    Determination of Nitrate in Aqueous Media

    The objective of the study was to determine the amounts of inorganic nitrate ions in aqueous media is important in the food industry and environmentally. In the environment high levels of ions like nitrate, nitrite, and phosphate can lead to unhealthy conditions for aquatic species. Similarly, high levels of nitrate and nitrite can cause health issues in humans. One method for determining nitrate levels in aqueous samples involves reducing the nitrate species to nitrite via a redox reaction with finely divided zinc powder followed by conversion to a diazonium salt and complexation with 1-napthylamine to form a colored complex. In the work described herein, this modified version of the Griess reaction was used to spectrophotometrically determine the nitrate concentration in several environmental and food samples

    Job attitudes: A meta-analytic review and an agenda for future research.

    Given the importance and popularity of employee job attitudes in academics and practice (e.g., annual engagement surveys), it is crucial to explore and summarize previous developments in the literature to identify ways to advance the field. The current review takes a systematic approach to exploring the nomological network, including investigating redundancy, of seven common job attitudes. We present a portfolio of evidence relying on three primary studies and one meta‐analytic study (total k = 6631; total n = 3 309 205). Our results raise concerns about the measurement of select job attitudes. Further, job attitudes are moderately to strongly correlated with each other (most relations landing between ρ = .50 and .69) and have similar patterns of relationships with antecedents, correlates, and outcomes. Yet, relative weights analyses illustrate that some attitudes have more validity in predicting key employee outcomes than others, which points to theoretically relevant utility concerns among specific job attitudes. This review offers a contribution by synthesizing the literature and developing a future research agenda based on the current findings that will advance the field further. Finally, this work offers a primer on job attitudes, with definitions, applicable theoretical frameworks, scales and items, and empirical relationships between key constructs.     Neighborhood Heterogeneity: Implication to the Weighted Repeat Sales Method

    Does the degree of neighborhood heterogeneity, in and of itself, contribute to the cross-sectional price variations beyond that attributable to differences in physical characteristics within the neighborhood? This study presents theoretical and empirical investigations to confirm that the degree of property heterogeneity within the neighborhood can explain a significant portion of the cross-sectional price variations. Using the MLS data in south Florida, we conduct a series of regression analyses that yield consistent and robust results indicating that (1) neighborhood heterogeneity, whether structural or demographic, exhibits significant explanatory power to the pricing variations; (2) the market volatility, in contrast, only explains a small portion of the pricing variation, which confirms the finding of Case and Shiller; and (3) market liquidity, though not a neighborhood heterogeneity measure, does have a significant and negative effect on the pricing variation, suggesting that the availability of comparable sales can reduce pricing variation. These findings can potentially lead to an improvement over the widely used Weighted Repeat Sales (WRS) method for constructing home price indices

    Strategically positioning Europe as a destination for off-highway vehicle recreationists: some initial findings

    The popularity of off-highway vehicle (OHV) recreation has increased substantially in recent decades in the USA. The purpose of this study is to address the question of whether it might be a viable tourism strategy to position European destinations for such OHV recreationists. This study conducted a national survey of OHV recreationists in the U.S. The key finding is that 68.3 percent of those who have not previously ridden in Europe either strongly agree or somewhat agree that they would like to experience OHV riding in Europe if they had the time and money. Of those who had previously ridden in Europe, 100 percent either strongly agree or somewhat agree that they would like to return to Europe for more riding. Furthermore, this study finds that those with an interest in riding in Europe record an increased importance in the quantity of trail miles / large size of the OHV attraction in comparison to those with little or no interest in riding in Europe. These preliminary findings suggest that future research is warranted to further explore whether it could be worthwhile for European destinations to actively attract this large and growing segment of recreationists

    The Effects of Impaired Water on Zebrafish Muscle Development and Startle Responses

    For over 100 years, the presence of coliform bacteria in water has been used as environmental risk indicators for the occurrence of human pathogens (Salmonella, enteric viruses, etc.). Although these measurements typically are used to protect humans from potential exposure to toxins, little has been researched about the effect on organisms that live in these waters. Our current study utilizes a long-term water monitoring program within the Appomattox River watershed of south-central Virginia, as it examines the effect of raw water containing varying bacteria levels on the first 72 hours of aquatic vertebrate development, using a zebrafish model. Water samples were obtained from a variety of freshwater collection sites both considered ‘clean’ and ‘impaired’ by the VA Department of Environmental Quality (‘impaired’ includes \u3e238 fecal coliforms/100mL across multiple samplings). Other physical parameters were similar between sample sites. By measuring the presence of fecal indicator bacteria, the relative number of pollutants can be assayed. By comparing zebrafish embryos raised in clean versus impaired water sources, the effect on muscle development and physiology was examined. qRT-PCR analysis and in situ hybridizations were performed to identify altered expression levels of genes critical for proper muscle development. Furthermore, we examined how this misexpression of muscle genes altered the swimming physiology of the young fish. One key early muscular behavior in 4-week-old fish was examined - a startle response that includes the fish making a C-shaped bend to swim away from predators (C-starts). We examined the effects of \u27impaired\u27 water on C-starts and have identified differences in muscle physiology due to the impaired waters. This experiment can ultimately be used to trace the effects of impaired water sources initially on gene expression levels within the muscles of the fish embryo, and then ultimately that effect on the physiology of muscle movement
