    Perceptions of South African original equipment manufacturers about pursuing new global electrical vehicle strategy

    Global strategy in the automotive industry focusses on limiting climate changes and preservation of natural resources by gradually shifting towards non-gas emission transportation such as electrical vehicles (EVs). The strategic thinking and planning have advanced significantly globally. Automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEM’s) are responding to this growing demand of EVs by focusing investments on the research and development (R&D) and setting up manufacturing facilities. This EV strategy showed great degree of success already over the past few years. (Nathalie Ortar & Marianne Ryghaug, 2019) In 2013, sales of EVs were introduced in the South African market. The adoption of EVs is very low and existing studies suggest consumer perceptions towards EVs and possible social economic barriers in the South African automotive market prevent the adoption or intention to purchase EVs. The purpose of this research study was to unpack perception withholding the uptake of the EVs manufacturing in South Africa. It aimed to assess the barriers of the local automotive industry in pursuing the global strategy. The research structure was realised through conducting a literature review to explore the existing research topic. Empirical research evidence was obtained through conducting interviews which targeted existing OEMs whom the parent plants are currently manufacturing EVs globally. The study focused on key factors such as consumer knowledge, local infrastructure, and market uncertainty about EVs. The findings of the study highlighted consumers are knowledgeable about the benefits of owning EVs. However, the willingness set up a manufacturing infrastructure for EVs was highly not favourable for a majority of the factors such as power supply shortage, EVs supply chain shortage, small local market, and lack of proactive policies to drive EVs adoption or attract global investment. With these perceived positive opinions from respondents, it is down to government and private companies to work in cohesion to provide a conducive environment for EVs manufacturing in future.Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Business and Economic science, 202

    Quantifying the impacts of cactus biological control agents in South Africa

    Invasive alien cacti are prominent weeds that threaten indigenous biodiversity and have a negative impact on agricultural productivity in South Africa. These plants are problematic because they form dense thickets that reduce the carrying capacity of rangelands; restrict the movement of livestock and wildlife thus reducing access to shade and water sources; and are directly harmful to livestock, wildlife and people due to their sharp spines. Biological control is the most effective, affordable and environmentally friendly method to control invasive alien cacti and minimize their negative impacts. Cochineal insects (Dactylopius spp.: Dactylopiidae) and the gall-forming mealybug, Hypogeococcus sp. (Pseudococcidae) are used as biological control agents for cacti. The agents are however poor dispersers, so mass-rearing and augmentative releases are required in order to establish the agents at sites where they are needed. This study aimed to evaluate the mass-rearing and release efforts of cactus biological control in South Africa, quantify the impact of the biological control agents on cactus plant populations through long-term monitoring, and assess the benefits accrued due to the biological control agents through the perceptions of land-users. An assessment of the effectiveness of the release effort for cactus biological control agents was conducted by comparing where biological control agents have been released with the known distribution of the target weeds. Only 26% of the quarter degree squares that are known to be occupied by invasive alien cacti have had biological control agents released in them. This indicated that the mass-rearing and release efforts in South Africa are inadequate and should be increased, especially in areas where few releases have been made and many cacti are present, such as the Limpopo Province. The impact of the biological control agents on cactus plant populations was assessed by monitoring agent densities, target plant densities and target plant reproductive outputs before and after releases. Plant biomass and reproductive output were reduced by biological control agents for three of the target weeds that were assessed, while the duration of the study was too short to measure reductions for the fourth target weed. Benefits to land-users were then quantified through a questionnaire survey. Land-users perceived biological control as an effective management option, with 81% of the land-users reporting that there was less invasive alien cactus after releasing biological control agents on their land. Forty-nine percent of the land-users believed that the negative impacts of the cactus had been reduced and that they benefited more from their land since control was achieved. Since land-users were only interviewed within four years of the releases being conducted, it is expected that the percentage of land-users who gained benefits from biological control will increase in future. Ninety-seven percent of the land-users stated that the agents were safe and had not fed on any other plants or had any detrimental impacts. These perceptions indicated that land-users regarded biological control as a safe and effective method of controlling invasive alien cacti. This study confirms that biological control is an effective and safe way of controlling invasive alien Cactaceae. It is also the first to assess some of the benefits that land-users have accrued due to biological control of cactus weeds.     Digital finance and poverty in selected Sub-Saharan Countries

