Hooked on Gqom: an ethnographic study of a contemporary urban youth musical identity in South Africa
Gqom music has grown from being a relatively obscure sub-genre of South African Kwaito into a globally recognised sonic identity and social movement. Gqom, as a distinct music style, has featured heavily in mass media since 2015, spawning social phenomena such as viral dance challenges on various social media platforms, and constituting a launch pad for the careers of musicians such as DJ Lag and the Distruction Boyz. Gqom also featured in the international motion picture Black Panther in 2018, and in the 2019 Lion King: The Gift album by American pop icon Beyoncé. Although the origins of Gqom, its characteristics, impact, and ascension to noteworthiness have received attention in the form of newspaper articles, online blogs, YouTube documentaries, etc, and small treatises or academic articles, little literature has been generated about the music and its theoretical construction as sonic and social phenomena. I argue that by using the theoretical scaffolds of ‘identity politics’, specifically ‘identities in music’, one is better able to understand Gqom as reflective of a broader social urban youth identity characterised by partying and political disillusionment. In other words, I make the case for an intergroup identification that prioritises in-group musical identities associated with Gqom and its phenomenology of practices which I have excavated using an ethnographic qualitative method.Thesis (MMus) -- Faculty of Humanities, School of Visual and performing Arts, 202
Global climate justice: the case of climate migrants
Climate change is predicted to displace thousands of people across the globe. Due to their geographical location and limited resources available for adaptation, this will particularly impact those in developing states, who might have to flee from the growing frequency and severity of rising sea levels, drought and desertification, and acute natural disasters such as floods, wildfires, and hurricanes. This is likely to have pervasive effects on the moral interests of those affected, threatening loss of life, the deterioration of livelihoods, and for small island states even complete or substantial loss of state territory. In this thesis I will argue that we should conceive of this situation as a problem of global justice. Though some argue that questions of justice only arise within the state, I will argue that global economic and political institutions have contributed to the plight of climate migrants, and that following from Darrel Moellendorf’s theory of associational justice, this enduring impact results in an association and duties of justice that transcend state borders. To respect the dignity of climate migrants, such an unjust association needs to be rectified by establishing ethical principles that could be reasonably endorsed by everyone affected. Drawing from Gillian Brock, I will argue that the best way to rectify the situation is through establishing a principle of distributive justice which focuses on ‘agency needs’: needs whose fulfilment is necessary for human agency. Using this framework, I then provide some recommendations of what is owed to climate migrants to achieve justice for them. I also consider how these duties of justice should be distributed, first critiquing a dominant approach that attributes duties primarily to polluters. In the end, I recommend that duties should be dispersed between all those who support the global institutions responsible, those who have been high polluters since 1990, and the most affluent in the world. As the effects of climate change become increasingly pronounced within the next fifty years, establishing what is owed to those displaced is of utmost importance, and I hope this thesis shows how normative philosophy can help us think through these urgent questions.Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, Philosophy, 202
Settling in: Investigating the experiences of social media use of a group of international students in their integration into the Rhodes University environment
The South African government and its institutions of higher education take deliberate measures to attract international students to this country which is marketed as an appealing option for for international study because it is cheaper than in European countries and the US, courses that may be unavailable or difficult to get into in their home countries are available in South Africa, there is a high quality of education, a greater variety of qualifications, technologically advanced facilities and a geographical proximity of South Africa to international students’ home countries in the SADC region. While many international students find living in a new country exciting, fulfilling and stimulating, it may at the same time be frustrating and confusing. Students may find it difficult to adjust to their general living arrangements, new housing and transportation environments and dealing with financial and health care concerns. Also, there may be academic challenges and socio-cultural difficulties to navigate. Problems of adjustment may force international students into isolation, creating feelings of alienation and so they develop mechanisms to adjust, to feel better integrated and cope with situations that they might find difficult and alienating. One of the most important of these is to find social support which can come from friends, family, academic staff, classmates or colleagues. Social networking through social media is also important as it can ameliorate feelings of