Dissecting the function of the DNMT2-homolog (DNMA) in Dictyostelium discoideum
Methylation of cytosine residues in nucleic acids plays a critical role in a range of biological activities in eukaryotes, including regulation of transcription, organization of chromatin structure, modulation of translation, cellular differentiation, and development. While much of the scientific focus in this field was centered on DNA methylation over the past few decades, it has also become clear that methylation of RNA is a crucial modification. A group of homologous DNMT2 methyltransferase enzymes in different model organisms are now known to catalyze the transfer of a methyl group to the cytosine at position 38 in tRNAAspGUC molecules. The important biological role for tRNA methyltransferases is highlighted by the fact that the genomes of some model eukaryotes, including Dictyostelium discoideum, Drosophila melanogaster, Entamoeba histolytica, and Schizosaccharomyces pombe, possess a DNMT2 homolog but do not encode any other enzymes of the DNMT family. In this study, we explore the function of the DNMT2 homolog (DNMA) in D. discoideum by examining the phenotypic effects resulting from deletion of this enzyme. Pleiotropic impacts on cell growth, morphology and motility, nuclear organization, and disruption to the developmental program are detected. We also analyze global gene expression in the dnmA knock-out cells and develop a homology-based structural model of DNMA, allowing us to perform docking simulations of the molecular interaction with tRNAAspGUC. Our findings demonstrate that DNMA, as a tRNA methyltransferase, is critical to normal cellular activity and development in Dictyostelium. © The Author(s) 2025. \u27The Goddard Rocket Researches: A Photographic Record\u27 is an annotated photo album covering Robert H. Goddard\u27s work and experimentation with rocketry. It was assembled and curated by Esther Goddard sometime after her husband\u27s passing in 1945.
The vast majority of these photographs were taken by Esther herself. Esther was an avid camerawoman and photographer, and during Robert\u27s lifetime she meticulously documented his life\u27s work in rocketry--from experiments and instruments to processes and workspaces. In his book Rocket Man: Robert H. Goddard and the Birth of the Space Age, David A. Clary states that Esther became a pioneer in photographic documentation of technology, taking pictures of tests and flights--including deriving stills from movies--and illustrating Robert\u27s notes with detailed photographs of everything manufactured in the shop and assembled into rockets . Esther also shot 16mm film footage when Robert bought her a movie camera in 1926. That footage can be seen here.
Following Robert\u27s death in 1945, Esther dedicated the rest of her life to relentlessly crafting and promoting the legend and reputation of Robert’s life and work. This element of careful curation can be seen in this photo album, both in its construction and the classification system present in the bottom right of each photograph.

Implementing and Adjusting Project-Based Inquiry in a Secondary English Language Arts Classroom
Student engagement is key to academic achievement. Research shows that, among other factors, choice, a sense of autonomy, and shared decision-making contribute to increased engagement. Both project-based learning (PBL) and inquiry learning (IL) constitute two approaches to curriculum and instruction that stemfrom the belief that active involvement in learning facilitates student engagement and combine to form project-based inquiry (PBI) -a process that centers around phases starting with developing a compelling question and ending with a means for sharing or publishing the answers to the question. This combination served as the impetus for the author, as a high school English Language Arts (ELA) teacher, to introduce a yearlong inquiry project into 11th-grade classes. This study uses a teacher research design to document the author\u27s efforts as a secondary ELA teacher to introduce and then refine an inquiry project over several years. Findings related to scaffolding meaningful research skills and cultivating a sense of ownership over project topics will be discussed. © 2026, IGI Global Scientific Publishing. All rights reserved
High-resolution spatial modeling of household lawn fertilizer behavior: Implications for targeting nitrogen-reduction programs
Residential lawns cover a substantial area within urbanized regions and household fertilizer applications represent a major nonpoint source of nitrogen pollution. This paper develops a novel methodology for an integrated model that produces parcel-level, large-scale predictions of residential lawn fertilizer use and corresponding nitrogen applications. An illustrative application of this methodology is provided for Connecticut coastal counties within the Long Island Sound watershed to allow the comparison of targeting strategies for nitrogen fertilizer-reduction programs. A two-part hurdle regression model of household lawn fertilizer behavior is estimated using household survey data. Hurdle model estimation results are then used to predict lawn-fertilizer behavior for all single-family households in the region (N = 431,349) based on observable property characteristics and household demographics. Predictions integrate model results with high-resolution land cover data to identify lawn footprints and a simulation procedure to incorporate demographic information for households that were not in the survey sample, thereby producing parcel-level estimates of nitrogen applied to lawns. The effectiveness of nitrogen-reduction scenarios is compared for the optimal, simple rule-based, and municipal-level targeting strategies. Large variations in fertilizer and nitrogen applications exist over household types and municipalities. The majority of predicted nitrogen application is due to a small subpopulation of households, primarily parcels with newer, larger homes on large exurban lots. Results demonstrate that targeting strategies play a key role in the potential effectiveness of nitrogen-reduction programs. Findings such as these illustrate the insights for policy guidance that can be provided through integrated approaches that predict household-level fertilizer use across the landscape. © 2025 Elsevier Lt
Do Active Sustainable Equity Funds Outperform Their Passive Peers? Evidence from the COVID-19 Pandemic
Sustainable investing has grown rapidly, but it remains unclear whether actively managed sustainable funds outperform passive ones. This study compares the performance of high-sustainable active U.S. equity mutual funds and their index peers from September 2018 to April 2022, dividing the period into pre-crash, crash, and post-crash phases around the COVID-19 market downturn. On average, both active and index funds underperform, with the sharpest losses occurring during the crash. High-sustainable funds outperform low-sustainable ones, particularly during the crash. However, high-sustainable active funds do not outperform their passive counterparts in any period. These results suggest that active management does not offer greater downside protection and raise questions about the higher fees typically charged by actively managed sustainable funds. © 2025 by the authors