    Since the 21st century, digital finance has emerged as a critical enabler and an excellent tool for meeting the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through increasing financial inclusion and poverty reduction. The objective of achieving universal financial access by 2030 has led to recognising that financial inclusion has a significant role in economic growth and poverty eradication. The literature demonstrates that access to finance can affect poverty through access to credit, enabling savings, thereby facilitating intertemporal consumption smoothing. Digital finance is key to unlocking financial inclusion, particularly in developing countries. Building capacity in digital payments is one of the best ways to ensure a faster, better, and more cost-effective way to access financial services. The gender gap in developing countries states that (59% of men were reported to have a bank account in 2014, while 50% of women only had a bank account). Some groups, including women and the rural poor, are financially excluded compared to others. This study applied panel data regression analysis and structural equation modelling to investigate the nature of digital finance, its relationship with poverty and the transmission mechanism from digital finance to poverty in selected Sub-Saharan Countries. The results indicate that remittance is one of the most significant determinants of the use of digital finance in the Sub-Saharan region compared to other determinants of use for digital finance. Regarding the transmission mechanism between digital finance and poverty, the path analysis results suggest that the channel for remittance in the transmission mechanism has a more substantial impact on reducing poverty than savings in the Sub-Saharan region. The study recommends that remittance is essential, but savings are not critical in this digital age. This study contributed to literature by identifying the transmission mechanism between digital finance and poverty. This is beneficial to researchers and policymakers . It provides policy practitioners with a reference point on a model to build upon towards providing solutions to the problem, Sub-Saharan Countries encounter on delivering sustainable and broad-based economic growth.     Decoration of glass wool with zinc (II) phthalocyanine for the photocatalytic transformation of methyl orange

    Zinc phthalocyanines containing one (mono carboxy phenoxy, ZnMCPPc), four (tetra carboxy phenoxy, ZnTCPPc), and eight (tetra isophthalic acid, ZnTIPAPc) carboxyl groups were covalently conjugated to amine-functionalized glass wool (GW). The GW-Pcs were characterized and evaluated for singlet oxygen generation. The photocatalytic efficiencies of the GW-Pcs were assessed using methyl orange. Glass wool alone and the modified conjugates exhibited low to no degradation of methyl orange in the dark. The improved catalytic rate was observed for GW-ZnMCPPc and GW-ZnTCPPc compared to GW-ZnTIPAPc due to the latter's lower singlet oxygen quantum yield generation. In addition, the modified glass wool was recyclable, making it suitable candidates for future environmental applications

    A survey of food safety practices and microbial risk related to ready-to-eat chicken in food outlets from a university campus in South Africa was investigated. The objective of the study was to determine the food safety practices and hygiene knowledge of food handlers in food outlets at a South African university campus. Six food outlets out of the thirteen university food outlets that were similar in type were selected for the study. These six food outlets were selected based on establish criteria but did not comply with HACCP principles. To assess the possible contamination risk related to hygiene practices and processing of ready-to-eat chicken, Total Viable Count, Escherichia coli, Salmonella and Staphylococcus aureus counts were determined using standard methods. A validated questionnaire was used to assess the educational levels of each of the 27 participating food handlers; as well as the determination of the food handlers’ personal and general hygiene. Microbial levels of each food handler hand, aprons, as well as the microbial contamination levels of direct food contact surfaces, and ready-to-eat chicken at each facility were evaluated using standard methods. Several risky non-conforming personal and general hygiene practices were detected during the study. Appropriate corrective actions such as an intensive food hygiene training programme accompanied by a food management system should be implemented in all food facilities.Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Health Sciences, 202

    The biology of Oreochromis mossambicus and vulnerability to the invasion of Oreochromis niloticus