alienation and contribute significantly to the creation of an active social network and its use is therefore associated with social support for, and social adjustment of international students. This study investigates the positive and negative impacts of social media on the integration of international students into the Rhodes University environment. The study uses an exploratory survey, focus groups and semi-structured interviews to gather data which was analysed using a thematic analysis. This analysis shows that international students make use of a variety social media platforms, each with its own specific purpose – WhatsApp to communicate with friends and family, Twitter for news, Instagram for entertainment and Facebook for information and entertainment, etc. Interestingly, while social media is used in the maintenance of strong social connections it is not used to create those relationships. Rather, meeting new people and the initiation and building of relationships was done through meeting at parties and pubs and in university organised social events, clubs and societies. While social media reporting of issues like xenophobic attacks made international students anxious, none of those involved in the study were subjected to such attacks through social media.Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, School of Journalism and Media Studies, 202
Exploring primary school mathematics teachers use of gamification in formative assessment: a case study
Technology integration has gained much influence with the emergence of technological tools in educational areas. The vast resources and opportunities that technologies and the Internet have brought new approaches, strategies, and tools to assess learners' performance in many subject areas. Teachers have many computer/mobile device applications and learning management systems. Most teachers are trying new ways of integrating technology into the mathematics classroom to increase the quality of teaching and learning. Thus, this study explored how primary school mathematics teachers use Kahoot as a formative assessment tool. The study adopted an exploratory case study underpinned by the interpretive paradigm. It was conducted in a primary school in the Shiselweni Region in Swaziland. The participants were ten mathematics teachers teaching different grades at the school. Data was generated using observations, workshops, structured questionnaires, journal reflections and focus group interviews. The theoretical and analytical framework that underpinned this study was a combination of Davis' (1989) Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Mishra & Koehler's (2006) Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework. The study results showed that the perceptions and attitudes of primary school mathematics teachers towards using Kahoot generally appear to be positive. The study also revealed that all the participants found Kahoot helpful and perceived it as easy to use. The study found that the provision of technical support for teachers; and financial support for schools to implement technology use in the classroom were enabling factors for using Kahoot as a formative assessment technology. Constraining factors were lack of high-speed internet connectivity; and lack of basic technological knowledge for using Kahoot in formative assessment. The study concluded that Kahoot increases learner motivation, engagement, attention, enjoyment, and knowledge retention. This study recommended the integration of Kahoot gamification into the mathematics curriculum.The study recommends that there is a need for schools to initiate the presence of technologies in mathematics classrooms and encourage teachers to integrate technologies assessment and teaching. Livestock ecosystem services and disservices in a medium-sized South African town
Production of livestock in urban spaces is a common phenomenon globally, particularly in the Global South. Livestock provides multiple benefits to society yet its production in urban spaces can result in adverse impacts to residents that can trigger conflicts. Understanding of the ecosystem services and disservices of livestock from the perspectives of residents can inform inclusive local management plans. Using household surveys and key informant interviews, this study sought to examine the contribution of livestock to owners, and perceptions of livestock services and disservices among non-livestock owners and key informants in Makhanda, a medium-sized South African town. Livestock owners derived multiple benefits from their livestock, including provisioning services such as meat, milk, skins and draught, and use livestock and livestock products in cultural activities such as rituals, bride price payments and funerals that are key elements of local identity. Among residents, there were marked differences in perceptions on the services and disservices of livestock which points to potential conflicts over urban land use and the need for addressing trade-offs. A key trade-off for local municipal authorities is addressing hunger and poverty by supporting well-regulated urban livestock production versus managing potential livestock disservices such as injuries to humans, livestock-vehicle collisions, health hazards and damage to urban green infrastructure. The trade-offs should be understood and considered by local authorities and residents as a basis for collectively developing strategies that can integrate livelihoods and cultural realities to balance competing demands for urban spaces including livestock production and other uses
