    Circular Strategies for Protected Areas: Valorization and Recycling of Forest Resources in the Madonie Park (Italy)

    The emerging concept of circular parks positions protected areas as active generators of shared value, as they integrate biodiversity conservation with natural resource optimization, local economies, and social cohesion. This perspective challenges traditional passive management by applying circular economy principles to parks as dynamic territorial organisms embedded within a regional socio-ecological metabolism. The research explores and tests circular park approaches starting from forest-related resource flows in areas where ecological richness coexists with socio-economic fragility. Focusing on the case study of the Madonie Regional Park (Sicily, Italy), the research investigates alternative pathways for the reuse of retrievable biomass by relating material flows to local social, economic, and cultural activities potentially involved in circular processes. This study supports the design of recycling, repurpose, and re-vision strategies to transform residual biomass into regenerative local value and strengthen the territorial resilience in inner areas characterized by demographic fragility despite being endowed with significant environmental and cultural capital. Through a design-oriented approach, the research experiments with alternative circular strategies in a case study, proposing a shift from extractive and mono-output models towards multi-output approaches and from an energy-centered towards a community-centered model. This perspective emerges not only as a cultural challenge but also as an opportunity to build an operational and replicable planning practice within the Italian and European park system, contributing to the debate on the ecological transition of fragile territories

    Comparison of Biochemical and Physiological Properties of Two Brassica Microgreens Cultivated in Two Growth Systems

    Microgreens are promising crops for low-input systems, but the roles of species traits and root environments under uncontrolled greenhouse conditions are not yet fully addressed. In this study, mibuna and pak choi were evaluated in the presence or absence of substrate to clarify how genetic and physical factors shape growth and biochemical composition. Clear species-dependent differences emerged. Pak choi showed higher constitutive levels of chlorophyll a, anthocyanins, and key osmotic ions, and these features contributed to a more hydrated tissue profile. Mibuna instead exhibited a higher dry matter content, approximately 7% compared with 5.86% in pak choi, and a lighter canopy. The use of peat markedly improved overall growth. Fresh yield increased by more than 50%, and dry yield increased by almost 48% compared with the substrate-free system. Peat also enhanced organic acid metabolism, with malate and citrate increasing by 277 and 102%, respectively. Despite such differences, nitrate concentrations remained low and within safe limits for leafy vegetables in all treatments. The results indicate that species identity and the cultivation system significantly shaped overall microgreen performance under low-input conditions. Understanding these drivers provides a foundation for optimizing production while maintaining desirable nutritional traits

    Emplacement and growth of a stacked tube-fed lava flow field: the 2021 Tajogaite eruption (La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain)

    On 19 September 2021, the Cumbre Vieja volcano in the southern part of La Palma (Canary Islands) erupted after 50 years of quiescence. A northwest-southeast eruptive fissure opened on the west flank of the volcano, producing explosive and effusive activity that lasted until 13 December 2021. The explosive activity from the fissure built up a new cone named Tajogaite, and the discharge of high temperature and low viscosity magma gave rise to lava flows. These spread from the base of the cone to the west, reaching the sea and forming a complex lava flow field with the stacking of flows and lava tube pathways. The eruption caused the destruction of 2988 buildings and ~ 12 km2 of urbanized areas, farmland, and plantations, emplacing ~ 200 × 106 m3 lava and ~ 45 × 106 m3 tephra, with ~ 5 × 106 m3 lava forming a lava delta. This eruption offered a unique opportunity to study the emplacement of a complex lava tube network developed initially within ‘a‘ā arterial flows and later on within pāhoehoe flows. We present an account of the expansion of the lava flow field and of the development of lava tubes gathered from satellite images and field surveys. We go on to characterize the processes of lava flow field development and lava tube formation and growth and estimate the time-averaged discharge rate and erupted lava volume. From the start of the eruption to the end of October, the lava flow field was mainly characterized by the emplacement of four sequential ‘a‘ā arterial flows. Along these flows, master lava tubes rapidly developed by the roofing-over of lava channels within a few days from their emplacement. The ‘a‘ā arterial flows advanced in a caterpillar-like fashion, alternating proximal lava channel overflows and drainage corresponding to the slowing down and accelerating of the lava front. From November to the end of the eruption, a decreased discharge rate resulted in the output of mainly pāhoehoe flows emplaced in the medial portion of the lava flow field. Overlapping ‘a‘ā and pāhoehoe flow units formed stacked tube systems. Our results highlight the speed and processes of lava flow field development and lava tube growth during an effusive eruption on a steep slope (> 4°), the complexity of lava tubes at multiple levels in a stacked flow sequence, and provide useful information for hazard mitigation should a new eruption occur in this area or on other steep volcanoes