    Mozambique tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus, a native southern African species now co-occurs with invasive Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus throughout much of the distribution of the former. The spread of O. niloticus in South Africa has been attributed to escapees from aquaculture facilities, placing O. mossambicus at risk through competition for habitat and food resources, as well as through hybridisation. To better manage invasions, a comprehensive understanding of the biology, ecology and behaviour of both native and invasive species is required. The aim of this research was to comparatively assess the biology of O. mossambicus and O. niloticus, their food resource use characteristics and potential competitive interactions to infer impact risks associated with O. niloticus invasion dynamics. In addition to lack of sufficient autecological knowledge on O. niloticus in general, the challenge in the Eastern Cape is that relatively little regional knowledge is available on the biology and ecology of the native O. mossambicus. To address this, a total of 101 O. mossambicus individuals (32 - 297 mm LT) were sampled from the Sunday River catchment and their age and growth determined using sectioned sagittal otoliths. The largest female was 288.8 mm with a parameter estimate of LT (mm) = 272 (1-e-0.331(t=0.772)) and the largest male was 297 mm described as LT (mm) = 331.9 (1-e-0.167(t=1.192)). The growth parameter estimate age for combined sexes was best described as LT (mm) = 322.5 (1-e-0.201(t=1.027)). The growth rate was initially rapid for O. mossambicus and the asymptotic length reached after four years. The length-at-50% maturity was reached at 106.45 mm LT (R2 = 0.57) for the entire population. There was a significant difference (ᵡ2 = 8,047, df = 1, p-value = 0.0045) in the sex ratio between males and females which was skewed towards males 1:1.89 (F:M). Comparisons with O. niloticus were based on literature and these showed that O. niloticus had faster growth rates than O. mossambicus. These results serve as a baseline study in predicting the potential impacts of O. niloticus if it was to be introduced in the Eastern Cape region. Furthermore, although these two species are known to share habitat and food resources, feeding dynamics within the context of relative impact on prey resources, and competition potential between the species, are largely lacking. I used experimental functional response procedures to contrast the food consumption dynamics of each species and to assess for any multiple predator effects (MPEs) between these two closely related fishes. This was done by contrasting functional responses between individual species under single predator scenarios, predicted multiple predator functional response dynamics based on the individual species outputs, and actually observed functional responses under multiple predator conditions. Results showed that both Nile tilapia and Mozambique tilapia depicted a destabilizing Type II functional response. In both single and conspecific pairing Nile tilapia had significantly greater functional responses than Mozambique tilapia, hence greater overall predatory potential than its native congeneric Mozambique tilapia. Attack rates were also greater for Nile tilapia than Mozambique tilapia with both species showing similar handling times in single trials. However, no evidence for MPEs were detected, given lack of differences between predicted and observed functional responses under heterospecific conditions. These results suggest that Nile tilapia do not adjust their food intake in the presence of heterospecific competitors, but do consume more than Mozambique tilapia and are better at finding food when it is present at low densities. Feeding-related morphological characteristics may influence predatory performance of a species and can further provide information on the species’ capacity to locate, attack and consume different prey items. The feeding capacities between O. mossambicus and O. niloticus were compared based on morphological traits in order to determine whether differences existed, and if these differences place the invasive O. niloticus at an advantageous position in terms of resource acquisition and consumption over its native congener. Principal component analysis for functional morphology traits showed overlap between O. niloticus and O. mossambicus. Oreochromis niloticus had distinctively larger lower jaw closing force, gill resistance and gill raker length which facilitated greater feeding capacities for the invasive species over the native O. mossambicus. Trophic profiles depicted high dietary overlap between the two species. Although O. niloticus had a greater feeding capacity towards phytoplankton, plants, fish (ambush), fish (pursuit) and larvae, while O. mossambicus only showed greater feeding capacity towards zooplankton. While dietary overlap and similarities in morphological traits between native and invasive species may result in exploitative competition between the species, O. niloticus seems to be more versatile in its feeding and capable of consuming food web components that O. mossambicus may not be able to handle.Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Zoology and Entomology, 202

