    Assessing land degradation and the effectiveness of calcrete bontveld rehabilitation in a grassridge PPC cement mining area using multi-sensor remotely sensed data and machine learning techniques

    This study uses multi-temporal remote sensing data to spatially visualise and quantify land degradation due to mining as well as Calcrete Bontveld rehabilitation at the Grassridge PPC Cement mine, Gqeberha formerly known as Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Botanical field data is also used to verify the suasses of rehabilitation in the area. SPOT-6 and Landsat multi-spectral images were compared, and Support Vector Machine and Random Forest algorithms were used for classification in order to determine which yields more accurate results for a limestone mine. Support Vector Machine analysis using SPOT-6 images yielded the best results. This was due to the high spatial resolution of SPOT-6 compared to Landsat and Support Vector Machine classifier was able to classify images with fewer training points compared to Random Forest. The spatio-temporal land cover change at the mine was then determined between the years 2000, 2015 and 2020. Land cover classification is useful for monitoring land degradation and, in this case, was able to show the extent of rehabilitation success. For the year 2020, a 17% area was rehabilitated; however, the algorithm could not distinguish between unmined Calcrete Bontveld matrix and rehabilitation sites that were older than five years. The performed change detection also showed that 29.50% of unmined Calcrete Bontveld matrix had changed to “mature rehabilitation” (rehabilitation sites older than five years). Again, for this percentage in some areas the algorithm could not distinguish between the unmined Calcrete Bontveld matrix and rehabilitation sites that were older than five years due to high similarities between the two land cover types. Area changes of the different land cover classes could also be used to demonstrate how rehabilitation areas have matured over time and lead to the conclusion that most of the Calcrete Bontveld which was mined, has over the years been successfully rehabilitated. Vegetation analysis was conducted to further validate the rehabilitation success of Calcrete Bontveld matrix. Multivariant Detrended Correspondent Analysis showed that rehabilitation sites which were younger than five years (2–year-old rehabilitation plots that were sampled) had great dissimilarity to the natural unmined Calcrete Bontveld matrix and that rehabilitation sites older than five years, in this case 16–years older, had high similarity and resemblance to natural unmined Calcrete Bontveld matrix and therefore could be considered as being mature. This was a more definitive assessment as it considers all aspects of the vegetation. Species cover and species richness also showed that Calcrete Bontveld matrix rehabilitation sites which have been rehabilitated for more than 5 years had greater similarity to natural unmined vegetation compared to areas that have been rehabilitated for less than five years. This study, therefore, demonstrates that due to the high similarity between mature rehabilitation sites and unmined Calcrete Bontveld, rehabilitation has been successful.Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, School of Environmental Sciences, 202

    An exploration of stakeholder perceptions of the quality of teaching and learning in higher education

    Quality in higher education is a complex and evolving concept that has been a subject of measurement, assurance and promotion in universities globally for the past three decades. However, its precise definition remains elusive due to its fluid nature, influenced by various contextual factors and stakeholder perspectives. This study explored the concepts of quality teaching and quality learning within the specific context of Nelson Mandela University, focusing on two critical internal stakeholder groups, lecturers and students. By maintaining a constant context, the study sought to gain a deeper understanding of how these stakeholders perceived and contributed to the overall quality of education at the institution. Defining quality in higher education (HE) is important, as it directly impacts on the evaluation processes within educational institutions. Presently, most Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) assess quality using tangible inputs and outputs, resulting in a quantifiable representation of quality. Despite this approach, realistically, the anticipated improvements in the quality of teaching and learning are not apparent, leading to concerns about graduate readiness for the demands of the workforce. This situation raises imperative questions about the quality of teaching and learning within HEIs, necessitating a response to address this issue. This study used the conceptual model Schindler et al. (2015) developed to investigate stakeholder perceptions of quality teaching and quality learning in higher education (HE). The research followed a novel perspective by uncoupling quality in HE from the prevailing neoliberal approach and considering quality in HE within social inclusion interventions (Gidley et al., 2010a) already in place in HE settings. The research methodology expanded on social inclusion theory and employed a qualitative, participative and visual approach adapted from Mmogo-method®, an indigenous method. The research design fostered active participation from the participants, who assumed the role of co-researchers.     Dietary assessment of Cape Gannets (Morus capensis) and African Penguins (Spheniscus demersus) in Algoa Bay using molecular scatology

