Staggering stink bugs: autotomy affects stability and locomotor performance in Halymorpha halys
Autotomy, the voluntary loss of a limb, is a common predator evasion strategy in arthropods. Considerable research on autotomy has focused on arachnids, which have developed morphological compensations to manage the stability challenges posed by limb loss, as explained by the extra leg hypothesis. However, studies in insects are unclear about such a mechanism. In hexapods, a tripod gait means that losing any one limb disrupts one of the tripod stances. It is not fully understood how insects compensate for the resulting loss of stability and potential performance effects. We hypothesize that insects exhibit neural plasticity, allowing them to adjust their gait patterns to enhance stability, improve performance, and mitigate the fitness costs of autotomy. To test this, we analyzed the gait patterns of adult brown marmorated Halymorpha (Halyomorpha halys) before and after autotomy. We recorded gait trials on a flat, plexiglass surface using high-speed cameras and tracked antennae, body, and legs with the software DeepLabCut. Detailed 3D reconstructions were then performed using the software Anipose. Prior to autotomy, insects walked in stable configurations. Autotomy had limited impact on most measures of locomotor performance, except for velocity which was significantly decreased. Gait modifications including limping, using remaining limbs as a cane , galloping, and use of more legs in stance were observed. We found evidence for both, reflexive change and plasticity
Multigenerational Consequences of Environment and Loss on Maternal Behavior, Anxiety, Boldness, and Memory in Rats
Maternal behavior has long been studied for the implications it presents for offspring outcomes. In the present study, we examined the interplay between the positive effects of environmental enrichment and the negative consequences of loss – defined as a 50% litter cull – on both mothers and their offspring. In this multigenerational study, maternal Sprague Dawley rats were separated into one of four of the following conditions: enriched/control, enriched/loss, standard/control, and standard/loss. Maternal rats (P generation) were assessed using the following behavioral assays: Elevated Plus Maze (EPM) for anxiety-like behavior and boldness, Object Location Maze (OLM) for spatial memory, and Novel Object Preference test (NOP) for non-spatial memory. Analysis for these measures indicated mixed findings related to cognitive and behavioral outcomes. The study was repeated for the F1 generation; findings from these behavioral parameters provide insight into the multigenerational effects of positive attributes of life and negative life events on cognition and behavior, specifically memory, anxiety, and boldness

A balancing act between accuracy and timeliness: Evidence from analyst forecasts in China
This paper investigates the impact of teamwork on analysts\u27 ability to balance accuracy and timeliness. Surprisingly, team analysts demonstrate a lower ability compared to individual analysts. This trade-off ability is even worse in diverse teams. Further, we find that Confucianism negatively affects this ability. However, this ability significantly improves when star analysts serve on the analyst team, or when analyst team members come from the province where the covered firm is headquartered, or when analyst team members graduate from the same college. Overall, these findings suggest that it is crucial to consider the two performance dimensions simultaneously
Consumer Acceptance of Biometric Credit Cards as an Identify Proofing Mechanism
Biometric credit cards have entered the marketplace as an enhancement to the chip card technology for authenticating consumers when making a purchase at a credit card terminal. Consumers using a physical credit card have the capability to provide authentication using a pre-registered fingerprint stored on the card that is compared with the fingerprint used at the time of purchase. The success of the biometric advancement will be impacted by marketplace user acceptance. Cyber vulnerabilities on biometrics through similarity-based attacks and other methods are explored in relation to the impact on consumers’ data privacy. After making purchases with a test product of a biometric credit card, consumer attitudes and reactions were measured using a survey instrument to determine the acceptance of biometric credit cards in the marketplace. The results of the research indicated that overall, consumers find the biometric credit card to add to the financial security of physical credit card transactions and are not a privacy concern. This research provides a quantitative analysis of user attitudes towards fraud, reaction to biometric credit cards, and predictive analysis of consumer acceptance of biometric cards for identity proofing
The Investigation of the Antimicrobial and Biofilm-Disrupting Properties of Synthesized Hemibastadin Derivatives.
This thesis explores the synthesis of a polyphenolic hemibastadin-1 derivative with presumed antimicrobial properties and improved biological safety. Structural modifications included replacing aromatic bromine atoms with phenolic groups and substituting the oxime linker group on the core structure for a triazole. A divergent synthetic strategy was designed with the dimeric nature of these targeted molecules in mind. Although this stepwise synthesis is not complete, the core triazole derivative was prepared with a respectable overall yield of 47% from the methyl gallate starting material. The final steps of the synthesis will require coupling of the divergent intermediates and deprotection of this benzylated dimer. Access to the polyphenolic hemibastadin-1 derivative will allow us to investigate its antimicrobial and biofilm-disrupting properties. We also intend to further derivatize this target compound and investigate how its structural modifications affect its antimicrobial properties