Synthesis and in vitro biological studies of ursolic acid-based hybrid compounds
Ursolic acid UA, a pentacyclic triterpenoid that is commonly found in many medicinal herbs and fruits, has been identified as a potential source of therapeutic agents because of its potent biological effects, which include its potential anticancer and antimicrobial activities. However, its limited solubility, rapid metabolism and poor bioavailability inhibit its clinical applications. Numerous UA derivatives have been prepared over the past years in an effort to mitigate the drawbacks associated with UA, as new chemical entities for the treatment of various infections. There is very little progress in the discovery of efficient UA derivatives. In this study, a class of ester and amide-linked ursolic acid-based hybrid compounds fused with selected pharmaceutical scaffolds were successfully synthesized using amidation and esterification reactions and tested for antibacterial and cytotoxicity activities. Hybridizing UA with other known pharmaceutical scaffolds has the potential of overcoming its drawbacks. FT-IR, Mass Spectroscopy, and 1H13C-NMR spectroscopy were used to confirm the structures of the synthesized hybrid compounds. Among the tested ester-linked hybrid compounds in Chapter three, compounds 3.14-3.19,3.21, 3.34, 3.31, and 3.30 demonstrated significant antibacterial activities against some tested bacteria, with MIC values of 15.625 μgml. Furthermore, the in vitro cytotoxicity of these hybrids was determined using the MTT assay against three human tumor cell lines MCF7, MDA-MB-231, and HeLa cells. Compounds 3.19 and 3.34 were found to have better cytotoxic activity when compared to ursolic acid, with IC50 values of 46.99 and 48.18 μg ml respectively. Both compounds revealed more promising docking results, presenting favourable binding interactions as well as better docking energy against the MCF 7 protein target compared to the parent compound ursolic acid. In Chapter Four, among the tested amide-linked hybrid compounds, Compounds 4.17 and 4.24 demonstrated significant antibacterial activity against the majority of bacterial strains with MIC values of 15.625 gml. Compound 4.24 exhibited a MIC value of 15.625gmL against BS, SA, PV, KO, PM, and EC. Compound 4.23 was more cytotoxic to HeLa cells than ursolic acid. Furthermore, molecular docking calculations revealed that compound 4.16 strongly binds to the protein epidermal growth factor receptor while e compounds 4.17 and 4.24 showed a strong binding affinity for the methionyl-tRNA synthetase. In both cases, the hybrid compounds showed better conformational fittings in the active site of the targeted proteins as compared to the parent ursolic acid.Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science and Agriculture, 202
Adsorption of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and their cell-free deoxyribonucleic acid harbouring resistance genes in drinking water with metal oxides
Access to cleaner water is essential to human health. The incidence of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria ARB in drinking water and subsequent proliferation of Antibiotic Resistance Genes ARGs in drinking water is a concern for public health. The free DNA cassette harboring antibiotic resistance gene in drinking water has been linked with impaired public health. The ARGs allows bacteria to develop resistance towards antibiotics while ARB render antibiotics ineffective. Existing drinking water treatment technologies eg adsorption, ozonation and chlorination, have shown different levels of potency in the removal of conventional water pollutant. These technologies, which operating principles is based on oxidation or mass transfer, have been explored to gained an insight into their efficiency in the removal of ARB ARGs in water treatment. In general, methods that functions by mass transfer of the ARB ARGs is more effectively than bacteria oxidation. Consequently, adsorption technology was chosen using common metal oxide adsorbents. The adsorbents ZnOAg CeO2 and Al2O3 were synthesized via the self propagation combustion method. This method was selected because of the purity of the final product and the energy requirement. One of the challenges in the removal of ARB in drinking water is the release of ARGs. To address this concern, five different ZnOAg heterostructures were synthesized for the removal of Enterococci faecium. ZnOAg was chosen because of the bactericidal and bacteriostatic characteristics. The study revealed that the concentration of the precursors influences the microstructures of the adsorbents; however, it did not significantly affect the adsorption efficiency. The maximum adsorption capacity q34.11 CFUg was obtained for Ag1Zn3.5. The kinetic studies revealed that Ag1Zn1 and Ag1Zn2 adsorbents agreed to the pseudofirst-order kinetic equation and adsorbents Ag2Zn1 Ag3.5Zn1 and Ag1Zn3.5 agreed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. Initial tap-water pH range was beneficial for the adsorption and the pH of the treated tap-water was within the WHO tap water recommendation 6.5 – 8.5 whereas the effect of ionic strength, anionic and cationic interference was insignificant in the adsorption of MDREF onto the different heterostructure. Interestingly the MDREF could retain its cell membrane integrity and resistance genes, suggesting that surface adsorption was the primary mechanism for the removal. Cerium IV oxide CeO2 was selected because of high adsorption towards phosphate, backbone base for DNA. To prevent the problem of antibiotic resistance, we have synthesized a CeO2 