Activity involvement and time spent on computers for leisure: an econometric analysis on the American Time Use Survey dataset

    No full text
Internet is capturing more and more of our time each day, and the increasing levels of engagement are mainly due to the use of social media. Time spent on social media is observed in the American Time Use Survey and recorded as leisure time on Personal Computer (PC). In this paper, we extend the traditional analysis of leisure activity participation by including leisure activities that require the use of a PC. We study the substitution effects with both in-home and out-of-home leisure activities and the time budget allocated to each of them. The modeling framework that includes both discrete alternatives and continuous decision variables allow for full correlation across the utility of the alternatives that are all of leisure type and the regressions that model the time allocated to each activity. Results show that there is little substitution effect between leisure with PC and the relative time spent on it, with in-home and out-of-home leisure episodes. Households with more children and full-time workers are more likely to engage in in-home and PC related leisure activities (especially during weekends). Increments in the travel time of social trips result in significant reductions in leisure time during weekdays

Environmental awarding criteria in Italian tenders for building works

    No full text
In Italian building tenders, the number of awarding environmental criteria is increasing. This gets out from a wide spread green sensitivity, but on the other side it could act as an opaque "green" screen on the decision process: the more the environmental require-ments are heavy awarded in the calls for bids, the more it is important their effectiveness instead of their standardization. Otherwise they work as a decision justifying factor instead of a local tailored and valuable contribution to a better environment. We investigated the use of standard environment assessments in building tenders and their effective impact on the building environmental performance in local conditions. We found out some awarding criteria listed by the generally accepted environmental protocols are not of the "fit-all" kind and should be rewritten considering the very local conditions, such as occupants' behavior, local day-by-day climate, existing public net-works of any kind. For example, in some cases, air to water heat pumps have high green ratings on their data sheets but poor performances in cold and foggy days; a shopping mall bicycle parking is of doubtable effectiveness without a neighborhood cycle lane network, despite well awarded by green protocols and so on. We are confident our findings could improve in the next future the accuracy of "green awards" in tenders (and thus the effectiveness of environmental friendly buildings) through a better and more conscious decisional process

Sistemi costruttivi antisismici storici in Italia: magistero costruttivo e sperimentazione normativa. Alcune note di confronto critico

    No full text

Node-Dependent Kinematic One-Dimensional Models for the Analysis of Rotating Structures

    No full text
In this paper, the dynamics of rotating structures has been studied using a refined one-dimensional finite element model with a node-dependent kinematics. The present approach has been used to derive models where refined theories are used only in the region in which they are required and classical models elsewhere. This produces a reduction in the computational cost without a reduction in the accuracy of the analysis. The equa- tions of motion have been derived in a three-dimensional fashion and they include all contributions due to the rotational speed, namely the gyroscopic, the spin softening, and the centrifugal stiffening terms. Classical and higher-order refined models have been established with the Carrera Unified Formulation. The nu- merical model has been assessed and then a number of appli- cations to thin-walled structures have been proposed. The cur- rent methodology appears very effective when rotors are con- stituted of components with different deformability such as com- pact shafts and disks. The results have been compared with those obtained from uniform kinematic models and convergence anal- yses have been performed. The results show the efficiency of the proposed model

Drawing Image Language. Three Authors for IBA 84

    No full text
This paper focuses on the initial "spark" of the design process, in which Drawing, Image, Language intertwine and/or prevail over each other. The possible and ideal meeting point of these three concepts has been identified and recreated within the International Competition IBA 84; which represents a suitable model for comparing different strategies; personalities; and design methods. The designers, carrying out a series of rational and poetic researches in areas often apparently detached from architecture such as philosophy, art, music and literature, need a medium that gives shape to their concept. This medium can be recognized in the representation. Aim of the research is to highlight the relationships between project concept and representation techniques
