Phytochemistry, Antimicrobial, and Antibiofilm Properties of Malagasy Helichrysum manopappoides Essential Oil

    No full text
: Helichrysum Mill. is one of the largest genera in the Asteraceae family, and in Madagascar, a plant paradise with ca 14,000 species, 111 Helichrysum species are known, 110 of which are endemic. In this work, the essential oil of endemic Helichrysum manopappoides Humbert, obtained by steam distillation, was investigated chemically and biologically. The spectrometric data obtained by GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) analysis highlighted the presence of three major compounds, such as eucalyptol (7.38 ± 0.36%), α-humulene (14.75 ± 0.79%), and β-caryophyllene (19.78 ± 0.89%), which were also structurally confirmed by NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) spectroscopic investigation. Biological results showed potential antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antibiofilm effects of both the H manopappoides essential oil and the main components identified by GC-MS, enhancing an interesting approach for intestinal infections, being active against Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Shigella sonnei, and Salmonella enterica ser. typhimurium strains

    Contrastive discourse analysis

    No full text
In this article, I review the field of contrastive linguistics, tracking its development over time, its theoretical underpinnings, and its integration with corpus linguistics. I then offer a reflective case study, designed to illustrate how contrastive approaches can shed light on the varied discursive construction of shared societal challenges across languages. Specifically, through a focus on public-oriented research communication in English, French, and Spanish, I demonstrate how language, culture, and situated epistemologies shape knowledge-making in different linguistic and cultural contexts. In closing, I point to future directions in corpus-based contrastive discourse studies

Economic Burden of Rheumatoid Arthritis in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Objective: The aim of this systematic review was to synthesize the economic impact of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) on households, health systems, and society in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Methods: Electronic databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, and CINAHL were searched using keywords related to RA and cost of illness. Eligible studies were required to report RA-related costs, be conducted in LMICs, and be published in English. Quality appraisal of the included studies was conducted using the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale for cohort studies. A narrative synthesis and meta-analysis of findings was conducted. Results: A total of 5,134 studies was initially identified for screening. After removing 1,028 duplicates, 50 studies were selected for full-text review, and 15 met the eligibility criteria and were therefore included in the review. These studies, published between 2007 and 2024, were conducted in various countries, including Turkey (n = 3), China (n = 2), and one study each from Thailand, Hungary, Mexico, Colombia, Morocco, Pakistan, India, Romania, Brazil, and Argentina. Nine studies adopted a societal perspective, whereas six used a health care perspective. The total sample size was 218,575 participants, with individual study sizes ranged from 62 to 209,292. Average annual direct costs per patient ranged from US523toUS523 to US2,837.90, and indirect costs ranged from US81.80toUS81.80 to US2,463.40. The pooled average annual costs for outpatients, inpatients, and medical costs were US517.72(95517.72 (95% confidence interval [CI] 3.35–1,032.09),US1,032.09), US543.88 (95% CI US499.51US499.51–US588.24), and US3,379.83(953,379.83 (95% CI US3,137.58–US$3,622.08), respectively. Conclusion: RA poses a significant economic challenge in LMICs, where limited health care resources and high treatment costs make care unaffordable for many. This review uniquely underscores that enhancing treatment access and optimizing resource use can reduce both medical and productivity losses, improving patient outcomes and strengthening economic resilience

Leadership in Elite Football Academy Management Teams

    No full text
Purpose: In the United Kingdom (U.K.), football academies are required to have an Academy Management Team (AMT); middle management responsible for ensuring the Academy functions effectively and efficiently. This study sought to explore the training and educational requirements for AMT members and suggest practical recommendations for the development of AMT members in the future. Methodology: Recruiting 45 AMT members, a mixed-methods approach was employed using a survey and semi-structured interviews. Findings: Thematic analysis developed themes reflecting large differences in the leadership and management training of AMT members. This related to the specific concept of interpretation and translation of strategy throughout their own department and the Academy. Practical Implications: Leadership and management training for middle managers (AMT) is poorly funded with current skills primarily developed through previous experience. Those who had undertaken leadership and management training felt better equipped at interpreting and translating information to inform more effective decisions Training needs ranged from area such as performance management of staff and allocating resources to managing change and strategic planning within the academy. Research Contribution: This study explored the training and educational needs of middle managers (AMT) within elite UK football academies

Community activity intervention reduced sitting time and improved population physical activity levels

Background The aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of the Beat the Street intervention; a gamification intervention to promote physical activity, reduce sitting time and improve wellbeing, among residents of Chelmsford and South Woodham Ferrers. Methods Pre-post experimental design of the Beat the Street Intervention. Beat the Street gamifies neighbourhoods, incentivising the community to actively travel, collecting virtual points at sensors on selected lamp posts called ‘Beat Boxes’ advertised on maps and phone applications. Participants were asked to complete a baseline questionnaire after registering, and before the six-week “game phase” of the intervention. A follow-up questionnaire was then completed at the end of the intervention. Mean differences were calculated to provide interpretations of differences. Within-subjects differences for all measures were assessed by Wilcoxon Signed Rank separately for children and adults, followed by each demographic grouping. Significance for all analyses was set at p < 0.05. Results Nine hundred fifteen (n = 313 children) participants reported sitting time and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity both pre- and post-intervention. For both children and adults overall, there was an increase in reported wellbeing and a reduction in reported sitting time daily and sitting time week, while life satisfaction increased for adults overall. Additionally, the percentage of participants classed as inactive decreased for both children and adults. Conclusion The present findings suggest that the Beat the Street intervention reduced sitting time and increased physical activity among both children and adults in the short term. Further research is needed to assess the long-term impacts and explore objective measures of sitting time to better understand sustained engagement and outcomes
