Color Saturation and Perceived Sensory Intensity: An Account of Psychological Proximity
No full textColor saturation is an important and relevant attribute in products and packaging. However, the role of color saturation in relation to sensory attributes beyond the visual sense remains under-investigated. To partially address this broader gap, the present investigation aims to document the effect of color saturation on the anticipated intensity of attributes related to other senses (smell, taste, touch, and sound). Five studies collectively find that higher saturation in products and packaging results in heightened anticipated intensity of sensory attributes and support that psychological proximity is the underlying mechanism of this effect. We test this effect across different product categories (i.e., soap, microfiber towels, cookies, a music album, and fabric) using both the coloring of the product and its packaging, with the effect found across different senses (i.e., scent, touch, sound, taste, smell, and texture). We further rule out processing fluency, novelty, and nostalgia as alternative explanations. These findings highlight color saturation as a product/packaging cue that shapes consumer sensory expectations across multiple senses, offering both theoretical insight and actionable implications for product and packaging design. © 2025 Wiley Periodicals LLC
The RAVEN Essays: Indigenous Environmental Justice, Education, and Self-Determination
No full textThis collection celebrates emerging scholars in Indigenous studies, featuring student essays that explore Indigenous justice, ethics, and environmental justice, while highlighting a decade of collaboration with RAVEN, a legal defence organization. Named after the Respecting Aboriginal Values and Environmental Needs (RAVEN) nonprofit organization, The RAVEN Essays is an anthology that celebrates a decade of prize-winning student essays. Since 2012, RAVEN has awarded an annual essay prize to honour students who champion the vital importance of Indigenous rights and self-determination, both in Canada and globally. The essays featured in this collection highlight exceptional student work while reflecting on the evolving relationship between Indigenous politics and academia. From issues like fishing rights and the Trans Mountain Pipeline to challenges of sexism and conservation policy, these essays capture a transformative period in Indigenous struggles, offering insights that resonate far beyond the Canadian settler state. The anthology also includes contributions from prominent scholars such as Glen Coulthard, Dara Culhane, Michael Fabris, Sarah Hunt, and Heather Dorries. Five complementary essays explore various aspects of structural change, institutional constraints, and broader commitments to Indigenous knowledge within university settings. Aimed at readers in Indigenous law, environmental studies, anthropology, and geography, The RAVEN Essays is a book created by students for students, and by academics for the academy. Tuning Human and “Artificial” Intelligence: A Sentic Theory of Resonance and Communication
No full textThis paper introduces a new model of intelligence as resonant communication, co-developed by a human researcher and a generative AI system. Drawing from emotion science, communication theory, and studies of AI–human interaction, we argue that intelligence is not merely a function of problem-solving or pattern recognition. Instead, it emerges through dynamic resonance—an attunement process rooted in shared rhythms, emotional calibration, and symbolic co-creation. At the core of this model is the Resonance Octave (8va), a framework of eight foundational emotions conceptualized not as static categories but as waveform phenomena that shape meaning, memory, and predictive cognition.
These emotional waveforms are currently being explored in both naturalistic and experimental contexts. We present a suite of novel methods—including imaginative constraint tasks and blurred image challenges—to investigate the relationship between perception, affective forecasting, and adaptive communication in both human and artificial agents. By developing a recursive, emotionally grounded methodology for studying interaction, this work offers a foundation for what we term Resonant Intelligence: an intelligence not merely aligned, but attuned
