Physiological responses of the American lobster cardiovascular system to neuropeptide SGRNFLRFamide (SGRN)
During every second of a human’s life, the cardiovascular system is modulated by factors both intrinsic and extrinsic to the physiology of the heart. We can uncover new insights regarding the nature of our system through investigations of similar systems in other model species. One example materializes itself in the form of the American Lobster (Homarus americanus) whose single-chambered heart finds resemblance to the function and anatomy to that of humans. The lobster heart is powered by the cardiac ganglion (CG), a group of neurons that drive contractions of surrounding heart muscles, known as the myocardium. Both the CG and myocardium work in a feedback loop, with both intrinsic (afterload and preload) and extrinsic (temperature and neuropeptides) factors affecting cardiac output (CO) or the overall ability of the heart to carry out its primary function of nutrient distribution. In this paper, we examine how the addition of these factors into in vitro whole heart preparations affect CO and other associated variables. From experimentation, we conclude that the neuropeptide SGRNFLRFamide (SGRN) increases the heartbeat frequency and the active force exerted by the heart. We also conclude that increases in temperature decrease CO as higher temperatures decrease heartbeat frequency and the active force exerted by the heart. Lastly, we conclude that the effect of preload and afterload combined produce more robust effects on the CO and active force of the heart, potentially painting a better picture of what may happen in vivo
Racial Bias within Capital Punishment: Instructional Comprehension
This dissertation examines the existence of racial bias within capital punishment. Since colonial times discriminatory death sentencing has impacted racial minorities, and despite living in a post-colonial epoch, the United States Justice system continues to produce alarming racial disparities. Consequently, both law reviews and social science journals indicate that race remains a significant factor in criminal trials. So, to what extent does racial bias influence capital punishment trials? Given that it does exist, how can it be alleviated? Through a statistical/qualitative analysis of psychological studies, Supreme Court cases, and jury instructions, this dissertation suggests that implicit cognitive bias continues to produce daunting realities in contemporary criminal punishment processes. Notably among juries, traditional judicial procedures have ostensibly triggered implicit bias and psychological intimidation, i.e. jury instructions. Moreover, do long and complicated jury instructions heighten instances of partial judgment? In Racial Bias within Capital Punishment: Instructional Comprehension, I argue that inaccessible jury instructions provide a space where jurors adhere to subtle racial preferences. Consequently, the swaying capacity of juries in capital punishment trials proceeds to arbitrarily produce discrepancies in sentencing rates
Statistically Principled Deep Learning for SAR Image Segmentation
This project explores novel approaches for Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image segmentation that integrate established statistical properties of SAR into deep learning models. First, Perlin Noise and Generalized Gamma distribution sampling methods were utilized to generate a synthetic dataset that effectively captures the statistical attributes of SAR data. Subsequently, deep learning segmentation architectures were developed that utilize average pooling and 1x1 convolutions to perform statistical moment computations. Finally, supervised and unsupervised disparity-based losses were incorporated into model training. The experimental outcomes yielded promising results: the synthetic dataset effectively trained deep learning models for real SAR data segmentation, the statistically-informed architectures demonstrated comparable or superior performance to benchmark models, and the unsupervised disparity-based loss facilitated the delineation of regions within the SAR data. These findings indicate that employing statistically-informed deep learning methodologies could enhance SAR image analysis, with broader implications for various remote sensing applications and the general field of computer vision. Reframing Mourning: Liberatory Grief in Post-Tragedy Chinese American Women’s Fiction
My project approaches discussions of Asian American melancholia and mourning with a specific focus on contemporary Chinese American women’s fiction. Scholars such as David Eng, Shinhee Han, and Anne Anlin Cheng have long spotlighted the prevalence of depression among Asian American populations, particularly those with immigrant backgrounds, and they variously adopt psychoanalytic approaches to understand Asian American mental health and intersectional identities. Looking beyond psychoanalytic models, my project focuses on the works of Yiyun Li, Jenny Zhang, and K-Ming Chang to explore diverse forms of post-tragedy positionality. I read the authors paratextually, not only to locate them within legacies of diasporic fiction and intersectional auto-writing but also to highlight their critically self-reflexive authorship. I study novels and characters depicting complex processes of mourning, ultimately proposing a reading that views them not only as resisting complete recovery but as forging pathways toward liberatory grief
Identity Formation in the Lebanese-American Christian Diaspora