    Seabirds are important marine sentinels, providing valuable information about ecosystem health and condition. Dietary studies of seabirds can inform on ecosystem functioning through identifying the condition and changes occurring in their surrounding environment. Dietary studies are also crucial as they can identify threats that seabirds face. Until recently, the diets of southern African endemic and Endangered Cape Gannets Morus capensis and African Penguins Spheniscus demersus were solely investigated through stomach content analyses, which allows for the identification and quantification of prey remains. To overcome some of the limitations associated with stomach content analysis, stable isotope and fatty acid analyses were proposed. However, these methods still require bird handling and thus impose some stress on the birds. DNA metabarcoding of faecal matter shows promise as a completely noninvasive method for seabird dietary studies. This thesis first examined whether DNA metabarcoding could be used to determine the diet of Cape Gannet and African Penguin breeding in Algoa Bay, South Africa. Then, this method was used to investigate the influence of intrinsic (both seabird species) and extrinsic (African Penguins) factors on the diet of the two seabird species. For the first data chapter, stomach content samples and faecal matter were collected concurrently from breeding Cape Gannets and African Penguins on Bird Island. DNA was successfully extracted from most faecal matter samples and the primers (18S_SSU, 16S_Fish) used for group, taxa and fish prey identification allowed amplification of prey DNA for both study species. A similar piscivorous diet was determined by both dietary methods for Cape Gannets with Sardine Sardinops sagax and Atlantic Saury Scomberesox saurus dominating the diet. Sardine also dominated the African Penguin diet in both dietary methods. In addition, DNA metabarcoding in African Penguins revealed a more diverse diet compared to the one determined by stomach content analysis. This was likely due to the limitations on the allowed number of stomach content samples to be collected for that Endangered species. Non-invasive DNA metabarcoding of faecal matter was then used to investigate whether the diet varied with breeding stages (incubation, chick-rearing) and age classes (chick-rearing adults, chicks) in both seabird species, but also breeding colonies (Algoa Bay: Bird Island, St Croix Island) in African Penguins. DNA metabarcoding revealed that breeding stages influenced the diet of Cape Gannets and African Penguins on Bird Island where prey species diversity was greater for incubating adults. On the contrary, the diet of incubating and chick-rearing penguins on St Croix Island was similar. When comparing the diet of African Penguins between Bird Island and St Croix Island, there was an increased overlap in diet composition between incubating and chick-rearing adults on St Croix Island when compared to Bird Island. Importantly, DNA metabarcoding indicated an increase in fishery interactions in Algoa Bay, particularly for Cape Gannets and the hake Merluccius spp. fishery, where the contribution of hake to chick-rearing adults and chick diet was considerably greater than incubating adult diet. In this study, I showed that DNA metabarcoding of faecal matter provides an opportunity for non-invasive dietary studies in two southern African endemic and Endangered seabird species. Incorporating non-invasive methods as a complement to other dietary methods for monitoring seabird trophic ecology is crucial when considering the worsening status of several seabird species.Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, School of Environmental Sciences, 202

    An empirical analysis of the interplay among bank competition, bank stability and regulation: a case study of banks in Zimbabwe

    This study empirically examined the interconnection among bank competition, regulation and stability of eighteen Zimbabwean banks during the period 2011-2017. Zscore, Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAD), and Loans market share and Deposits market share which are proxies for stability, regulation and competition respectively were examined firstly using the Panel Vector Autoregressive (PVAR) model. Model 1 used loans market share as a proxy for competition and model 2 used deposits market share instead. The stability test using Eigenvalue Stability Condition showed that the PVAR model is unstable. Secondly, the above variables and five bank specific variables (i.e., credit risk, management efficiency, liquidity, return on assets and bank size) were estimated using the Feasible Generalised Least Squares (FGLS) model. The study documents that competition positively contributed to stability and regulation negatively influenced the stability of the Zimbabwean banks. Meanwhile, bank size and credit risk have a negative relationship with stability; management efficiency and liquidity have a positive relationship. Return On Assets has a negative and positive relationship with stability in model 1 and model 2, respectively. The findings implied that to enhance stability, banks must experience a competitive environment, reasonably low minimum capital requirements and cautiously designed regulatory frameworks.Thesis (MCom) -- Faculty of Commerce, Economics and Economic History, 202