    FEDCOM: FEDerated Communication-Efficient Object Detection Model

    The emergence of 6G edge intelligence demands highly efficient, adaptive Machine Learning (ML) solutions that operate under severe resource constraints. In this paper, we introduce FEDCOM, a scalable framework designed to support Continual Learning (CL) in federated edge environments through selective communication and adaptive model updates. FEDCOM uses Federated Continual Learning (FCL), which combines Federated Learning with CL and low-power optimization strategies, to minimize energy usage and bandwidth consumption during communication between server and clients. The core idea is to reduce the environmental and computational costs of distributed training by transmitting only unfrozen (trainable) layers during communication and scheduling client participation based on a data novelty metric. This approach limits unnecessary computation and avoids redundant communication, aligning with the goals of sustainable and low-latency 6G edge intelligence. We tested FEDCOM in a precision agriculture setting for an object detection (OD) task, using the YOLOv12s model. The system leverages edge datasets across multiple domains and evaluates energy consumption and OD performance in realistic scenarios. Experimental results demonstrate that FEDCOM reduces computational costs and carbon footprint compared to full retraining and standard FCL, while preserving detection performance. It reduces energy consumption by over 60% compared to the baseline, especially in later domains, thanks to layer-freezing and client selection. FEDCOM shows how FCL, along with scheduling and communication-efficient strategies, can be powerful in 6G TinyML real-world applications, extending the operational lifespan of edge devices and improving the use of FCL in limited environments

    Race has long played a central role in the production and maintenance of linguistic hierarchies, in which racially stigmatised populations are often framed as displaying linguistic deficiencies. These hierarchies are part of broader patterns of coloniality, white supremacy, and anti-Blackness. Whilst linguists have sought to challenge these ideologies, they are often also complicit in (re)producing them. A raciolinguistic perspective seeks to contest essentialist notions of race and language whilst pointing to the colonial histories of oppressive ideologies about language, and pushing for transformative theories of social change which put issues of linguistic justice into dialogue with racial justice struggles more broadly

    Exploring the (im)possibilities of organizing for sustainable development in business schools.

    Amidst widening global inequalities and financial and climate crises, there have been increasing calls for business schools and management education to play a leading role in facilitating sustainable development and transformative social change (e.g., George et al., 2016; Neal, 2017). This is epitomised in initiatives such as the United Nations Principles for Responsible Education (PRME), which engages business and management schools to adopt and integrate responsible management principles in support of the Sustainable Development Goals (PRME Secretariat, 2021). In response to this, a growing body of literature focuses on questions of how and to what extent sustainable development principles have been mainstreamed in business and management programmes (Abdelgaffar, 2021; Weybrecht, 2022; The PRME Global Movement, 2021) as well as developing and sharing related pedagogical tools (Brower, 2011). Yet, despite proclaimed commitments from business and management schools, evidence suggests that the uptake and integration of sustainable development principles is fragmented and superficial (Abdelgaffar, 2021; Weybrecht, 2022); that business and management schools are, at best, slow to change and possibly even resistant to the kind of change required in commitments to sustainable development (Hoffman, 2023). Further, critical scholarship highlights the complicity of business schools and management in (re)producing poverty and inequality (Fotaki & Prasad, 2015; Kumar & Cooke, 2022), calling into question their potential to play any role in addressing such problems