adsorbent that exhibit highly positive character in a wide pH range, via the simple self-propagation combustion protocol, for the removal of free DNA harboring antibiotic resistance genes. Molecular characterization of the extracted genes showed that the sizes for E. coli and inherent gyrB genes are 147 and 460 bp with a purity between 19 2.0. The XRD SEM TEM, and PZC results of the as-synthesized CeO2 showed an agglomerate of pure cubic-faced centered material and highly crystalline, with a net charge at pH 6.2. Experimental results revealed that the reaction proceeded via pseudo first-order kinetic, and it is governed by electrostatic attraction. The free- DNA solution pH electrolyte, and competing ions impacted on the adsorption process. Further experimental results showed that the as-synthesized CeO2 adsorbent has the potential to be used for the removal of free DNA harboring ARGs from tap-water even under oxic conditions. Alumina Al2O3 is an abundant adsorbent that has also shown high removal capacity towards phosphate. The highly pure synthesized Al2O3 adsorbent exhibit fluid-like behaviour under Scanning Electron Microscope SEM. The XRD pattern corresponds to αAl2O3. The adsorption kinetics was described by pseudo second orderadsorption capacity 11.7 μgg implying chemisorption, which agrees with the electrostatic force of attraction caused by opposing ions. This result was evident by the effect of different ions in the tap water. The synthesized α-Al2O3 has the potential for the removal of cell free DNA harbouring multiply resistant genes.Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science and Agriculture, 202
Environmental governance, agency and multi-actor dynamics in Southern Africa
Natural resources have, since the beginning of time, played a central role in supporting human wellbeing. In southern Africa resource consumption has drastically increased over the past 50 years, resulting in biodiversity loss and land degradation. To reduce land degradation and biodiversity loss rates in the region, great emphasis has been placed on building effective governance structures that can deliver environmentally and socially sustainable outcomes. However, environmental governance continues to be a major challenge in the management and conservation of natural resources in the region. Thus, there is renewed scientific and policy interest in strengthening the capacity of governance systems. This thesis is timely; there is an increasing desire by policymakers and land users in the region to develop governance options that enhance multi-actor participation and collaboration. Therefore, this thesis explores the dynamics that influence the capacity of natural resource governance systems in southern Africa, predominately in Machubeni, South Africa (chapters 3 and 4) and in State forests in Zimbabwe (chapter 5). To achieve this aim, four stand-alone manuscripts that answer the following questions are included: 1. How have governance challenges manifested in natural resource management between 2010 and 2020 in southern Africa? 2. How were the governance objectives and attributes applied per historical period and what were the influencing drivers? a. What key drivers influenced rangeland condition over time in Machubeni? 3. How have multi-actor ties changed since the external investment in landscape governance and management in Machubeni, South Africa? 4. What role has agency played in the effectiveness of co-management initiatives in southern Africa? To answer the questions, I applied Bennett and Satterfield’s practical framework for understanding the objectives, attributes and elements of governance and Archer’s ii morphogenetic framework. The study employed a mixed-methods approach which included a scoping review methodology (chapter 2), household surveys, historical records, life history interviews, focus group discussions (chapters 3 and 4), social network analysis (chapter 4) and secondary data analysis (chapter 5). Results from the scoping review (chapter 2) show that research on governance challenges has not increased since 2010. Results suggest that governance challenges related to the maintenance of system integrity and functioning, specifically lack of coordination, accountability, skills, and resources to define effective natural resource management, were the most reported in the literature. Chapter 3 elucidates the importance of history in evaluating the application of governance objectives and rangeland condition in resource-poor areas. The results show that the residual impacts of the ‘ghost of environmental history’ still influence governance dynamics in Machubeni, South Africa. Furthermore, contemporary challenges are linked to history. Chapter 4 shows that transformative spaces enhance collaboration and knowledge sharing between land users, government, and researchers. Finally, chapter 5 employs the morphogenetic framework to assess how agency (the capacity of people and organisations to make choices and decisions about their lives) influenced the effectiveness of co-management initiatives in southern Africa. The results suggest that in attempts to shift governance towards greater effectiveness, more attention should be paid to building individual and group agency. Based on the results from the empirical chapters, the study identified three key focus areas that require more attention in order to build effective landscape governance and management in southern Africa:(i) acknowledging the role of historical legacies and context,(ii) building and developing agency, capacity and trust amongst actors and (iii) the development of sustainable landscape financing mechanisms that will enable governance systems to deliver socially and environmentally sustainable outcomes.Ubutyebi bendalo buqhubekile budlala indima ebalulekileyo ekuxhaseni impilo-ntle yoluntu. An investigation of traveling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs) in the SANAE HF radar data
