Desarrollo de un SIG para el análisis de patrones de incendios en viviendas
No full textLos servicios de extinción de incendios en las ciudades se ven obligados a realizar su tarea cada vez con mayor rapidez y eficiencia, pero sin que exista a menudo un equilibrio entre el aumento de las exigencias en su trabajo y el correspondiente incremento de los recursos tanto materiales como humanos. Por eso se hace cada vez más imprescindible contar con nuevas técnicas y herramientas que faciliten su labor, permitiéndoles mejorar sus prestaciones con los mismos recursos. Una de las herramientas emergentes que puede ayudar a los servicios de extinción de incendios a optimizar su funcionamiento son los Sistemas de Información Geográfica (SIG). En este artículo se presentan los trabajos desarrollados hasta el momento por los autores para construir una herramienta informática basada en la tecnología SIG que pueda ser utilizada por los servicios de extinción de incendios tanto para prevenirlos como para responder de manera más rápida, eficaz y económica ante una emergencia por incendio en una vivienda o edificio. La herramienta desarrollada está orientada fundamentalmente al análisis de la distribución espacio-temporal de los incendios, con el objetivo de determinar los puntos calientes, esto es, aquellos lugares y/o momentos en los que existe una concentración atípica de incendios en el espacio y/o en el tiempo. Dicha herramienta ha sido desarrollada utilizando como base los programas gvSIG y R, ambos de acceso libre. El primero proporciona la funcionalidad de los SIG para trabajar con información geográfica, mientras que del segundo se aprovecha su capacidad para realizar análisis estadísticos. El sistema desarrollado se está utilizando para estudiar puntos calientes de incendios ocurridos en el municipio de Vigo entre los años 2005 y 2008The fire services in cities are forced to perform their task with increasing speed and efficiency, but often there is a balance between increasing demands at work and the corresponding increase in resources, both material and human. So it is increasingly imperative to have new techniques and tools to facilitate their work, enabling them to enhance their performance for the same money. One of the emerging tools that can assist fire fighting services to optimize its operation is Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This article presents the work developed so far by the authors to build a software tool based on GIS technology can be used by fire services both to prevent and to respond quickly, efficiently and economically to an emergency fire in a house or building. The developed tool is mainly oriented to the analysis of spatial-temporal distribution of fires, with the aim of identifying hot spots, places and times when there is an unusual concentration of fires in space and time. This tool has been developed using programs based on gvSIG and R, both free access. The first provides GIS functionality for working with geographic information, while the second takes advantage of its ability to perform statistical analysis. World of trouble: voyaging through stressed ecosystems
No full textThe Earth system is maintained in a stable climatic state by a myriad of forcing, responses and feedbacks. While the components of the Earth system have the abitlity to absorb disturbances while maintaining essential functions and structure (resilience), beyond certain thresholds either the entire system, its components or building blocks thereof may shift to entirely different ecological or climatic states. While little control is possible on natural (external) disturbances, humans have the ability to minimize their own environmental stressors via sound planning, designs and management so that Earth's ecosystems can be developed and maintained in a sustainable manner. In so doing, knowledge from natural environmental, human, social and engineering studies needs to be melded, their interdependencies identified and holistic models that include essential complexities must be developed. This is significantly different from the reductionist approach of classical scientific study. This presentation concerns some recent catastrophic failures of human-centric (urban) ecosystems during natural disasters due to environmetally incongruous engineering designs or lax regularoty enforcement. Also discussed will be urban systems subject to sustained anthropogenic stressing that are at the risk of losing resilience. Atomistic modeling of multimillion atom nanostructures
No full textAtomistic calculations of properties of self-assembled quantum dots (SAD) involve computational domains of millions of atoms and their electronic properties cannot at present be computed using ab-initio methods. We present here approach consisting of three major steps: (1) calculation of equilibrium positions of atoms using valence force field model (VFF), (2) calculation of single particle electron and hole states using the linear combination of atomic orbitals - tight binding approximation (TB), and (3) inclusion of interactions between quasi-particles by defining an effective Hamiltonian of interacting excited quasiparticles, solved using the configuration interaction method (CI). In the VFF calculation we use the Keating model with material parameters chosen to reproduce bulk elastic constants. The TB parameters for InAs, InP and GaAs are obtained by fitting TB bulk band edges and effective masses to those obtained in experiment or by ab-initio calculations, with the valence band offset built into the parameter set. The strain dependence of TB parameters is fitted to reproduce the dependence of band edges on lattice deformation computed using DFT. The Coulomb matrix elements for CI are obtained with TB wave functions involving ~108 orbitals, with on-site and nearest-neighbour terms computed by approximating the TB basis with Slater orbitals. In the CI step, typically ~104 configurations are used as a basis for each multi-exciton system, while emission spectra are calculated from Fermi’s Golden Rule. We illustrate the method by computing the electronic and optical properties of a lens-shaped and discshaped InAs/InP/GaAs SAD using the VFF approach for 100s of millions of atoms, the 20-band sp3d5s* tight-binding model for millions of atoms and energies, states and emission spectra from up to ten multiexciton complexes obtained in the configuration-interaction method1724.mp4 michal-zielinski.mp
