A Rhetorical Appeals Analysis of \u27Come From Away\u27: An Original Broadway Musical based on the True Stories of the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks
My analysis utilizes the three classical appeals (ethos, logos, and pathos) to examine the rhetorical situation of the Original Broadway Musical, “Come From Away.†Taking place in Gander, Newfoundland, this musical strives to inform the audience about the story of the 9/11 terrorist attacks through a unique perspective. My analysis suggests that the writers of the musical, Sankoff and Hein, successfully implemented all three of the classical appeals to clearly illustrate not only the direct effects of the 9/11 attacks, but also the complications those people faced days and weeks following the initial attacks. Pathos was the primary appeal utilized in portraying those who were separated from their families because of the 9/11 attacks. The musical also did an effective job with showcasing the kind of compassion that can flourish in a community, providing the needed support for one another in times of adversity
Youth Sports Specialization and the Youth athlete
The purpose of our video presentation is to inform our audience, youth athletes about the negative effects of early specialization in a sport. These negative effects can be mental, physical, and emotional. Our video will target specifically the youth athletes aged six to fifteen. We will educate them with a mixture of audio and visual components to provide an informative and engaging learning environment. Our intended goal of this video is at the conclusion the youth athletes will have a better knowledge of the potential risks of early youth sports specialization
Chemistry meets art: Instrumental analysis at the LCVA
This project is an ongoing collaboration between the Longwood chemistry program and the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts. The demonstration shows the capabilities of the X-ray fluorescence spectrophotometer as a non-destructive elemental analysis technique. Our class visited the LCVA to analyze several pieces in their art collections. We were able to utilize the XRF instrument to analyze the elemental composition of glass and metal, painted pottery and porcelain, oil paintings, and metals. This project lays the groundwork for further research using X-ray fluorescence for non-destructive chemical analysis

Strokes are a lot more common in the U.S. than many may think. Every 40 seconds in the U.S. someone suffers from a stroke, and every 4 minutes someone in the U.S. dies from a stroke. A few risk factors for example are smoking, excessive alcohol use, and family history. Some may not know what to look out for when it comes to suffering from a stroke. Some signs and symptoms to look out for are headache, trouble walking, numbness in the face, trouble seeing, and difficulty involving speech. Microplastics in Urban Stormwater Ponds
Microplastics are pieces of plastic that have been broken down into extremely small particles. If introduced into the aquatic environment microplastics can impose adverse effects on aquatic wildlife, especially if they are ingested. The purpose of this study is to analyze the concentrations of microplastics in the waters of local stormwater ponds and compare them to a natural pond. Three ponds in the Farmville area were tested: two stormwater ponds on Longwood University\u27s campus and one natural pond with limited human influence at an off campus location. Water samples were taken weekly over a five week period and then analyzed to determine the concentration of microplastics in each sample. These samples were to then be compared to a sample of James River water. The water from the James river is hypothesized to contain a higher concentration of microplastics than the local Farmville ponds due to the uncreased build environment near the James River

God\u27s Own Country, directed by Francis Lee, stars Josh O\u27 Connor as Johnny Saxby, a gay Yorkshire farmer, and Alec Secăreanu as Gheorghe Ionescu, a Romanian migrant. The film immediately establishes Saxby as frustrated with the incredible responsibilities of the farm now on his shoulders because of his father\u27s sudden medical issues. The story follows Johnny’s journey, supported by Gheorghe, who teaches him acceptance, tenderness, and vulnerability. This presentation will evaluate the physicality of the characters, as well as different settings and props, as their relationship develops. Examining the intersectional identities within this film will compel the audience to question gender and sexuality stereotypes, relationships, and understand the consequences of such assumptions.**This project contains sexual content as well as queer and ethnic slurs.*

This presentation will focus on the music video Fight Like a Girl by Zolita. Written the day after Donald Trump became president of the United States, this song discusses how necessary it is for the women in our country to stand up for our own rights. The music video features a variety of women, from businesswomen to pole dancers, from Muslim women to transgender women. In this presentation I will discuss how the music video for Fight Like a Girl emphasizes the fact that all women are equally deserving of rights and respect, and we all must stand together if we hope for change
Risk Assessment of Yellow Pine Mining Area
The risk assessment process involves identifying and characterizing hazards, determining dose-response relationships, and assessing possible exposures to toxins in order to inform risk management. The goal of this project was to complete the steps of a risk assessment and develop a perspective on risk management. Data collected from publicly available databases, scholarly articles, and targeted sources were used to perform a risk assessment for Yellow Pine Mining Area. Social, economic, political, and/or legal perspectives were considered when determining the best risk management approaches
