), lower VO2max, less time spent on average per day on moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and lower grip strength (GS) as compared to boys (p0.05). No significant differences were found between the two geographic areas with regards to VO2max, GS, BMI and BF% (p>0.05). However, when confounding variables were considered, there was a significant difference in the BMI (p=0.0007), BF% (p=0.0003) and GS (p=0.0004) of the children from the two geographic areas. A negative correlation was found between VO2max and BMI A positive correlation was found between VO2max and MVPA . Overall, girls seem to be more at risk than boys for future non communicable diseases. My thesis is a novella that casts a sideways glance at the real world that at times seems stranger than fiction. The novella is written as a work of realistic fiction, with a plot, characters, timelines and location placed in present time, reflecting real current events. My work is strongly influenced by writers such as Ivan Vladislavić whose Portrait with Keys uses a slice of life narrative voice that observes overlays of public and private realities; Marguerite Duras’ use of cinematic storytelling and deeply personal exposure in The Lover and Yann Andréa Steiner; Kate Zambreno’s depiction of inner chaos against the chaos of an anonymous city in Green Girl; Otessa Moshfegh who makes the minutiae of the day-to-day seem significant in My Year of Rest and Relaxation; and Samuel Beckett’s finely crafted streams of consciousness, in his works of prose and drama, revealing the intimate perspectives of insiders.Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, School of Languages and Literatures, 202
