Quality Teacher Professional Development at Scale: Policy Considerations for the Next Decade in Africa [White Paper]

No full text
This White Paper looks to provide African governments with a series of calls to action and policy considerations, to build momentum on the progress already made in teacher professional development (TPD) across the continent over the last 25 years. They are designed to help African countries make further steps to “improve teacher policies, education, professional development, and accountability”, a key objective outlined in the African Union’s (2025) “Continental Education Strategy for Africa, 2026-2035”. This will ensure that teachers are equipped with relevant skills, vital for the future economic and social prosperity of both their own individual countries and the African continent. The calls to action and policy considerations draw from research evidence from across the continent, a survey completed by 163 teacher education stakeholders (government officials, university academics and teacher educators, as well as teacher unions and international partners) spanning 36 countries, and the testimonies of teacher educators from 12 African countries. Overarching call to action: Ministries of education and authorities regulating teaching should prioritize the updating and implementation of teacher education legislation, frameworks, policies and strategies, and institutionalize periodic monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to hold implementers accountable. This builds on one of the recommendations from the UNESCO World Summit on Teachers “Santiago Consensus” (2025) which focuses on implementation

Curriculum design

No full text
Framed by notions of language and what language education aims to achieve, this chapter explores issues around curriculum design for language learning. It asks what language learners may want to communicate and to whom, and how we can establish a framework which will support the development of understanding and competencies that are relevant in a global society. The chapter looks at current practice in UK Higher Education and discusses how language curricula are influenced by trends and policies, and further shaped by documents such as the revised Common European Framework, which is now taking account of mediation skills and plurilingual practices. In a case study, it critically explores the introduction and continued development of a new curriculum framework at the UK’s largest university, The Open University, between 2014 and 2023. Key issues include static versus more process-oriented approaches to curriculum design, the integration of a wide range of skills into language curricula, ongoing discussions around ‘content’ and ‘language’ teaching in Higher Education, and the inclusion of learners’ plurilingual repertoires. The strive to ‘decolonise the curriculum’ is highly pertinent for languages provisions and it seems essential to reflect on what languages are being offered and for what purpose, in what ways the field could and should be made more interdisciplinary and how diversity can be built into the curriculum itself

From intellectual capital to sustainability performance: an interventionist research approach to management control

No full text
Purpose This study aims to investigate the relationship between intellectual capital (IC) and sustainability in practice by developing and testing a management control tool to enhance sustainability through IC. The case tested is a publicly listed Italian information technology company. Design/methodology/approach Employing an interventionist research approach, the authors actively participated in a team tasked with designing a new IC reporting system. The methods of inquiry included in-depth interviews with project stakeholders and reviewing internal documents to offer a critical and performative analysis of IC practices in action. The resulting analysis led to the development of a new management control tool. Findings The management control tool developed in collaboration with the company not only significantly enhanced sustainability performance, it also fostered integrated thinking. Specifically, the tool helped to identify, measure and monitor firm-specific IC, including skills and competencies, knowledge and innovation, values, legitimacy, trust and reputation. Originality/value The findings contribute to the ongoing discourse on IC practices. Through new insights into the practical relationship between IC and sustainability, this paper affirms IC’s significance to businesses that want to improve their sustainability. The study also presents a methodical approach to integrating sustainability thinking into corporate practices, adding to the limited literature on how management control systems can promote corporate sustainability

The ideation of final year undergraduate project topics as a creative process: the case of a distance-learning engineering module

No full text
At The Open University in the UK, final year engineering undergraduates are required to suggest a topic for their project. As this study considers this process to be creative, the three-component model by Amabile was used to support the conclusion that instructional material aiding the exploration of the idea space should be improved. To do this, an online ideation toolkit was developed to help with the generation and focusing of possible project topics and was trialled on a small number of students together with an introductory workshop. The results of studying its usefulness, using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, showed that most students benefitted from the workshop in its own right. Others, who took the time to work through the toolkit in their own time, found that the toolkit indeed helped them with project topic ideation and focusing their ideas. The students’ main concern was that they lacked guidance as to the project level. The findings suggest that the development of creative thinking skills in students, one of the three components in Amabile’s model, should be more explicitly included in the engineering project module studied here
