Introduction to <i>The Law Teacher</i> special issue on “New Trends in Teaching Contract Law"
The eight articles collected in this special issue on “New Trends in Teaching Contract Law” demonstrate that, despite being a core first-year module with large student numbers, contract law is a remarkably fertile ground for innovation in teaching and learning. This special issue contributes to a range of broader academic discussions on topics such as active learning, authentic assessment and visualisation techniques, framing those discussions in the context of contract law across different jurisdictions and teaching traditions, and the challenges of large group teaching specifically. Amidst unprecedented change both on and off the university campus, the subject of contract law is a constant where lasting innovations could be developed. We hope that the current selection of eight papers will provide food for thought for law teachers of contract and other large core modules in the English curriculum, and some of the ideas presented here may stimulate colleagues well beyond the core curriculum
Values, emotions and views of the future: democratic deliberation as pathway to inner transformation
Visons of the future are fundamental for achieving transformational socio-environmental change. Whilst a host of methods have been developed for creating future visions and reflecting on underlying values of nature, we examine under-researched aspects of future creation and value reflection. We explore how deliberative democratic processes, illustrated by a case study of citizen panels deliberating on treescapes in three United Kingdom cities, can serve to influence people’s subjective views of the future, with particular attention to the role of values and emotions. The deliberation on values and visions was guided by the IPBES Life Framework. Our findings suggest that these workshops influence the richness and degree of optimism and concern in participants’ views of the future through several mechanisms, including the reinforcement of relevant values and emotions. Our findings contribute to a deeper understanding of future making, its motivational consequences, and the importance of citizen workshops as a pathway to inner transformation

Surrendering to Death and Its Aftermath: Conceptual Explorations in the Era of Coloniality/Modernity
We focus in this chapter on aspects of decolonising death and its continuing aftermath in the lives of the living – often referred to through the English terms of ‘bereavement and grief’. Here we hone in on the significance of particular words/concepts, the building blocks for constructing particular versions of the world, framing lived experiences and theoretical models. Extending our previous work, we explore our lived experiences bound up with our diverse intersectional heritages in the United Kingdom, through the collaborative conversational auto-ethnographic methodology we have been developing. In our explorations here, we focus particularly on the terms ‘acceptance’ and ‘surrender’ along with their potential counterparts of ‘denial’ and ‘resistance’. We ruminate on their nuances and meanings along with their ontological underpinnings, and reflect on their relevance or otherwise in regard to our personal lived experiences of significant deaths. While ‘acceptance’ is framed as a key ‘task’ or ‘stage’ of ‘the grief process’ in currently dominant models emanating from Minority Worlds, in the face of existential threats, these discourses of coloniality/modernity are revealed as deeply inadequate, offering little onto-epistemological capacity for meaning-making in response to our experiences of profoundly difficult deaths. Further, while indigenous philosophical thinking draws attention to the implications of ‘wording’ the world in the era of coloniality/modernity, it also suggests central questions about the possibilities of words/concepts for decolonising work at all, thus highlighting the limitations of our endeavours here in seeking to de-centre dominant Minority World language and models of death and its aftermath
Raptorness: the "bodies" of humans becoming-with birds of prey in the art and archaeology of early medieval England
In this article I consider several instances in which the body parts of birds of prey, namely talons, were brought into relation-ship with the bodies of humans in both cremation and inhumation funerary settings. Certain objects decorated with imagery including raptor body parts, namely square-headed brooches, were also brought into relationship with the bodies of humans and body parts of raptors in inhumations specifically. Raptor body parts, images of raptors and the objects they decorated were being treated like human bodies in ways that challenge speciesist distinctions and anthropocentrism, and boundaries between living beings and objects outside of modern mechanistic accounts of the body and humanistic conceptions of the subject/object divide. Drawing upon multispecies, relational and new materialist thinking, I argue that the evidence is suggestive of ontological contiguities between humans, animals and objects and also explore how these human, raptor and object intersections may articulate different forms of human-raptor sociality over time in early medieval England
