    Dipolar bosons in a twisted bilayer geometry

    In recent years, twisted bilayer systems such as bilayer graphene attracted a great deal of attention as the twist angle introduced a degree of freedom which can be used to nontrivially modify system properties. This idea has been picked up in the cold atom community, first with a theoretical proposal to simulate twisted bilayers in state-dependent optical lattices, and, more recently, with an experimental realization of twisted bilayers with bosonic atoms in two different spin states. In this article, we theoretically investigate dipolar bosons in a twisted bilayer geometry. The interplay between dipolar interaction and the twist between the layers results in the emergence of quantum states not observed in the absence of twist. We study how system properties vary as we change the twist angle at fixed distance between the layers and fixed dipolar interaction. We find that at a twist angle θ=0.1∘, the observed quantum phases are consistent with those seen in the absence of twist angle, i.e., paired superfluid, paired supersolid, and paired solid phases. However, a slight increase in the twist angle to θ=0.2∘ disrupts these paired phases in favor of a phase separation between checkerboard solid and superfluid regions. Notably, at a twist angle of θ=5.21∘, the local occupation number follows the moiré pattern of the underlying moiré bilayers so that a periodic structure of insulating islands is formed.     Ubuntu in Namibia and Kenya: How Emerging Adults Live an Essential African Value Today

    Psychology in Africa often relies on Euro-American theories, despite their limitations in African cultures. Here, a shift to an Afrocentric perspective was made by exploring Ubuntu in two sub-Saharan African countries using a cultural-developmental psychology approach for in-depth emic understanding. Ubuntu (also known as botho, etc.) is a moral ideal that at core means placing a higher importance on the community than on oneself. Most literature on this important African concept has been theoretical rather than empirical, and little is known about how well it describes contemporary worldviews and experiences of emerging adults. In this interview study, Namibian and Kenyan emerging adults (ages 18–20 years, N = 23) shared their views on, identification with, and behaviors shaped by Ubuntu values. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to develop four themes that convey the advantages and disadvantages described: I am because I am connected; Together we do better; Following and passing on traditions; and Costs of community—freeloaders and restrictions. Findings support the theoretical literature on Ubuntu while contributing the voices of a new generation, coming of age into a mix of tradition and globalization. Participants identified strongly with Ubuntu values and practiced them in old and new ways. They also sometimes desired more autonomy in the realms of education and spirituality. This empirical study on Ubuntu offers insights into the lived experience of a philosophy and values of ongoing importance in the African region and sets the stage for a research agenda to integrate this important construct into cross-cultural psychology. © The Author(s) 2025

    DV Emotion Net: A Sub-Study on Emotion Detection Model Performance Across P100, T4, and TPU VM V3-8

    This study evaluates the performance of different hardware configurations-GPU P100, GPU T4, and TPU VM v3-8-in the context of emotion detection using the DV EmotionNet framework. Building on prior research that integrates audio and video modalities for emotion recognition, the analysis explores how each hardware setup influences model efficiency and accuracy. Audio features were extracted using techniques such as energy, zero crossing rate, and Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC), while video features were obtained through spatial-temporal Gaussian kernels and Gaussian-weighted functions applied to the second momentum matrix. The Multimodal Feature Aggregation (MFA) method was employed to fuse the audio and video features, creating a comprehensive dataset. The evaluation utilized the Fusion of Emotion Recognition Convolutional Neural Network (FERCNN) model, focusing on the impact of accelerators on performance metrics. Recent advancements often face challenges like high computational costs, scalability issues, and sensitivity to noisy data. This study addresses these challenges by systematically evaluating the computational efficiency and accuracy trade-offs across different hardware accelerators. Results from the RAVDESS and CREMAD datasets revealed notable differences in accuracy, with the P100 demonstrating superior performance on simpler tasks, while TPU VM v3-8 excelled in more complex scenarios. These findings highlight the significance of hardware choice in optimizing multimodal emotion recognition systems, reinforcing the critical role of effective computational resources in enhancing applications across various domains, including human-computer interaction, healthcare, and entertainment. © 2025 IEEE

