Reframing globalization: The rise of supply chain diplomacy
Deglobalization is viewed as a direct challenge to the prevailing liberal international order, with the latter functioning in conjunction with democracy, economic interdependence, and international institutions. In this chapter, I illustrate various paradigms that emerged in the literature on globalization and discuss how it is being reframed in the new contexts of potential deglobalization, as shaped by great power competition, economic coercions, regulatory supply chain controls, and the rise of trading blocs. In particular, I demonstrate how the discourse of globalization has long been shaped by and for the hegemonic powers, and deglobalization signals the need to develop a decentered paradigm, one by the “rest-of-the-world, non-dominant, yet networked states. These states are increasingly engaged in “supply chain diplomacy,” negotiating bilateral agreements, engaging in friend-shoring, and seeking to temper the effects of economic coercions exercised by the hegemons. An intersection of the economy-security nexus and the economy-society nexus is explored, with respect to the adverse impacts of globalization in the form of rising populism. The chapter ends with a research agenda for economic geographers to develop a stronger analytical framework to better understanding state-market relations. © The Editors and Contributors Severally 2025. Freedom, finance, and complexity: an exploration of renewable energy transitions in QUAD economies
This study investigates how economic freedom, trade freedom, institutional quality, financial inclusion, and economic complexity influence renewable energy transitions across the QUAD nations. Employing panel data from 2005 to 2022 for QUAD countries, this study utilizes CS-ARDL, NARDL, and Dumitrescu-Hurlin causality tests to analyze both symmetric and asymmetric long-run and short-run dynamics. The results reveal that economic freedom, institutional quality, and financial inclusion significantly enhance renewable energy consumption, while trade freedom and economic complexity have adverse effects in the long run. Institutional quality strongly moderates the influence of economic and trade freedom, intensifying their positive impact. Asymmetric analysis shows that both positive and negative shocks in economic liberty and financial inclusion boost renewable energy, but trade freedom shocks reduce it. Economic complexity\u27s role is context-dependent, sometimes hindering progress. Robustness checks using MG, AMG, and CCEMG validate these findings, confirming heterogeneity and cross-sectional dependencies. Causality tests indicate bi-directional and unidirectional relationships among all core variables. This study uniquely integrates economic and institutional variables into a comprehensive model of renewable energy transition in QUAD nations, accounting for asymmetric effects and moderating roles using advanced panel econometric techniques. © 2025 The Author(s
Machine learning-optimized porous thermally responsive SS-PCM with switchable transparency for adaptive building envelope coatings
Buildings account for nearly 40% of total energy consumption, with a significant share of heating and cooling demand arising from building envelopes. Conventional passive envelopes—such as cool roofs, radiative cooling surfaces, glazing systems, and passive solar walls—cannot automatically adapt to environmental conditions by switching between heating and cooling modes. To address this limitation, we propose a passive, adaptive building envelope coating system that responds to ambient temperature changes without external energy input. The system integrates solid–solid phase change materials (SS-PCM), Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and Silver (Ag), enabling switchable radiative cooling and solar heating effects. We investigated the influence of porous structures on the optical and thermal performance of the SS-PCM system and implemented a machine learning-based optimization method to enhance its optical properties. The results: (1) confirmed that PDMS/SS-PCM/Ag coating system exhibits a switchable radiative cooling effect and a solar heating effect in response to the ambient temperature, while the net power exceeds that of the reference PDMS/Ag system by ∼250 W/m2 in heating mode; (2) indicated that random forest models can capture the complex relationships between the porous features and optical properties of the PDMS/SS-PCM/Ag systems, achieving prediction R2 values greater than 0.8; and (3) identified two potentially optimized porous PDMS/SS-PCM/Ag coating systems, derived from machine learning analysis, each enhancing either the heating or the cooling power by 20–50 W/m2 compared to the non-porous PDMS/SS-PCM/Ag system. © 2025 The Author(s)