This thesis aims to study the characteristics of traveling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs) as identified in the radar data of the South African National Antarctic Expedition (SANAE) Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) radar located in Antarctica. For this project, 22 TIDs were identified from visual inspection of range time-intensity (RTI) plots of backscattered power and Doppler velocity parameters of the SANAE radar between 2005âAS2015. These events were studied to determine their characteristics and driving mechanisms. Where good quality data were available, the SANAE HF radar data were supplemented by Halley radar data, which has large area of overlapping field of view (FOV) with the SANAE radar, and also by GPS TEC data. This provided a multi-instrument data analysis of some TID events. Different spectral analysis methods, namely the multitaper method (MTM), Fast Fourier transform (FFT) and the Lomb-Scargle periodogram were used to obtain spectral information of the observed waves. The advantage of using multiple windowing in MTM over the traditional windowing method was illustrated using one of the TID events. In addition, the analytic signal of the wave from the MTM method was used to estimate the instantaneous phase velocity and propagation azimuth of the wave, which was able to track the change in the characteristics of the medium-scale TID (MSTID) efficiently throughout the duration of the event. This is a clear advantage over other windowing techniques. The energy contribution by this MSTID through Joule heating was estimated over the region where spectral analysis of both SANAE and Halley data showed it to be present. The majority of the TIDs (65.4%) could be classified as MSTIDs with periods of 20–60 minutes, velocities of 50–333 ms1 and wavelengths of 129–833 km. The TID occurrence rate was high around the March equinox with 12 out of the 16 event days being during March–May. March had a particularly high number of occurrences of TIDs (46%). The majority of the TIDs observed during this month propagated northward or southeastward. In terms of prevailing geomagnetic conditions, 6 out of 16 event days were geomagnetically quiet, while 10 occurred during geomagnetic storms and substorms. During quiet conditions, TIDs could be linked to Es and polarised electric fields in 2 of these events. The other quiet time events could not be related to Es instability and polarised electric field either because their exact propagation direction could not be determined or data quality from the Es region scatter was too poor to perform spectral analysis. A biography on inkosi Albert John Mvumbi Luthuli as an African intellectual
[Excerpt taken from Introduction] The purpose of this study is to take a look at one of these African leaders, inkosi Albert Luthuli through a biographical lens to assess whether he should be recognised as an African intellectual. Sifiso Mxolisi Ndlovu states that inkosi Luthuli is recognised as the father of South Africa’s non-racialism. He used his moral authority in a historic fashion to influence the liberation movement to adopt non-violent resistance. During his time as President-General, he became the beacon of non-violent resistance. As the president of the liberation organisation, he delivered speeches that steered the African National Congress (ANC) and the liberation movement when the State escalated its oppression against Africans. The State retaliated by deposing him as an elected Chief, imprisoned him, imposed multiple bans on him in attempts to silence him. His intellect proved to be a threat to the State. He spoke out boldly against the apartheid state and advocated for chiefs, African people, African women, sugar farmers, and all oppressed racial groups. Inkosi Luthuli used his speeches to deliver political concepts like non-racialism, multiracialism, African nationalism and democracy into the public space. He cemented ANC’s cooperation policy that created the environment for the existence of the Congress Alliance that produced the Freedom Charter. He spoke out against the oppression of not just South Africans but Africa and all oppressed groups internationally. He illustrated that he possessed geopolitics that would gain the attention of the world. He illustrated his geopolitics through his internationalism philosophy gained the international community’s attention. Inkosi Luthuli was revered and respected by his Groutville community, the African community, South Africans of all racial groups and the international community. His impact can be seen through him being the first African-born Nobel Peace Prize recipient. He pushed for the international community to place economic sanctions and believed that international sanctions were the appropriate non-violent method the global community could get involved in fighting apartheid.5 The purpose of this study will be to explore how a Christian Zulu Chief’s intellectual thinking was able to move South Africa towards a multiracial democracy using non-violent resistance as a strategy to gain Africa and the world’s attention—looking at him from the vantage point of being an African intellectual.Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, History, 202