    Interstate conflicts with multiple fronts

    This paper analyzes an interstate-conflict model in which two states compete for supporters in the governance of a territory on two socioeconomically linked fronts: soft (for example, media persuasion, propaganda) and hard (for example, annexation, invasion). Supporters enjoy an ego premium when their ideological alignment on the soft front matches the outcome on the hard front. A state’s total gain from a conflict is the difference between the economic gains from the hard front and the cost of forming ideological preferences on the soft front. We propose four scenarios based on the relative size of the ego premium and provide intuition on how competition on the soft front becomes widespread. We explore the implications of the model in the context of the Russian–Ukrainian war. © The Author(s) 2025

    A comprehensive framework for evaluating ecosystem quality changes and human activity contributions in Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang, China

    Human activities increasingly shape ecosystems, raising critical questions about sustainability and the trade-offs between ecosystem quality and ecosystem services. This study develops a comprehensive framework to evaluate ecosystem quality change (KEQI) changes driven by land use land cover (LULC) shifts and human activities (HA), along with their impacts on ecosystem service values (ESV) in Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang, two ecologically significant regions in China. The framework integrates five analytical approaches: (i) analyzing LULC dynamics using the Land Change Modeler for Ecological Sustainability (LCMES) and hotspot analysis to identify areas of significant change; (ii) assessing LULC impacts on ecosystem services values using remote sensing data; (iii) separating human activities and climate change contributions through improved residual trend analysis and pixel-based partial correlation coefficients; (iv) evaluating KEQI changes via retention rates and the Ecological Quality Change Rate; and (v) exploring relationships among KEQI, LULC, HA, and ESV using curve-fitting linear regression. The study reveals notable land-use changes, with croplands, grasslands, and urban areas expanding at the cost of bare land, driven largely by human activities, accounting for 93 % in Inner Mongolia and 89 % in Xinjiang. Regions dominated by human activities observe significant KEQI improvements, with values increasing by 13.5–16.6, particularly in Inner Mongolia. However, these improvements often coincided with declining ESV, notably grasslands in Inner Mongolia (-4.92 %) and croplands in Xinjiang. Some areas showed modest ESV increases (+0.88 %). This study underscores the intricate balance between HA, KEQI, and ESV, offering critical insights for sustainable land management in China. Policymakers can use these findings to manage land-use transitions better, align human activities with conservation goals, and promote ecosystem resilience amidst escalating land-use pressures

    Secondary Traumatic Stress Among Teachers: The Impact of Race and Years of Teaching Experiences

    Secondary traumatic stress (STS) can impact teachers who are supporting students exposed to trauma. STS is associated with teacher burnout, but little research is available about certain demographic factors among teachers that can make some more susceptible than others, such as race and years of teaching. The purpose of this study was to examine racial differences and years of teaching among educators working in a majority Black student school system. Findings suggested there was no relationship between years of teaching and STS. However, the results indicated that White teachers reported higher levels of STS than reports by Black teachers

    Power and resistance: Black Americans\u27 multifaceted perceptions of ingroup strengths and their effects on collective efficacy and resistance

    The current research examines perceived ingroup strengths and their relationship with collective efficacy, generalized power, and resistance among Black Americans. Two studies investigated how different perceptions of ingroup strengths (e.g. collective resilience, ingroup solidarity, intergroup coalitions, ingroup resistance, and intergroup respect) were associated with generalized power perceptions, perceived collective efficacy, and resistance behaviours. Study 1 demonstrated that collective resilience, ingroup solidarity, and intergroup coalitions predicted increased collective efficacy, which in turn predicted organized resistance but not everyday resistance. Perceived control over resources and influence predicted generalized power but not resistance behaviours. Study 2 extended these findings by including perceived ingroup resistance and intergroup respect. Ingroup resistance and intergroup respect predicted collective efficacy, which mediated their effects on both organized and everyday resistance. Unlike in Study 1, collective resilience, ingroup solidarity, and intergroup coalitions had no significant effects on collective efficacy in Study 2, though ingroup solidarity directly predicted organized resistance. Generalized power perceptions were linked to lower everyday resistance. These findings highlight the complex interplay between different perceived ingroup strengths and their distinct roles in fostering collective efficacy and resistance against racial oppression
