SPORT AS A MEANS OF EMANCIPATION: A GLOBAL FEMINIST PERSPECTIVE, EXPLORING THE CASE STUDY OF SAHRAWI ATHLETE INMA ZANOGUERA

    Get PDF
This thesis explores how sport can serve as an effective means of emancipation against intersecting forms of oppression, framed in the colonial context of Western Sahara. Through the case study of Sahrawi athlete and activist Inma Zanoguera, this research examines the emancipatory potential of athletics at the intersection of feminism, decolonization and the pursuit of self-determination. Chronicling the multidimensional journey of Inma Zanoguera, her narrative becomes the vehicle of a bigger message : How athletic pursuits provide a platform for subverting entrenched systems of patriarchal, racial and political oppression. As Zanoguera states, I believe in the power of sports to educate people . Amplifying her voice illuminates the intersections of gender, race, identity, human rights and the continuum of colonialism. Based on interviews, data and contextual research, this thesis aims to show how sport can catalyze collective liberation struggles, zoom in on the Sahrawi struggle for decolonization, and how non-violent resistance emerges as a catalytic model for women\u27s empowerment. This story highlights the link between sport, feminism and decolonization, which has always interested me without finding the right words to express it, nor having the chance to read or listen to it. Ultimately, this research brings questions, discussion, critique and proposals for dealing with existing sports institutions and future reforms and aims to reimagine sport as an inclusive frontier for collective struggles against intersecting oppressions

Building a Public Health Vaccine Dictionary: Recommendations for Research, Practice, and Policy

    No full text
This literature review and project proposal addresses the urgent need for standardized language in vaccine communication. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted significant disparities in understanding vaccine-related terms due to social determinants of health (SDH). Public health practitioners and the lay populations often interpret terms like herd immunity and fully vaccinated differently, leading to communication challenges and lower vaccination rates. This project proposes creating a universal vaccine lexicon to bridge these gaps, improve public health literacy, and enhance vaccine uptake. This paper outlines the methodology for developing this lexicon, emphasizing the importance of a common language to facilitate effective communication and trust in public health initiatives

    Get PDF
Abstract Background: Patient falls in healthcare settings have significant implications, contributing to extended hospital stays, increased medical costs, and adverse physical and psychological effects on patients. This study explores the impact of patient falls, the potential benefits of implementing hourly rounding, and the strategies to reduce falls and improve patient outcomes. Problem: A northern Californian hospital’s med surge/telemetry unit reported approximately 49 falls over the past two years. A quality improvement project was initiated to reduce falls and improve patient outcomes. The context section includes a microsystem assessment, purpose, and SWOT analysis, providing insights into the microsystem’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Interventions: The intervention details the proactive and structured approach of hourly rounding. The project’s success is based on reduced falls. Outcome Measures: Our outcome measure was to reduce falls by 50% by July 31, 2024. The measure would reduce falls from four to two falls per month. Our process measure counted how many authentic hourly visits were completed. The team also tracked incremental overtime and nurse job satisfaction balancing measures. Results: During the project implementation, there were seven falls, only three of which were unwitnessed. No injuries occurred during this time. Conclusion: Total falls were not reduced during the project implementation, although unwitnessed falls were reduced by 50%. More research must be done to ensure the project’s longevity. Improving Patient Care Experience by Increasing Medication Communication

    Get PDF
Background: Patient [DA1] care experiences profoundly impact a hospital\u27s competitiveness and financial viability. Effective communication about medications and their potential side effects is not just a communication strategy but a powerful tool that signifies safe patient care, leads to improved health outcomes, improves medication compliance, and reduces readmissions related to medication side effects and non-compliance. Problem: Effective communication about medications and their potential side effects is a significant indicator of safe patient care and improved health outcomes. The cardiac telemetry unit of a medical center in Northern California has not met the regional benchmark related to medication communication. Context: The Cardiac Telemetry Unit cares for patients recovering from cardiac surgeries and interventional cardiac procedures. The National benchmark for medication communication is 58.3. The current performance of the unit is at 44.2 with a performance gap of 14.3. Interventions: The proposed project utilizes the My Meds Matter (MMM) pamphlet, and RNs will highlight the medications that patients have been taught. Measures: The leading indicator of the project\u27s effectiveness is the National Research Corporation’s (NRC) real-time survey scores related to medication communication. Additionally, patient and staff engagement are assessed through Nurse Leader Rounding (NLR). Results: NRC real-time survey scores are utilized to measure the outcome on medication. The process outcome measure was audited during NLR with a target compliance rate of 90%. From April 16th to June 30th, 2024, 85% of NLR audits indicated that the patient\u27s room contained the highlighted MMM pamphlet. The NRC real-time score improved from 44.2 at the beginning of the project to 60.0 surpassing the benchmark of 58.3. Conclusions: By incorporating this educational tool, we significantly enhanced patient awareness and understanding of medication side effects, as evidenced by the notable increase in the NRC real-time score from 44.2 to 60.0, exceeding the national benchmark of 58.3, at its conclusion, surpassing the national benchmark of 58.3. The project was therefore deemed a success. The consistent presence of the pamphlet in 85% of patient rooms further demonstrated our commitment to achieving high compliance and improving patient education. This project underscores the importance of patient education in delivering quality care and sets a precedent for future initiatives aimed at enhancing the patient experience. Education and Training on Naloxone Administration for Healthcare Professionals: An Integrative Literature Review