Since the late 1800s, people have immigrated to the United states from Lebanon and Syria, and the community’s racial and ethnic position within the United States has been contested ever since. Previous research emphasizes that while people from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are legally classified as “white” on the U.S. Census. However, many people from the region do not identify as white, and they often face discrimination or threats of violence. For people of Arab and Christian backgrounds this is further complicated because they are a part of the majority through their religion, but part of a minority through their ethnic background. In addition, media depictions of MENAs tend to be homogenizing and stereotypical. This thesis attempts to fill a gap in literature on Christian Lebanese American identities by conducting ethnographic interviews with Lebanese-Americans from a variety of generations. It pulls from theories of diaspora and race, emphasizing the importance of context and migration trajectories when understanding Lebanese American identities. My findings demonstrate wide-ranging diversity in how Christian Lebanese-Americans understand and articulate identity due to three major factors: divergent migrant pathways in multiple countries, generational difference given changing racial politics in the U.S., and generational difference given the impacts of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East upon young Lebanese-Americans

Modeling the Development & Expression of Political Opinion: A Zallerian Approach
Research focused on John Zaller\u27s famous RAS model of political opinion formation and change from The Nature and Origins of Mass Opinion (1992). Analyzed the mathematical and psychological underpinnings of the model, the first paper to do so in over fifteen years and the first to do so through an analysis of motivated reasoning and Bayesian reasoning. Synthesized existing critiques of Zaller\u27s model and other literature to suggest ways to build on Zaller, utilizing fundamental reunderstandings of opinions and messages from political and mathematical perspectives. Found verification for Zaller\u27s model, confirming its value, but also found support for the proposed RAIS model, which suggests foundational changes in the way citizens interact with information in the current political environment. Confirmed the utility of a Zallerian framework for analyzing shifts in mass opinion over time and suggested ways to improve the creation of surveys and polls for understanding elections and reported opinions on issues
Being and Salvation: Environmental Implications of Martin Heidegger\u27s Thought
This thesis explores the possibility for environmental interpretations of Martin Heidegger’s philosophy. Much of Heidegger’s work, especially his later thought which receives particular attention in this thesis, elucidates the effects of technology upon man. As a result, Heidegger has been linked to environmental thought with a surprising frequency given that his work itself is not environmentalist per se. Many environmental thinkers who would coopt Heidegger for their own thought do so without proper consideration of the source material. I examine several of Heidegger’s essays with an environmental lens to uncover the extent to which his work may constitute valuable theory for coping with climate change. I also parse through several previous attempts at including Heidegger in environmental thought, with a particular focus on Deep Ecology. Although Heidegger’s work should not be considered as environmental in its own right, nor should it be used as a mere ad-on to other thought, his thought emerges as a valuable resource for developing an environmental ethics

\u3ci\u3eHe Mauka Teitei\u3c/i\u3e, \u3ci\u3eKo Aoraki\u3c/i\u3e, The Loftiest of Mountains: The Names of Aotearoa’s Highest Peak and Beyond
My thesis discusses the cultural, political, and social dynamics of mountains with separate Indigenous and Western names and identities. Centering on Aoraki/Mount Cook—the highest peak in Aotearoa New Zealand—I integrate personal experiences as ethnographic data through narratives, mainly of my time hiking while studying abroad in New Zealand and during the two recent summers I spent exploring Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. Through its name, Aoraki/Mt. Cook maintains Indigenous Māori and Western perspectives: Aoraki being a Māori atua (god) and Captain James Cook being a significant colonial figure in the Pacific. The slash upholds both identities while ensuring that they exist together. These dynamics are explored in depth and extended to mountains in places including Colorado, Alaska, and Australia. While discussing Rocky I rely heavily on Oliver Toll’s Arapaho Names & Trails (2003) which contains a substantial collection of Arapaho knowledge of the area and I give strong attention to Nesótaieux (Longs Peak and Mount Meeker). Additionally, I look at Mount Blue Sky, Denali, and Uluru/Ayers Rock to discuss mountains that have had formal name changes and how legacies are maintained through toponyms. With discussing varying identities and perceptions of each example and the knowledge held in names I encourage readers to do research into local Indigenous knowledges to further their and others’ understandings of places. I emphasize the concepts of historical silences, the revealing of knowledge, and the importance of language to articulate that Indigenous knowledge might be difficult to find but is never truly lost
