Gain improvement of rectangular dielectric resonator antenna by engraving grooves on its side walls

    No full text
A new technique for increasing the boresight gain of a rectangular dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) operating at its fundamental radiating TEy111 mode is introduced. The idea is to increase the radiations from the side walls of the DRA compared to that of its top wall by engraving grooves on the side walls. A model based on the array theory is developed to explain the high-gain nature of the antenna. The measured results demonstrate that the proposed antenna achieves an impedance bandwidth of 21% over a band of 3.24-4 GHz, with a maximum gain of 9.6 dB. This is significantly higher with respect to available data in the literature

A multi-scale model of fibre reinforced beams using hierarchical one-dimensional finite elements

A multi-scale model of fibre reinforced beams using hierarchical one-dimensional finite elements A multi-scale analysis of fibre reinforced composite beams was proposed by this presentation. At structural level, several higher-order refined beam theories can be easily implemented on the basis of Carrera's unified formulation (CUF) by deriving a fundamental nucleus that does not depend upon the approximation order nor the number of nodes per element (they are free parameters of the formulation). Under the framework of FE2 method, the effective properties of the fibre-reinforced composite material are found by numerical homogenization over representative volume elements, that is, the unknown constitutive relationship at the macro-scale is obtained by solving a local finite element problem at the micro-scale. Consequently, a coupled two-scale problem is obtained for linear cases. Results are validated in terms of accuracy and computational costs towards FEM solutions. Numerical investigations show that accurate results can be obtained with reduced computational costs

Windings fault detection and prognosis in electro-mechanical flight control actuators operating in active-active configuration

One of the most significant research trends in the last decades of the aeronautic industry is the effort to move towards the design and the production of "more electric aircraft". Within this framework, the application of the electrical technology to flight control systems has seen a progressive, although slow, increase: starting with the introduction of fly-by-wire and proceeding with the partial replacement of the traditional hydraulic/electro-hydraulic actuators with purely electro-mechanical ones. This evolution allowed to obtain more flexible solutions, reduced installation issues and enhanced aircraft control capability.Electro-Mechanical Actuators (EMAs) are however far from being a mature technology and still suffer from several safety issues, which can be partially limited by increasing the complexity of their design and hence their production costs. The development of a robust Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) system could provide a way to prevent the occurrence of a critical failure without resorting to complex device design. This paper deals with the first part of the study of a comprehensive PHM system for EMAs employed as primary flight control actuators; the peculiarities of the application are presented and discussed, while a novel approach, based on short pre-flight/post-flight health monitoring tests, is proposed. Turn-to-turn short in the electric motor windings is identified as the most common electrical degradation and a particle filtering framework for anomaly detection and prognosis featuring a self-tuning non-linear model is proposed. Features, anomaly detection and a prognostic algorithm are hence evaluated through state-of-the art performance metrics and their results discussed

Peer comparison as motivational trigger to save energy in office environment

To ensure a sustainable energy development in the commercial sector, attitudes and human behaviour need to be modified towards a more efficient and conscious energy usage. The goal of this research is to assess evaluations and to test the effectiveness in reducing office electricity consumption. The aim of the engagement campaign is to provide employees with a user-friendly tool that improves awareness of their energy behaviour in the workplace, enabling better management via the visualization of consumption and persuasive tailored information on office electricity use. In this study, the system was tested on an office building in Italy, participating to the campaign from February 2014 to January 2016. A combination of persuasive communication strategies such as graphical real-time and historical feedback based on real data and comparison tools to encourage competitiveness against "similar" employees were provided to users through a user-friendly interface. In addition, personalized energy saving prompts were sent via web-newsletters to the users. The study concludes that energy related persuasive communication is effective in reducing electricity consumption in dwellings but employees in this study did not demonstrate "normative" comparison as potentially motivation form of feedback

Evaluation of refurbishment alternatives for an Italian vernacular building considering architectural heritage, energy efficiency and costs

    No full text
Despite the majority of legislative requirements in terms of energy performances is not addressed to historical buildings, there is an increasing consciousness on their relevance to reach the European CO2 emissions' reduction goals. This paper engages the theme of traditional buildings' refurbishment, with a view to the necessity of a conscious intervention in terms of heritage preservation, energy efficiency and financial viability. In particular, the research analyzed a real case study of a rural building located in North Italy; the main objective of the study is to compare two different refurbishment scenarios by simultaneously considering architectural, energy and financial aspects

Analysis of a printed circuit board with many uncertain variables by sparse polynomial chaos

    No full text
This communication deals with the uncertainty quantification in high dimensional problems. It introduces a metamodel based on the sparse polynomial chaos for the analysis of a printed circuit board, depending on many uncertain variables. This metamodel allows to estimate statistical quantities of an output with a relative low computational cost compared to Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. Results obtained have been validated by comparison with MC simulation
