The Impact of Morpheme Instruction on Literacy Skills
The purpose of this action research project was to determine what impact a four-week class-wide morphology intervention would have on students\u27 literacy. Specifically, the researcher hypothesized that teaching morphology would improve students’ morphological awareness, their ability to spell words that include the morphemes taught, their knowledge of the meaning of words that include the taught morphemes, and their accuracy in reading words that include the taught morphemes. The research was conducted by a fifth grade teacher in her tenth year of teaching. The researcher was interested in research-based practices that improve students\u27 spelling while also improving other reading skills. The fifth grade students were assessed in the four areas of literacy before and after the instruction period. The 10 minutes of daily morphology instruction included direct instruction, discussion, and activities to practice reading and spelling words with eight of the most common English morphemes including suffixes, prefixes, and root words. Data analysis revealed a statistically significant increase in participants\u27 spelling scores, morphological awareness, and reading following the four weeks of instruction. Students\u27 knowledge of word meanings did not improve. These research findings may be beneficial for elementary and middle school educators who are considering ways to help improve their students\u27 spelling while also improving their students\u27 overall understanding of the English language
Acquisition and Retention of Vocabulary Using Simplified Picture Word Inductive Model
This action research was guided by the researcher’s interest in finding ways to use picture word inductive model (PWIM) to encourage more vocabulary retention in preschool. The research was conducted using two versions of a similar PWIM poster. Group A used a simplified PWIM poster with limited items on the poster while Group B was exposed to a typical PWIM poster with more items to identify. Both groups used the words they identified in their posters for the 4-week study. Participants were monitored weekly using assessments such as visual identification and word identification to check for retention. Research was done to determine if a less stimulating poster would yield higher vocabulary identification and retention. Keywords: preschool, PWIM, vocabulary retentio
Implementing Writing Strategies in Secondary Classrooms Across Multiple Content Areas
This school improvement plan integrates different writing strategies, such as (a) collaborative writing; (b) peer editing; (c) technology integration; and (c) writing for a specific task, purpose, and style to improve writing scores in a rural school district in the Midwest. Through the use of a pilot team, members will test what specific writing strategies are effective in each content area and apply it in their own classrooms. Then, the pilot team will coach staff members in writing strategies and implementation in their own content areas for a building-wide initiative to increase self-efficacy with writing and improve student Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP) writing scores

Bedside Shift Report
A literature review was conducted between August 2023-November 2023 to investigate bedside shift report and its effects on nursing communication, patient safety, and patient satisfaction. Ten articles focusing on the benefits and barriers to performing nurse-to-nurse handoff reports at the bedside were analyzed. Recommendations are made based on the best practices of bedside shift report on medical-surgical units
Clinical Relevance of Adolescent OCP Use and Depression Risk
Prevalence of depression within the United States has risen significantly in recent years.1 Depression in females has increased by 12 percent compared to 3.8 percent in males between 2009 and 2019.3 Hormonal contraceptives are widely used by women throughout the world and often started as early as menarche. Traditionally intended to prevent unwanted pregnancies, contraceptives are frequently used in the symptom management of menorrhagia and dysmenorrhea in females.2 Oral contraceptive pills (OCP) are a popular choice for adolescents due to their ease of use, formulation varieties, and ability to be used long-term. Considering the widespread use, the adverse effects can have significant clinical relevance.3 OCPs have a wide variety of side effects - including mood changes; however, there is no clear consensus among researchers and clinicians on the associations between OCP use and risk of depression.2 Nevertheless, mood changes are a common reason for discontinuation of OCPs. Further investigation into the possible connection between hormonal contraceptive use and depression may offer insight into the prevalence of depression in adolescent females compared to adolescent males and should be taken into consideration by clinicians. Overall, medical providers should be better equipped to address these concerns with their patients. The purpose of this study is to conduct a literature review based on global studies investigating possible correlation between the use of hormonal contraceptives in adolescent females and subsequent mood changes, such as depression
How Culture and Language Impact the Way We View Healthcare
The United States is a growing multilingual and multicultural country. Although beautiful, it does present challenges in different areas of life particularly in the healthcare system as there are differences in language and/or cultural beliefs and practices. This leads to asking how cultural differences can impact how we think of healthcare. To challenge and understand this question more, a qualitative study was conducted based on interviews from two different healthcare facilities located in the same town of Sioux Center, Iowa—Promise Community Health Center (PCHC) and Sioux Center Health (SCH)—with interpreters, patients, and providers to understand the role each person has in the healthcare setting. This study will also focus on and highlight the growing Hispanic/Latino demographic in Sioux County, Iowa. These interviews will be analyzed to explain this community\u27s connections, challenges, and potential resources or solutions
The Adverse Health Outcomes of Benzene in Skincare Products
Benzene is a known carcinogen commonly used in daily skin care products that could have negative physiological effects on the body.
The risks associated with the use of benzene-containing products have been researched, however, current evidence has not fully differentiated whether the potential negative effects of benzene outweigh the protection that benzene products provide against the development of skin cancer
The Gut Microbiome in Chronic Diseases
Cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, and various mental health conditions have been shown to be associated with gut microbiota alterations that may contribute to the development and pathogenesis of those diseases. Cardiovascular disease, inflammatory bowel disease and diabetes have been associated with a lack of butyrate- producing bacteria which are responsible for lowering blood pressure, limiting atherosclerosis, abdominal pain, and lowering insulin resistance. Medications for individuals with schizophrenia may decrease bacteria with anti-inflammatory properties. Potential research avenues may be directed at investigating the di@erences between gut microbiomes between men and women to cultivate unique and targeted treatment and prevention plans for those that are predisposed to chronic diseases
