Algebraic properties and spectral collapse in nonlinear quantum Rabi models

    No full text
We investigate the origin of spectral collapse occurring in nonlinear Rabi Hamiltonians with an su(1,1) coupling scheme, showing how the collapse can be triggered by the competition between the Rabi parameter g and the field frequency W. The collapse already appears in the model Hamiltonian where the atomic-energy term is absent. After showing that su(1,1) is the dynamical algebra of the Hamiltonian, we demonstrate how the occurrence of spectral collapse can be directly related to the three types of equivalence classes characterizing the structure of this algebra. We highlight how the dramatic change of the spectrum significantly affects the structure of eigenstates represented in a suitable momentum-coordinate picture

Electricity storage compared to net metering in residential PV applications

    No full text
The installation of PV systems in residential buildings has seen a dramatic increase in the last decade thanks to national policies like Feed in Tariff and Net Metering. Several users are now needing to increase their share of self-consumption to optimize the profits from their systems. Energy storage systems are entering the market in last years, claiming to provide an interesting upgrade for existing PV systems. In a broader perspective, energy storage systems will have a significant impact on the entire energy production and conversion processes. The aim of this paper is to present an analysis of the energetic and economic performance of an electricity storage system, compared with the net metering scheme, which is an effective economic support for residential PV systems in different countries. This research work is based on the Italian market as a case study, to perform a detailed analysis on the net metering scheme. Multiple parameters are considered into the calculation, including the location, the PV size, the storage size and a range of installation costs. The results highlight the main issues related to this technology, both from an energetic and economic point of view. While the economic sustainability is currently far from being reached, also the electricity losses generated in the storage system appear to be a significant disadvantage

Interpreting signal amplitudes in surface electromyography studies in sport and rehabilitation sciences

    Get PDF
Surface electromyography (sEMG) is a popular research tool in sport and rehabilitation sciences. Common study designs include the comparison of sEMG amplitudes collected from different muscles as participants perform various exercises and techniques under different loads. Based on such comparisons, researchers attempt to draw conclusions concerning the neuro- and electrophysiological underpinning of force production and hypothesize about possible longitudinal adaptations, such as strength and hypertrophy. However, such conclusions are frequently unsubstantiated and unwarranted. Hence, the goal of this review is to discuss what can and cannot be inferred from comparative research designs as it pertains to both the acute and longitudinal outcomes. General methodological recommendations are made, gaps in the literature are identified, and lines for future research to help improve the applicability of sEMG are suggested

Virtualization-based Evaluation of Backhaul Performance in Vehicular Applications

    No full text
Next-generation networks, based on SDN and NFV, are expected to support a wide array of services, including vehicular safety applications. These services come with strict delay constraints, and our goal in this paper is to ascertain to which extent SDN/NFV-based networks are able to meet them. To this end, we build and emulate a vehicular collision detection system, using the popular Mininet and Docker tools, on a real-world topology with mobility information. Using different core network topologies and open-source SDN controllers, we measure (i) the delay with which vehicle beacons are processed and (ii) the as- sociated overhead and energy consumption. We find that we can indeed meet the latency constraints associated with vehicular safety applications, and that SDN controllers represent a moderate contribution to the overall energy con- sumption but a significant source of additional delay

Performance analysis of the first PF coils design for the EU DEMO fusion reactor

    Get PDF
The first design of the NbTi Poloidal Field (PF) coils for the EU DEMO fusion reactor has been proposed by the Swiss Plasma Center (SPC) and by the Italian National Agency for New Tech-nologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA). The thermal-hydraulic (TH) performance analysis of the PF coil system presented in this work has been carried out using the state-of-the-art 4C code. The minimum temperature margin and the TH response of the coils to the heat deposition due to AC losses are computed in two different plasma scenarios, using a single time constant (nt) whose value is currently unknown. Therefore, we apply our model to parametrically assess the sensitivity of the PF performance to a range of nt values. The calculations are also performed taking into account that the high void fraction design of the conductor leads to the opening of a channel due to the Lorentz force. For all situations considered here, the 4C code predicts that the temperature margin never goes below the acceptable minimum of 1.5

ITALY CREATES. GIO PONTI, AMERICA AND THE SHAPING OF THE ITALIAN DESIGN IMAGE

    Get PDF
