    Effect of river flow fluctuations on riparian vegetation dynamics: Processes and models

    Several decades of field observations, laboratory experiments and mathematical modelings have demonstrated that the riparian environment is a disturbance-driven ecosystem, and that the main source of disturbance is river flow fluctuations. The focus of the present work has been on the key role that flow fluctuations play in determining the abundance, zonation and species composition of patches of riparian vegetation. To this aim, the scientific literature on the subject, over the last 20 years, has been reviewed. First, the most relevant ecological, morphological and chemical mechanisms induced by river flow fluctuations are described from a process-based perspective. The role of flow variability is discussed for the processes that affect the recruitment of vegetation, the vegetation during its adult life, and the morphological and nutrient dynamics occurring in the riparian habitat. Particular emphasis has been given to studies that were aimed at quantifying the effect of these processes on vegetation, and at linking them to the statistical characteristics of the river hydrology. Second, the advances made, from a modeling point of view, have been considered and discussed. The main models that have been developed to describe the dynamics of riparian vegetation have been presented. Different modeling approaches have been compared, and the corresponding advantages and drawbacks have been pointed out. Finally, attention has been paid to identifying the processes considered by the models, and these processes have been compared with those that have actually been observed or measured in field/laboratory studies

    Islanding in Distribution Systems Considering Wind Power and Storage

    In modern power systems the penetration of renewable energies has been growing dramatically. The combination of renewable energy and energy storage is seen as an opportunity to better exploit the intermittent and uncertain local generation in distribution systems, especially in the case of islanding. The main goal of this paper is to keep the load and generation units on-line under islanding conditions with respect to the total power imbalance of the isolated area and minimizing the power losses and nodal voltage deviations. A two-stage stochastic linear programming model is introduced to solve the optimization problem and find the best combination of generation, demand and electrical energy storage under islanding conditions.     Compressive Spatio-Temporal Forecasting of Meteorological Quantities and Photovoltaic Power

    This paper presents a solar power forecasting scheme, which uses spatial and temporal time series data along with a photovoltaic (PV) power conversion model. The PV conver- sion model uses the forecast of three different variables, namely, irradiance on the tilted plane, ambient temperature, and wind speed, in order to estimate the power produced by a PV plant at the grid connection terminals. The forecast values are obtained using a spatio-temporal method that uses the data recorded from a target meteorological station as well as data of its surrounding stations. The proposed forecasting method exploits the sparsity of correlations between time series data in a collection of sta- tions. The performance of both the PV conversion model and the spatio-temporal algorithm is evaluated using high-resolution real data recorded in various locations in Italy. Comparison with other benchmark methods illustrates that the proposed method significantly improves the solar power forecasts, particularly over short-term horizon

    Open Data Quality Measurement Framework: Definition and Application to Open Government Data

    The diffusion of Open Government Data (OGD) in recent years kept a very fast pace. However, evidence from practitioners shows that disclosing data without proper quality control may jeopardize datasets reuse and negatively affect civic participation. Current approaches to the problem in literature lack of a comprehensive theoretical framework. Moreover, most of the evaluations concentrate on open data platforms, rather than on datasets. In this work, we address these two limitations and set up a framework of indicators to measure the quality of Open Government Data on a series of data quality dimensions at most granular level of measurement. We validated the evaluation framework by applying it to compare two cases of Italian OGD datasets: an internationally recognized good example of OGD, with centralized disclosure and extensive data quality controls, and samples of OGD from decentralized data disclosure (municipalities level), with no possibility of extensive quality controls as in the former case, hence with supposed lower quality. Starting from measurements based on the quality framework, we were able to verify the difference in quality: the measures showed a few common acquired good practices and weaknesses, and a set of discriminating factors that pertain to the type of datasets and the overall approach. On the basis of this evaluation, we also provided technical and policy guidelines to overcome the weaknesses observed in the decentralized release policy, addressing specific quality aspect

    Impact behavior of a fully thermoplastic composite

    Composites are materials of choice for lightweight structures due to their excellent strength/weight/and stiffness/weight/properties. For several years, the application of composite materials with continuous fiber was limited to those with thermosetting matrix. Recently, interest in composites with thermoplastic matrix is growing thanks to their considerable advantages also in terms of recyclability. The thermoplastic composites appear to be the right alternative to the materials currently used, replacing not only the non-structural parts, but also the structural components located in areas potentially subject to impacts. This paper presents the results of an experimental campaign made on a fully thermoplastic composite, where both the reinforcement and the matrix are made in polypropylene. The target is to analyze its behavior under different impact loading conditions using a drop weight testing machine. The influence of the impact mass and of the velocity on the energy absorption capability of the material have been analyzed and discussed. During the tests, the material showed a ductile behavior and developed extended plasticity without a crack tip. The main observed damage mechanisms were the yarn sliding

    Modelling of the test of the JT-60SA HTS current leads

    The CURLEAD code, which was developed at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), implements an integrated 1D transient model of a high temperature superconducting (HTS) current lead (CL) including the room termination (RT), the meander-flow type heat exchanger (HX), and the HTS module. CURLEAD was successfully used for the design of the 70 kA ITER demonstrator and of the W7-X and JT-60SA CLs. Recently the code was successfully applied to the prediction and analysis of steady state operation of the ITER correction coils (CC) HTS CL. Here the steady state and pulsed operation of the JT-60SA HTS CLs are analysed, which requires also the modelling of the HX shell and of the vacuum shell, which was not present in the ITER CC. The CURLEAD model extension is presented and the capability of the new version of CURLEAD to reproduce the transient experimental data of the JT-60SA HTS CL is shown. The results obtained provide a better understanding of key parameters of the CL, among which the temperature evolution at the HX-HTS interface, the GHe mass flow rate needed in the HX to achieve the target temperature at that location and the heat load at the cold end
