miR223, miR30e, and miR30a show associations with perinatal metabolic acidosis in neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy
Objective: Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) is a leading cause of neonatal death and long-term disabilities, leading researchers to explore novel candidate biomarkers to improve early diagnosis and guide treatment strategies. miR223, miR30a and miR30e have attracted attention as potential biomarkers for HIE due to its involvement in key cellular processes like inflammation, cell death, and neuroprotection. The rationale of this study was to examine longitudinal maternal and infant circulating miRNA blood levels from T0–T3 to 48 h of life in relation to perinatal metabolic acidosis and neonatal hypoxic–ischemic encephalopathy status. Study design: A prospective observational cohort study involving newborns born from September 2023 to September 2024 was carried out. Healthy newborns were assigned as control group (CG), those with pH < 7.12 without inclusion criteria for hypothermic treatment were assigned to no hypothermic treatment group (NHTG) those that met inclusion criteria for hypothermic treatment were included in the hypothermic treatment group (HTG). Blood samples of the newborns were collected by umbilical cord artery along with maternal venous blood at birth (T0), at 3 (T3) and 48 (T48) hours after birth, the latter were collected from capillary blood. Results: Our results demonstrated consistent upregulation of miR223, miR30e and miR30a at T0 and T3 in NHTG and HTG. Interestingly, miR223 and miR30a were upregulated also in samples obtained by NHTG and HTG mother blood. Conclusion: In this exploratory analysis, miR223, miR30e, and miR30a were found to be associated with perinatal metabolic acidosis and acute hypoxic stress, as defined by cord blood pH and clinical HIE status at presentation, supporting their role as candidate markers of early postnatal response. Assessing the effect of microplastics on marine invertebrates: the consequence of exposure of sea urchin larvae to polystyrene microplastics
Polystyrene (PS) microplastics (PSMPs) represent a pervasive environmental pollutant in marine ecosystems, originating from the fragmentation of widely used, non-biodegradable plastic materials such as disposable plates. Despite growing concern over their ecological impacts, the mechanistic understanding of PSMP toxicity during critical early developmental stages remains limited. Here, we employed the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus , a well-established model organism in marine ecotoxicology due to its sensitivity to environmental stressors, to investigate the effects of PSMPs derived from commercial disposable plates on fertilization, early embryogenesis, and larval development. We assessed morphological malformations, alterations in gene expression profiles related to detoxification, skeletogenesis, development, and stress responses, as well as embryo resilience to physical stress. Our results demonstrated that PSMP exposure induced significant developmental malformations and downregulation of multiple gene networks critical for normal development. Notably, the toxicity was dose- and time-dependent, with smaller particles and higher concentrations exerting more pronounced effects. Importantly, we observed that embryos retained the capacity for physiological recovery following PSMP removal, indicating a reversible toxic effect under certain conditions. These findings provided novel insights into the molecular and developmental pathways affected by PSMPs, revealing complex interactions between particle properties and biological responses. The study underlined the substantial risks posed by PSMP contamination to marine invertebrate early life stages, with potential cascading consequences for population dynamics and ecosystem health. Our work highlighted the urgent need for improved management of plastic waste and further mechanistic research to inform conservation strategies aimed at mitigating microplastic pollution in marine environments

Comparative analysis of antibiotic-administered vs. antibiotic-free farming in meat production: Implications for health, environment, and antibiotic resistance
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an escalating global health problem, endangering human, animal, and environmental health. In animal farming, the widespread use of antimicrobials is recognized one of the major drivers of AMR. Therefore, this review provides a meta-analysis of 37 studies published between 2014 and 2024, comparing the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in antibiotic-free (ABF) versus conventional animal farming (CONV) systems. The statistical analysis revealed that CONV farms exhibited a higher likelihood of harboring ARGs, with a pooled odds ratio of 2.38 (95 % CI: 2.00–2.83) in the fixed-effects model and 3.21 (95 % CI: 1.68–6.13) in the random-effects model. Significant heterogeneity was observed (I2 = 82.8 %, p < 0.0001), highlighting the variations across the study designs. However, ARGs were still detected in 97 % of ABF farms, suggesting that antibiotic reduction alone may not be enough to control AMR in animal farming. These findings underscore the complex nature of AMR, influenced by environmental contamination, microbial interactions, human practices, and ecological pressures such as climate change. Future strategies should adopt a holistic One Health approach to effectively mitigate AMR risks across sectors and safeguard public and planetary health
Cybersecurity Assurance for SMEs: A Conceptual Framework Integrating Organizational Culture, Fraud Risk Management and Forensic Accounting
As digitalization accelerates across the global economy, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) face increasing exposure to cybersecurity threats, not due to flaws in external platforms, but because of internal organizational vulnerabilities. This paper presents a conceptual framework that integrates the resource-based view (RBV) and dynamic capabilities theory (DCT) to explore how SMEs can strategically enhance their cyber resilience. We reconceptualize fraud risk management (FRM), forensic accounting (FA) and cyber-aware organizational culture as strategic resources that, when systematically integrated, enable dynamic capabilities for cyber resilience. These resources support organizational processes to sense emerging threats, seize response opportunities and reconfigure defencive capabilities in resource-constrained environments. By shifting the focus from technology-centric models to capability-driven strategies, this framework positions cybersecurity as a strategic asset, essential for sustaining operational continuity, safeguarding reputation and enhancing competitive advantage. The framework offers theoretical insights and practical guidance for SME leaders, policymakers and practitioners navigating cybersecurity challenges in resource-constrained environments