    A critical assessment of credit provision governance in South Africa with a focus on balancing the rights and responsibilities of credit providers and consumers under Section 129 of the National Credit Act 34 of 2005

    The National Credit Act of 2005 (the NCA), described as the fourth generation of consumer protection legislation in South Africa, is the product of an initiative by the Department of Trade and Industry to address the shortcomings of the third generation of consumer protection legislation, being the Usury Act 73 of 1968 and the Credit Agreements Act 75 of 1980. The NCA seeks to unify legislation and departs radically from the old dispensation. Its aims are, inter alia, to provide a fair and non-discriminatory marketplace, to prohibit unfair credit practices and reckless lending, to establish national norms and standards relating to consumer credit and to promote a consistent enforcement framework relating to consumer credit. Through enactment of the NCA the government appears to have focused on the protection of consumers through pre-enforcement procedures, prohibitions on reckless lending practices, prevention of over-indebtedness, alleviation of over indebtedness, and an array of other measures. This protection is deemed necessary due to the relative unequal bargaining power between the credit provider (provider) and the consumer at the time of conclusion of an agreement. This consumer protection has, however, sometimes come at the cost of provider protection. Despite these endeavours, there is still the inevitably common occurrence of breach of the agreement by consumers and the ensuing recovery process available to providers. The relationship between the two major role players – the provider and consumer - is the epicentre of any discussion, theory or legislative enactment pertaining to credit. This study commences with an examination of the historical background and rationale for the NCA, putting into context the rules and regulations which govern the relationship between the parties when an agreement is breached as well as the remedies and recourses that are available to the aggrieved party in terms of the NCA. The common law, which acts as a stabiliser especially when there are legislative changes, is examined in relation to preenforcement procedures, breach and the remedies as affected by the NCA. The equitable balancing of the rights and responsibilities of these two major role players is essential to the continued well-being of not only the parties but also the credit industry and economy as a whole. The most common way for individuals to purchase any large asset like a home or motor vehicle is to approach a financial institution for provision of a loan or credit agreement. To protect its interest, the financial institution would normally register a mortgage bond over the property or hold the title of the motor vehicle until all instalments have been settled. The problem arises when the consumer defaults on repayment of the loan or credit agreement. The financial institution would then be forced to institute legal proceedings to for example foreclose on the bond and repossess the property or motor vehicle. The preenforcement procedure finds itself in the centre of the tug of war between the parties in that this is the area and time that both parties require their rights and interests to be protected. The pre-enforcement procedures determine to a large extent, if properly implemented, how many agreements are seen to successful finalisation versus the alternative of those being cancelled and / or enforcement pursued through litigation by the provider. Successful implementation of agreements and repayment of debt would support a healthy credit industry and therefore, a strong economy. This is also the favoured outcome by the NCA. Section 129 of the NCA encapsulates the pre-enforcement procedure and thus determines balancing the parties’ rights and responsibilities through its interpretation and application. The section, however, would appear to fall short in that the delivery requirement of the notice is not adequately defined and has therefore resulted in many disputes, interpretations and two subsequent amendments to the section by the National Credit Amendment Act of 2014 and 2019. The purpose of this study is to critically analyse section 129 of the NCA and determine if the rights of both the consumer and provider have been equally protected, with particular reference to the burden of bringing the section 129 notice to the attention of the consumer. The question posed by all parties involved is always inevitably: Must the section 129 notice come to the actual knowledge of the consumer in order for it to be valid? The answer to this question has varied between two schools of thought. The first school of thought, being the pro-provider approach, answers the question in the negative and holds that as long as the provider has met certain delivery requirements their duty has been fulfilled whether or not the consumer actually receives the notice. The second school of thought, being the pro-consumer approach, answers the questions in the affirmative and requires the provider to carry the burden of ensuring the consumer actually receives the notice in order for it to be valid. There are numerous reasons in support of both schools of thought. It is hoped that this study will make a helpful contribution to the balanced interpretation of section 129.
