    Microbial Diversity of Human-Cultivated and Wild Soil on Longwood University\u27s Campus

    Soil pH is one of the biggest determinants for microbial diversity and composition. Many human interventions in soil chemistry involve processes that alter the pH. On Longwood University\u27s campus, some regions are cultivated under a nutrient management plan. In this study, the microbial diversity of these human-cultivated regions was compared to that of wild regions. In general, it was found that the diversity of human-cultivated regions was higher than that of wild regions

    The risk assessment process involves identifying and characterizing hazards, determining dose-response relationships, and assessing possible exposures to toxins in order to inform risk management. The goal of this project was to complete the steps of a risk assessment and develop a perspective on risk management. Data collected from publicly available databases, scholarly articles, and targeted sources were used to perform a risk assessment for vaping. Social, economic, political, and/or legal perspectives were considered when determining the best risk management approaches

    The Correlation Between Heart Rate and Level of Exercise in Women

    Students at Longwood University tested the hypothesis that the heart rate of women determines the level of exercise in women. Every subject filled out a pre-study survey which gathered information regarding their status of exercise levels, caffeine intake, and health backgrounds which can factor levels of heart rate. The initial heart rate was taken with each subject and then was taken again after walking for two minutes on a treadmill at an incline. Data was collected to analyze a correlation of the time duration of the subject\u27s heart rate to decrease going back to the resting rate after walking and the level of exercise

    Longevity and Aging Mediated by FOXO and the Gene Methuselah

    Forkhead box (FOXO) transcription factors have been shown to influence longevity and ageing in various species. FOXO has shown to be involved in the regulation of cancer through the ageing process. The gene methuselah in Drosophila melanogaster is involved in longevity due to its connection to FOXO transcription factors. This study aims to discover the effects of FOXO on the gene methuselah through gene knockout. D. melanogaster cells were infused with FOXO transcription factors to alter the DNA strand. The methuselah gene within this DNA was knocked out by inhibition of the FOXO transcription factors. Knockout of this gene should negatively affect the longevity of the organism. This is due to methuselah\u27s role in increased longevity when FOXO is present. Discovering the effects of gene knockout with FOXO can increase longevity in various species

    Scanning electron microscopic analysis of developmental speed\u27s effect on symmetry in Drosophila melanogaster

    The purpose of this project is primarily to examine the effects of development speed on symmetry in Drosophila melanogaster when employing methylparaben, an anti-microbial preservative, as an additive to the organisms\u27 growth medium. This paraben was selected due to its studied effects on prolonging the length of juvenile development. The research question being examined in this project is whether manipulating developmental speed by lengthening the average developmental cycle would lead to more overall symmetry as opposed to a shorter developmental cycle speed. Baseline assays of juvenile developmental speed of Drosophila melanogaster, both groups with and without methylparaben growth medium, will be established via the addition of cameras to the incubator in which they will be stored while developing, allowing for key developmental timelines to be tracked and logged. Both the control group without methylparaben growth medium and the experimental group with methylparaben-infused growth medium will be raised under identical growth conditions (i.e., temperature, humidity, diet, etc.), minus the experimental factor. The physical effects and results of both groups\u27 body symmetry will be examined and analyzed via the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM)

    An investigation into the use of textual references to sunshine and fresh air in farm holiday advertising

    Purpose Using the context of a farm holiday venue, the purpose of this study is to empirically test whether textual references can have significant influences on potential consumers\u27 affective responses and interest in advertisements. Design/methodology/approach In a between-subjects experiment, a reference to sunshine (the underlined phrase in the following narrative) was inserted into a Facebook advertisement for a farm holiday venue: “Relax and Rejuvenate for a couple of days on our farm. Great food, fun, and sunshine … See More”. Findings Results indicate that a reference to sunshine significantly improves consumers\u27 affective responses to the advertisement and significantly increases their interest (propensity to click “see more”). This study also examines the potential influence of a textual reference to fresh air as well as fresh air in combination with sunshine. No statistically significant results are found with the fresh air reference. Originality/value While a number of studies have examined text-based sensory details in marketing stimuli (Magnini and Gaskins, 2010; Torto, 2016), the notion of inserting textual references to fresh air and/or sunshine in advertising has not been empirically examined in the body of the existing literature