    Spatial analysis of littoral and demersal fish assemblages within the Knysna Estuary system

    The Knysna Estuary is a unique system as it is the only “estuarine bay” system in the warm-temperate region of South Africa and is the largest estuary system on the southern coastline of South Africa. The Knysna Estuary has been identified as the estuary with the highest conversation priority in South Africa. The volume of research undertaken on the Knysna Estuary has led to it being rated “excellent” in terms of research productivity. However, despite this, surprisingly little work has been undertaken and published around the dynamics of fish assemblages occurring in the system, with little to no research assessing the demersal fish assemblage. The last widespread fish sampling effort that has been published was conducted in 1994, highlighting the need for an updated fish assessment with a focused sampling effort targeting both the littoral and demersal fish populations. The identification of key habitats for estuarine fish assemblages is essential for addressing estuarine conservation needs. Despite the importance of spatial data in addressing conservation planning, few estuarine studies have used spatial analyses in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to identify conservation priority areas. Such information is critical for effective estuarine management plans. The aim of this project was to identify juvenile fish density hotspots to inform future systematic conservation planning. This study made use of two methods of sampling, seine netting to target the littoral fish assemblage and beam trawling to target demersal fish species. Two dedicated sampling trips for each sampling method were undertaken in June 2021 and March 2022 for Seine net sampling and November 2021 and March 2022 for Beam trawl sampling. Fish were identified to species level, measured (mm TL) and categorised into life history stages (i.e. settlement stage, juvenile and adult) and thereafter assigned into their various estuarine association guilds. A total of 47 species were recorded, with 42 species were caught in the seine net sampling and 24 species in the beam trawl sampling. The results from this study showed the vast extent of marine dominance in the Knysna Estuary, with marine estuarine-opportunist (MEO) species dominating catches (richness) from both sampling methods. The spatial analysis highlighted the importance of the lower “marine bay” region of the system, with the majority of estuarine guilds showing a high abundance in this region. Key fishery species and dominant fish species were identified during this study, the dominant species during the sampling effort were identified as ecologically important fish species and were dominated by adult specimens. The key fishery species sampled during this study were dominated by juvenile specimens. This highlights the role of the Knysna Estuary as a nursery area for juvenile fishery species and the contribution of the estuary to the estuarine and adjacent coastal fisheries. Key hotspots were identified for fishery species, these being the “Ashmead Channel” in the marine bay region and the “Belvidere” section of the lagoon region. Ashmead channel is sheltered backwater area while the Belvidere section is some distance from the main river channel, reducing the anthropogenic impact on these areas. The low anthropogenic utilization of these areas along with weaker water current in these regions was linked to the usage of these region by key fishery species.     Stimulating continuous professional development and teacher leadership in a rural Namibian school: a participatory action research

