A time-frequency relationship between the Langevin equation and the harmonic oscillator
We derive a simple relationship between the Wigner distribution of the Green's function of the Langevin equation and of the harmonic oscillator. This relationship shows that the Wigner distribution of the Green's function of the harmonic oscillator consists of the sum of two terms obtained by translating the Wigner distribution of the Green's function of the Langevin equation at the resonant frequencies of the harmonic oscillator, plus an interference term. This result paves the way for a simplification of the time-frequency representation of differential equations, as well as for a better understanding and filtering of interference terms
A Spin-off as an effective result of transfer of knowledge and skills in the field of Living Wall Systems
The transfer of the knowledge - developed in research activities - is one of the main missions of the University to spread innovative technologies on the market. The outcomes obtained in a multidisciplinary research project - aimed at designing, prototyping and monitoring a modular Living Wall System (LWS) with high energy and environmental performance - led to the founding of the Growing Green. Growing Green is a Politecnico di Torino's Spin-off working in cooperation with University of Turin and hosted by the Innovative Enterprise Incubator I3P (Politecnico di Torino). The development and production of eco-friendly LWSs, closely connected to R&D activities, can be assumed as the Growing Green core business. The Spin-off is therefore aimed to place on the construction market low environmental impact LWSs based on: simplified and standardized products; vegetated modular boxes manufactured with a limited number of materials, substructures and installations; a building system characterized by reversible connections. The paper deals with a new way of working within Universities in order to achieve high level of innovation and positive impacts on economy and society. The paper discusses technological and agronomic aspects related to manufacturing (e.g. reduction of material intensity, industrialization of processes), on site assembling (e.g. quick-installing procedures, pre-vegetation, building integration) and maintenance stages (e.g. reduction of water needs and number of pruning per year, automatic control) through the presentation of two case studies (outdoor vs indoor LWSs)
Evaluation of the flexural behaviour of 3D printed multimaterial beams
Among Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes, Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM), more popularly renown as 3D printing1, allows the fabrication of multimaterial parts by extrusion of multiple thermoplastic filaments that are then deposited layer after layer. In such a way parts are built bottom to top and the different materials can be deployed in each cross section according to strategies aiming at optimizing the reinforcement through the exploitation of the design freedom of AM technologies. Most diffused commercial materials for FDM are Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) and the biodegradable PolyLactic Acid (PLA), that are amorphous polymers characterized by similar mechanical properties. The use of semicrystalline polymers in FDM is often avoided because of the higher amount of shrinkage which causes the warpage of the deployed layers during manufacturing. The innovative aspect of this paper is the use of a filament made of a Polyammide (PA) blend as a reinforcement in multimaterial beams of PLA that are fabricated by FDM. The flexural behaviour of the composite beams is evaluated by three point bending tests according to the ASTM D790 method. Owing to the lack of a specific reference for 3D printing, dimensions of the specimens are assumed equal to those of injection molded specimens. Their nominal overall dimensions are 3.25 x 12.7 x 127 mm. In this preliminary study, test specimens are 3D printed with a core of PA having a rectangular cross section, whose width (w) and height (h) are varied. Bending tests show that the PA core increases both the flexural stiffness and the flexural strength of the PLA beam. Experimental results are compared with those of the finite element (FE) simulation of the bending test performed by using Abaqus/CAE software. 3D printing issues are also considered and discussed along with the influence of the layer by layer fabrication on the beam resistance

Transport quality profiles of European cities based on a multidimensional set of satisfaction ratings indicators
A monitoring system of the perceived quality of transport services at the city level is proposed, based on a set of 92 indicators covering different travel modes and considering the viewpoint of different groups. Special emphasis is given to public transport, bicycles and pedestrians and to travelers with special needs (e.g. commuters, visitors, mobility challenged or communication impaired). Indicators are found through Principal Component Analysis from a set of satisfaction ratings elicited through a survey in eight European cities, implemented within the METPEX research project. Benchmarking values are computed for all indicators to provide the analyst with some initial guidance. All indicators are then visualized through a dashboard that can give policy makers a synthetic overview of the main areas where perceived quality and accessibility are above or below average. At the same time, jointly considering indicators from different dimensions of the evaluation exercise (by travel means, by traveler profile, by phase of the journey experience) provides additional insights on specific issues that would be overlooked in a coarser quality assessment activity
La valutazione dei Servizi Ecosistemici Forestali per la pianificazione e il progetto del territorio e del paesaggio
Forest landscapes perform a wide range of functions, which are not merely environmental but also socioeconomic and cultural in nature, constituting valuable sources of Ecosystem Services (ES). In the countries of southwestern Europe, widespread fires, caused not only by climate change but also trends in land use (renaturalisation and urban sprawl, with an increase in the "forest-city" interface), jeopardise the provision of Forest Ecosystem Services (FES). Valuation and mapping of FES to better define forest fire risk and to increase awareness among institutions and stakeholders of the value of forest landscapes represent an important step towards establishing policies that are effective in preventing the risk of fires. This paper, which is the result of research conducted as part of the European project "Advanced Forest Fire Fighting" (AF3, Seventh Framework Programme), sets out a method for valuing and mapping FES in the Sardinia Region, which is particularly prone to the risk of forest fires. The method has been designed so that it can be applied if necessary by public administrators themselves, thus it does not entail the use of models but the application of both biophysical and economic GIS-based indicators. Economic valuation of FES, which refer to Total Economic Value (TEV) theory, has been based on different valuation methods, searching for an equilibrium between the reliability of valuation and its potential applicability by institutional actors. Moreover, geo-referencing these indicators has made it possible to draw up maps of forest values, important tools to support planning policies for forest landscapes. The paper reports the premises, structure, results and prospects of the method, applied to the forests of the Sardinia Region at both the regional and local scale. It concludes by focusing not only on the method's potential for specific awareness-raising, but also the more general implications for spatial and landscape planning, management and design policies
Impact of wet-dry cycles on the swell pressure of a polymer modified bentonite and theoretical interpretation of experimental results
Geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) are widely used as hydraulic barrier to isolate waste disposal facilities thanks to their low permeability to water. In the field, the efficiency of GCLs can be altered by cation exchange and highly concentrated solutions during contact with aggressive liquids and by desiccation caused by temperature changes. As a consequence, wet and dry cycles lead to loss of swelling ability and cracking of the bentonite with possible loss of hydraulic efficiency and contamination of the surrounding ground. Swell pressure tests were performed to inspect the effect of wet and dry cycles with seawater on the swelling ability of untreated bentonite and a polymer modified bentonite, HYPER clay Experimental results of untreated bentonite were back analyzed with a theoretical model to estimate the equilibrium concentration. Test results showed that HYPER clay presented improved behaviour in terms of swelling ability through the cycles