A Near-Earth Object Model Calibrated to Earth Impactors
The population of Earth-impacting meteoroids and their size-dependent orbital elements are key to understanding the origin of meteorites and informing planetary defense efforts. Outstanding questions include the role of collisions in depleting meteoroids on highly evolved orbits and the relative importance of delivery resonances. Those depend on size, with current dynamical models considering only asteroids larger than 10 m in diameter. Based on 1202 sporadic meteoroids observed by the Global Fireball Observatory, we created a debiased model of the near-Earth meteoroid population in the 10 g–150 kg size range (approximately 1 cm–0.5 m in diameter) as they dynamically evolved from the main asteroid belt onto Earth-crossing orbits. The observed impact population is best matched with a collisional half-life decreasing from 3 Myr for meteoroids of 0.6 kg (7 cm) or higher to 1 Myr below this size, extending to the model lower bound of 10 g. Placing our results in context with near-Earth object models for larger sizes, we find that the inner main belt continues to dominate feeding the small 1–10 m diameter population primarily via the ν6 secular resonance and the 3:1J mean-motion resonance. We also evaluated the potential significance of physical processes other than collisions on Earth-impacting meteoroids, such as low-perihelion disruptions from thermal stresses
Is Alternative Care on the Violence Against Children Agenda? A Review of Pledges Made at the 1st Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children
In 2024, the 1st Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children (VAC) brought together 103 governments to make formal commitments to prevent and respond to VAC. This review analyses the pledges announced at the time of the conference, while acknowledging that some governments may have subsequently refined or expanded their commitments, as noted in the limitations. With a focus on how alternative care, family strengthening and family-based care feature within broader VAC strategies. Recognising that violence is both a driver for entry into care and a significant factor within care systems, the review explores trends, gaps and emerging priorities across national contexts. It identifies where countries have made explicit commitments to care reform, highlights financial and accountability mechanisms, and considers the implications for children in alternative care. The findings underscore the need to integrate care reform as a central pillar in efforts to end VAC globally
Instilling Fear in The Marketplace: An Institutional Mechanism of Marketplace Discrimination
Little is known about the political and sociocultural marketplace aspects of collective fear and how policymakers and other market actors contribute to its development. To better understand this undertheorized area, we draw on archival data to show how UK politicians, journalists, and retailers constructed three racially stigmatizing fear narratives targeting Romanian immigrant consumers. Building on our findings, we offer a practical guide for policy makers, journalists, and marketers on how to reduce racially charged marketplace discrimination by disengaging in creating and circulating narratives of collective fear
Qualifying optical biometry data before cataract surgery using autoencoders
Purpose
To develop, implement and demonstrate a data driven strategy to identify ‘suspects’ and ‘outliers’ in datasets of biometric measurements taken before cataract surgery.
Methods
A shallow autoencoder with one hidden layer and 3 neurons was trained on a large multicentre dataset (N = 152,397, 9 clinical centres) from the IOLMaster 700 including axial length (AL), central corneal thickness (CCT), anterior chamber depth (ACD), lens thickness (LT) and corneal front surface radius (R). Measurements were identified as ‘suspects’ or ‘outliers’ depending on the mean squared prediction error. Training was performed on 7 of the 9 datasets, and the remaining 2 datasets were used to evaluate the performance of the autoencoder.
Results
Crossvalidation proved that the autoencoder with 3 neurons showed no noticeable overfitting. Measurements were marked as ’suspects’ or ’outliers’ based on the 95% and 99% quantiles as derived from the mean squared error with the training data. After piecewise linear correction of the autoencoder prediction error to correct for trend errors probably due to internal calibrations of the biometer, the autoencoder successfully identified potentially faulty measurements for the 2 test datasets.
Conclusions
Autoencoders are quite popular for different application fields in engineering, and could also help in ophthalmology to identify potentially faulty biometric measurements which could lead to refractive surprises if used for intraocular lens power calculation. Further studies are required to validate this concept with other parameters or datasets from other biometers