    Namibia values democratic and quality education. One way to improve quality education is by allowing teachers autonomy and offering continuous professional development (CPD) to teachers. Historically, the CPD programmes on offer in Namibia were centralised and generic, using a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach offered as mini workshops to train teachers. In 2012, a decentralised method of school-based CPD program was initiated in schools, to give opportunities to schools to identify, plan, implement and evaluate their own professional needs. However, a recent study indicated that these initiatives have failed due to poor leadership, a lack of training and support as well as limited knowledge of principals in running CPD initiatives. Against this backdrop, my study aimed at engaging in a participatory action research process with teachers and SMT members in a rural combined school in the Kavango West region to stimulate the failed school-based CPD program and develop teacher leadership. My study therefore aligned with the international recommendations that school-based CPD be built around the notions of distributed leadership and teacher leadership (Smulyan, 2016; Hunzicker, 2018). The three-step model of change and action research developed by Kurt Lewin served as the underpinning theory for this study. The study was situated within a critical paradigm and driven by the question: “Does the involvement in participatory action research process stimulate a school-based CPD programme and develop teacher leadership?” The study involved two phases. The contextual profiling stage generated data through the analysis of documents, focus group interviews, and observation. Phase 2 engaged the participant in participatory action research to stimulate school-based CPD and develop teacher leadership. Thematic analysis supported by both inductive and deductive methods was used to analyse the data. The findings from phase one indicated that CPD was interpreted differently by the participants and confirmed that there was no CPD program in the school. Using Grant's (2017) model of teacher leadership, the findings further revealed that although teacher leadership was practised in all four zones, it was strongest in the classroom and initiated through delegated practices. Using Angelle and Dehart (2010), constraining forces included negative teachers’ attitudes, limited knowledge, skills, and confidence as well as a school culture of distrust. Phase 2 revealed that participatory action research can be a useful stimulus for school-based CPD. A tangible output from the PAR sessions was a template for the internal policy for school-based continuous teacher development. In addition, the findings from the sessions indicated the significance of supportive leadership to ensure the efficacy of school-based CPD and teacher leadership.Thesis (MEd) -- Faculty of Education, Primary and Early Childhood Education, 202

    Quantifying feed intake and feeding intensity using two experimental conditions and the effect of different feeding strategies on the production parameters of farmed South African abalone, haliotis midae

