I SPI with My WGS Eye: A Salmonella Outbreak
Get PDFSalmonella is the leading microbial source of foodborne illnesses, making it an important organism for public health studies. By examining trends between Salmonella cases through whole genome sequencing (WGS) and genomic analysis of Salmonella pathogenicity, the occurrences of outbreaks can be prevented. The genetic differences between Salmonella bacteria isolated from the environment and those isolated from clinical cases were investigated by identifying Salmonella Pathogenicity Islands (SPI). Salmonella Pathogenicity Islands are genetic systems which encode the pathogenic mechanisms for interactions with the host. Given that SPIs provide a wide range of possible methods for host-pathogen interactions, there will be a difference in the presence and type of SPIs between environmental and clinical isolates. The National Center for Biotechnology Information database was used to collect data and information on the Salmonella samples. DNA sequence analysis was performed using the Galaxy software package, and the SPIFinder system identified any SPIs present. We report the frequency of SPIs in both environmental and clinical sources of Salmonella bacteria

Patients on the non-ICU floor receive monitoring using standard devices. These devices only monitor vital signs periodically and do not provide continuous monitoring of the patient. Continuous vital sign monitoring outside of the ICU setting can benefit the patient and improve patient outcomes. It is cost-effective and can provide positive outcomes during rapid response situations (Downey et al., 2018)

The purpose of this proposal is to provide the English and Modern Languages Department the information necessary to assess the benefits to the Prince Edward County Elementary School with implementing a new reading program. As well, our program will open an opportunity to give current Longwood students more opportunity to get service hour credit along with real world tutoring experience for majors in particular studies such as English and Education. The benefits for having a reading tutoring program are to help raise the literacy and comprehension rates of the students in Prince Edward Elementary School. This proposed program gives the chance of elementary students getting tutored by Longwood college students in their school setting. The proposed program will have a designated faculty advisor to oversee all the details, while the full tutoring program will be student led

This requires the young athlete to commit at least 8 months a year to that sport as well as significant financial commitments. This specialization can affect the overall well-being of the athlete in positive and negative ways. The purpose of this video will be to talk about how specialization at a young age can affect a child. We are going to also focus on the parents and the effects that parents can have on a child\u27s sport experience. We will go into further detail by discussing topics such as financial obligations, the effects specialization has on mental health, and the effects of negative parenting during games or practices. We will include audio and visuals within our educational video that relate to the topics we will be discussing

The Effects of Academic Support at Longwood
Get PDFIf the academic support needs of students are not being met, how can we expect them to succeed? More and more often, college students are withdrawing from classes, changing majors, transferring or even dropping out of school and this is largely due to lack of academic resources or simply the lack of awareness that these resources exist. Based on personal testimonies and survey data collected from students at Longwood, this issue is a campus-wide issue. Our goal is to make students more aware of the academic support resources on college so drop-out rates and to see that the number of students on academic probation are reduced. Longwood University could be a beacon of successful students if we find ways to better educate the student body on the resources that are available to them. Based on this, as a group, we collected data from the student population on their knowledge of the academic support programs that are already in place. From this it was discovered that in general students were using only two systems because they had been required in their classes, and in other cases did not realize other more specific programs existed on campus. With this information we developed a intervention plan to help these programs get more attention and general understanding within the student population
