Philosophical Counseling and Psychological Counseling in Relation to Moral Injury: A Thought Experiment
This thesis investigates the similarities and differences between Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a psychological therapy model, and Logic-Based Therapy (LBT), a philosophical therapy model, on moral injury. ACT emphasizes the importance of language in context in addition to a framework that addresses individuals as a whole. This approach contrasts with a variety of other psychological models designed to treat specific symptoms or diagnoses. LBT helps clients recognize and overcome irrationalities in thinking and subconscious rule-following behaviors to reach a point of equilibrium and tranquility. Moral injury is the observation of or participation in the violation of one\u27s own moral beliefs; symptoms can include shame, guilt, and spiritual crisis. This paper provides an in-depth literature review and then uses a thought experiment to examine how those experiencing moral injury would receive support in both the psychological and philosophical disciplines
The Covid-19 Pandemic and the Consumer Staples Sector: A Test of Market Efficiency
On Wednesday March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the covid 19 outbreak a global pandemic (Cucinotta, 2020). How efficient is the consumer staples market reaction to the announcement of a global pandemic? The purpose of this study is to examine the risk adjusted returns on and around the pandemic announcement to test the semi-strong form market efficiency hypothesis using the standard event study methodology in the finance literature. Will returns in the consumer staples industry show larger than expected gains on and surrounding the WHO’s COVID-19 pandemic announcement? The finance literature offers little evidence supporting the link between pandemics and the stock market. The announcement of a pandemic by the WHO should significantly and quickly affect the market. According to Eugene Fama (1970), if the market is semi-strong form efficient, all public information is immediately factored into the market and no investor can use this information to achieve an above normal return when adjusted for risk. To study this relationship, data for the S&P 500 and 10 consumer staples sector firms were collected for the event period surrounding the announcement of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study tests the global pandemic announcement for semi-strong form market efficiency (Bacon &Howell 2021). Evidence here supports the expected positive signal associated with the sample of consumer staples sector firms in reaction to the announcement of the pandemic. Likewise, the study results support the semi-strong form efficient market hypothesis and suggest the possibility of trading on this information up to 15 days prior to the announcement consistent with the behavioral finance literature (Bacon & Howell 2021)
What Determines the Probability of Having an Accredited Undergraduate Business Program?
There are three primary accreditations for business with different reputations and appeals, creating potential for misconceptions. For example, are AACSB institutions large, public, or more exclusive? Are unaccredited institutions only those who are private, small, or less exclusive? In an exploratory study, we answer a central question: what variables impact the probability an undergraduate business program is accredited? Data is collected from four-year, comprehensive, nonprofit institutions in US states. Regression results suggest that the probability of AACSB accreditation is increased by being public, larger, and having a school of business. However, they dispel any potential misconceptions that only the most selective in admissions are AACSB accredited. The probability of ACBSP or IACBE accreditation increases if private and lower SATs; interestingly, size has no explanatory power. A key finding is that it is difficult to characterize those schools who are unaccredited, as public funding and exclusivity measures have no predictive powe
The Investigation of the Antimicrobial and Biofilm-Disrupting Properties of Synthesized Hemibastadin Derivatives
We want to investigate structural changes to the core hemibastadin structure while attempting to make these derivatives biologically safer. Since these modifications have never been done before, we will need to design a synthesis of these new molecules. Due to the nature of the molecules (dimers), a divergent synthesis that allows for the creation of both halves simultaneously seems most appropriate. A successful synthesis of these compounds will allow us to further investigate these derivatives for their antimicrobial and biofilm-disrupting properties
Access to Gender-Affirming Voice Services Among Emerging Adults in the Gender-Expansive Community
Emerging adulthood, occurring between the ages of 18 to 25, is a time of significant identity exploration. This age group has the highest prevalence of individuals who are transgender or nonbinary; however, there is minimal current research on access to gender-affirming voice services among this demographic. This study utilized a healthcare access framework by Levesque et al. (2013) to analyze organizational barriers to care including approachability, acceptability, availability, affordability, and appropriateness for this population.
The researchers collected data from 104 participants with an electronic survey. Survey data showed most participants (64%) are aware of and desire gender-affirming voice services. Of the participants who indicated desire for gender-affirming voice services, 93% reported that they never received services from a voice professional. Affordability, approachability, and acceptability were the most significant organizational barriers to access with affordability (68%) being the most significant. Awareness of services was a barrier to access with 46% reporting either a lack of awareness of gender-affirming voice services or a lack of awareness of these services provided by speech-language pathologists. The most used sources for information on gender-affirming voice services included friends; national, state, and local LGBTQ+ websites; LGBTQ+ community centers, and various social media outlets. This health-seeking information may be useful in providing better outreach to gender-expansive emerging adults
