Transition Bars and Related Honeycomb and Fingerprint Textures Exhibited by 12OBAC, 16OBAC and a Binary Mixture of Them

    No full text
By means of the polarized light microscopy, at the transitions between the smectic and nematic phase and between the smectic and the isotropic phase of some liquid crystals, we can observe the rising of transition bars and the presence of undulations in them. We can also see "honeycomb" and "fingerprint" textures as the evolution of the transition bars. Here, we will show some of these textures exhibited by compounds of the 4,n-alkyloxybenzoic (nOBAC) acid series. The compounds are 12OBAC, 16OBAC and a binary mixture of them. The binary mixture originates remarkable textures, which seem those of a modern art painting

Fra i disegni di Carlo Mollino. Modelli digitali ricostruttivi di architetture non realizzate / Between Carlo Mollino's drawings. Reconstructive digital models of unbuilt architectures

    No full text
Carlo Mollino, architect and designer, left many original drawings of great expressive quality documenting intensive design work, subject to few realizations. Graphical analysis and digital modeling offer new life to objects that become explorable, sectionable and decomposable and offer to scholars the opportunity of new interpretations of the architect's work. The developed case studies consist of unbuilt designs as a result of negative outcome of an architectural competition (Palazzo del Lavoro) or programmatically remained on paper (Casa in collina)

Risk factors for unfavourable postoperative outcome in patients with Crohn's disease undergoing right hemicolectomy or ileocaecal resection An international audit by ESCP and S-ECCO

BACKGROUND: Patient and disease-related factors, as well as operation technique all have the potential to impact on postoperative outcome in Crohn's disease. The available evidence is based on small series and often displays conflicting results. AIM: To investigate the effect of pre- and intra-operative risk factors on 30-day postoperative outcome in patients undergoing surgery for Crohn's disease. METHOD: International prospective snapshot audit including consecutive patients undergoing right hemicolectomy or ileocaecal resection. This study analysed a subset of patients who underwent surgery for Crohn's disease. The primary outcome measure was the overall Clavien-Dindo postoperative complication rate. The key secondary outcomes were anastomotic leak, re-operation, surgical site infection and length of stay at hospital. Multivariable binary logistic regression analyses were used to produce odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS: Three hundred and seventy five resections in 375 patients were included. The median age was 37 and 57.1% were female. In multivariate analyses, postoperative complications were associated with preoperative parenteral nutrition (OR 2.36 95% CI 1.10-4.97)], urgent/expedited surgical intervention (OR 2.00, 95% CI 1.13-3.55) and unplanned intraoperative adverse events (OR 2.30, 95% CI 1.20-4.45). The postoperative length of stay in hospital was prolonged in patients who received preoperative parenteral nutrition (OR 31, CI [1.08-1.61]) and those who had urgent/expedited operations (OR 1.21, CI [1.07-1.37]). CONCLUSION: Preoperative parenteral nutritional support, urgent/expedited operation and unplanned intraoperative adverse events were associated with unfavourable postoperative outcome. Enhanced preoperative optimization and improved planning of operation pathways and timings may improve outcomes for patients. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved

Internet of Things as a Means to Improve Agricultural Sustainability

    No full text
The paper presents a technological platform that favours the introduction of sustainable processes in agriculture. The platform is based on an extensive use of Wireless Sensor Networks, where low power nodes are combined with multimedia devices to integrate meteorological measurements with high definition pictures. Two different solutions are discussed: a short range, multi hop architecture and its long range, single hop variation. Experimental results demonstrate the performance of the proposed solutions, which appears particularly suitable to continuously and pervasively monitor vineyards, favouring a measurable reduction in the use of pesticides

Dai "beni minori" al patrimonio diffuso: conoscere e salvaguardare il "non monumentale"

    No full text

Cryogenic Characterization of FBK RGB-HD SiPMs

    No full text
We report on the cryogenic characterization of Red Green Blue - High Density (RGB-HD) SiPMs developed at Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) as part of the DarkSide program of dark matter searches with liquid argon time projection chambers. A dedicated setup was used to measure the primary dark noise, the correlated noise, and the gain of the SiPMs at varying temperatures. A custom-made data acquisition system and analysis software were used to precisely characterize these parameters. We demonstrate that FBK RGB-HD SiPMs with low quenching resistance (RGB-HD-LRq_q) can be operated from 40 K to 300 K with gains in the range 10510^5 to 10610^6 and noise rates on the order of a few Hz/mm2^2