    Get PDF
Abstract Background: Healthcare professionals’ lack of knowledge and confidence in administering naloxone affects their willingness to inform at-risk patients about its use in the event of an overdose. The lack of understanding and confidence in using naloxone delays efforts to inform at-risk patients about this life-saving treatment for opioid overdose. This integrative literature review aimed to answer the following question: Do increased education and training enhance healthcare professionals\u27 knowledge and confidence in administering naloxone and decrease the rate of opioid overdose fatalities? Methodology: A comprehensive search of the literature (2019 and 2024) was conducted to identify studies of education and training in naloxone administration to determine if they enhanced healthcare professionals’ knowledge and confidence in using the drug and their willingness to educate patients about it. Results: The literature search yielded 146 articles, of which 43 were selected for further review. Sixteen articles were ultimately selected. This study found that education and training programs in naloxone administration enhance health practitioners’ knowledge and confidence and increase their willingness to educate patients about naloxone. Such programs should be offered periodically to maintain high levels of knowledge and training. Conclusion: Education and training programs can enhance health practitioners’ knowledge and confidence in administering naloxone and their willingness to educate patients on its use. Such programs should be offered periodically to maintain healthcare professionals’ knowledge and confidence in administering naloxone. Keywords: naloxone, naloxone education, health professionals, healthcare workers, opioid users, confidence, opioid overdose, and opioid crisis

Recognizing and Engaging Mental Health Learnings towards AAPI Older Adults: An Evaluation of the City of Fremont’s Mobile Integrated Assessment Team for Seniors Program

    Get PDF
As the population of older adults ages 65 years and older continues to increase in the United States, health concerns within this population continue to grow, especially since mental health remains a concern as older adults experience feelings of emotional distress, anxiety, loneliness, and depression. Those who identify as Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPI) are severely impacted, primarily due to the COVID-19 impacts and Asian Hate Campaigns. AAPI Older Adults have endured various hardships, including assimilating into Western cultures and cultural dissonance. Unfortunately, views on seeking mental health services to overcome negative emotions are looked down upon for Asian American Pacific Islanders. As a result, the City of Fremont and the Alameda County of Behavioral Health Care Services kickstarted an AAPI Older Adult Pilot Program within the Mobile Integrated Assessment for Seniors program to incorporate mental health methods with culture. This work presents an evaluation of the program. While this program displays significant results, there is still much to improve. Since the pilot program is still very new, improvements in information communication, collaboration, and modernization will still be made. In hopes of later expanding and sustaining the program, the City of Fremont must acknowledge and address the gaps to provide accurate and equitable services for the AAPI Older Adults

Impact of Mindfulness-based Interventions on Nursing Burnout: An Integrative

    Get PDF
Burnout in the nursing profession is prevalent and can be a significant burden for not only the individual nurse but to patients and the healthcare system at large. Burnout is considered by the World Health Organization as an occupational phenomena specifically resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed, and is not related to other life events. Given the need for support among registered nurses in reducing consequences of burnout and the emerging data about mindfulness based practices as a tool to enhance resilience, this integrated review seeks to understand if education on mindfulness based interventions can improve self-reported burnout symptoms, promote well-being and therefore improve resiliency in registered nurses. A thorough integrative review of the literature was conducted to explore this question and findings were synthesized in a narrative format. Results show that mindfulness-based interventions significantly decreased perceived stress and burnout symptoms while enhancing protective factors supporting resilience. Clinical implications include a comprehensive approach incorporating mindfulness-based interventions that support intrinsic qualities of wellbeing and systemic changes that address
