Main purpose of the librarians is to provide fast and correct access to information. Providing correct information is possible only through cataloging. One of the essentials of the cataloging is author name entries. Users' smooth access to the works of a specific author depends on the correct entry of author names. Entry of oriental authors which is the main focus of this study is made different than the author name entries. Unfortunately, there occur problems in the libraries that are unware of this difference. This study aims to identify the basic mistakes that are made at the entry of oriental author names in Ankara University Library catalogs and to provide solutions for these mistakes. In accordance with this purpose, definition of authority file, the place and importance of author entries in the historical process of cataloging, the basic problems faced during the identification of oriental author names and main sources of reference are discussed. The domestic and foreign applications concerning author name authority files that have been made up until today is mentioned. Moreover, within the scope of this study, 40 different university library catalogs are analyzed and basic mistakes are pointed out by referring to the author name examples taken from these catalogs. As a main application part of this research, author names of oriental studies in Ankara University Library are analyzed one by one and it is identified that 92% of the oriental authors in authority entries are faulty and deficient. To conclude, studies in Turkey concerning the oriental authors are limited with an institution or a person despite some efforts. These studies became outdated due to the lack of continuity. Lack of an authority that can be used as a source of reference while making catalog entries with oriental author names make librarians to find their own unique way of creating entries. It causes excessive information in the authority files that leads to information pollution