    As abalone are slow-growing animals there is a high investment of capital, running costs and labour in commercial abalone farming. Revenue needs to be maximised by achieving fast growth rates. A foremost driver of abalone growth is feed intake and feeding intensity of the abalone as well as the feeding regimen a farm utilises. While feed intake is well-documented in H. midae, there is a paucity of information regarding this aspect in abalone above 70 g and the relationship between feeding intensity, feed conversion rate (FCR) and daily growth rate needs to be documented. Similarly, there are a limited number of studies dealing with the effects of different pellet types of the same formulation, that differ only in shape and size, on feed intake and production in H. midae. This study made use of both a controlled laboratory experiment and commercial-scale farm experiment with the aim of testing whether feed intake information produced under laboratory conditions can provide good estimates of feed intake under farming conditions, which can further be implemented into feeding strategies on abalone farms. This study quantified daily feed intake (F) in 10 – 20 g, 100 – 110 g and 150 – 160 g abalone weight classes using two different pellet types and determined the relationship between the duration of feed availability and feed intake under laboratory conditions. The effect of three different pellet type strategies (fed daily: a leaf-only strategy = L d-1, a short-pellet only strategy = SP d-1, and a strategy that used both = B d-1) on abalone production parameters under farming conditions such as growth rate, feed conversion ratio (FCR), feeding intensity (FI) and weight variation of 30 – 40 g H. midae was also investigated. A commercial-scale farm study was designed to test the effect of four commercially relevant feeding regimens (three size-specific regimens and one commercially practiced feeding method) on the growth, FCR, feeding intensity and weight variation of these three abalone weight classes while taking into account an economic model to assess the profitability of each feeding regimen. Daily feed intake as a percentage of body mass (% BM d-1) was a function of abalone weight class between the 10 – 20 g and two larger weight classes 100 – 110 g and 150 – 160 g p < 0.0001), however feed intake was not different between the 100 – 110 g and 150 – 160 g weight classes. Pellet type did not affect feed intake in all abalone weight classes (p = 0.15). Feed intake (F) was positively linearly correlated with duration of feed availability (h) in the 10 – 20 g weight class (r2 = 0.76, p <0.00001) and logarithmically correlated in the 100 – 110 g (r2 = 0.25, p < 0.02) and 150 – 160 g (r2 = 0.52, p < 0.0001) weight classes (10 – 20 g abalone-1: 3 F (% BM) = 0.02(h) + 0.1976, 100 – 110 g abalone-1: F (% BM) = log10(h)*0.17 + 0.17, 150 – 160 g abalone-1: F (% BM) = log10(h)*0.36 + 0.07). There was no significant difference in monthly average abalone weight, daily growth rate (G), FCR and feeding intensity between each pellet type strategy (G: p = 0.60, FCR: p = 0.62, FI: p = 0.54 ). However, abalone grew well over the 112-day growth period with average abalone weight increasing significantly between each monthly sample time (pooled pellet type strategy: Huynh-Feldt correction; p < 0.00001). Furthermore, abalone fed the leaf-only pellet type strategy (L d-1) fell into higher weight classes after a 112-day growth period (Z test: 50 – 70 g: 72%) which was 16.1 % higher compared to the SP d-1 and B d-1 strategies. Daily growth rate (r2 = 0.34, p < 0.01) and FCR (r2 = 0.42, p < 0.004) was negatively correlated and FCR was positively correlated with daily feeding intensity, respectively (G = - 2.59 (FI) + 1.526, FCR = 8.8082 (FI) – 2.7108). Feeding regimen affected the production parameters of three abalone weight classes. The method practiced on the farm resulted in the best growth in the 10 – 20 g abalone weight class. The farm feeding method resulted in slower yet more efficient growth rates (lowest FCR values) in the abalone weight classes, 100 – 110 g and 150 – 160 g abalone- 1. However, size-specific feeding regimens resulted in the fastest growth rates but resulted in higher FCR values (less efficient). The relationship between feeding intensity, daily growth rate and FCR all showed that an increase in feeding intensity results in increased daily growth rates and FCR values. The economic model suggests that the higher FCR values associated with size-specific regimens, which have higher associated costs to producing abalone, were greatly outweighed by the growth attained by the abalone in the 100 – 110 g and 150 – 160 g weight classes. The size-specific regimens generated a higher potential monetary value of abalone after a 112-day period, which would consequently result in higher income for abalone farms. For abalone ranging from 100 – 110 and 150 – 160 grams, the economic model suggested that in a quarterly grading schedule (112 days) that abalone be fed the size specific daily rations, which is a function of body mass, at 0.35 % BM d-1 and 0.352 % BM d-1, respectively. The two experimental conditions used in this study produced feed intake and production parameter information that is beneficial to South African abalone farmers. The small-scale laboratory study produced information on feed intake that can be used as reference values as to what abalone in these weight classes can consume on a daily basis. The laboratory study can provide estimates of feed intake under farming conditions but should only be used as minimum 4 values when determining size-specific feeding regimens. To maximise abalone growth, farmers should utilise size-specific feeding regimens for abalone above 30 g. Daily growth rate and FCR can be predicted as a function of the abalone’s feeding intensity. Further studies are needed to determine the effects of abalone weight class on production parameters when testing different pellet types as well as an exploration into behavioural studies focusing on diet preferences. Additionally, future studies need to take into consideration abalone above the weight of 100 g with additional focus of research on behavioural, genetic and environmental aspects on abalone feed intake.Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Ichthyology and Fisheries Science, 202

    The influence of leadership on service delivery in the department of employment and labour, Eastern Cape

    The aim of the public sector is to deliver effective and efficient services whilst reducing these delivery costs (Price Waterhouse Coopers, 2007). In addressing this aim of public service delivery, the objective of the study was to investigate the impact of leadership on service delivery in a specific public sector. The researcher utilised a non-experimental correlation research design where the participants were entry level officials from region six within the National Department of Employment and Labour in the Eastern Cape, who reported to the first level of management (supervisors/team leaders). A probability sampling design with a cluster sampling method was used, wherein the population was grouped and a cluster was chosen. The sample consisted of officials who delivered services to the public at an entry administrative level either in a direct role or a supporting role. These officials reported to the first line of leadership in the hierarchy (supervisors/team leaders). Questionnaires were used as the primary source of data collection to solicit data from participants and obtain feedback on leadership behaviour on operational and service delivery issues in the workplace. The data was processed by statistical calculations of the mean, median, mode and standard deviation. The Cronbach Alpha as a test of internal validity, was used to test for reliability and validity. The findings of the study revealed that the department strived to improve leadership and service delivery in rendering public service which will naturally contribute to the 2030 vision of the National Development Plan and the fulfilment of the organisational mandate (South Africa National Planning Commission, 2012).Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Faculty of Business and Economic Sciences, 202
