Translanguaging 101 for Adult ESOL Teachers
Although translanguaging has gained recognition in K–12 education and research over the past decade, it remains largely underutilized in adult ESOL classrooms. This presentation introduces the concept of translanguaging and offers practical strategies for its implementation with adult learners, addressing a gap in both research and practice. Grounded in the theoretical framework of Community Cultural Wealth, this conference presentation challenges deficit narratives by affirming students’ linguistic and cultural knowledge as valuable classroom resources. Drawing on research that highlights the benefits of utilizing students\u27 home languages for language acquisition and identity affirmation, this presentation equips educators with tools to foster more equitable and effective learning environments
A Microsystem Fall Prevention Strategy Using the Patient-focused Fall TIPS Tool
Problem: The inconsistent use of a Fall TIPS tool in a 750-bed hospital has resulted in eight preventable patient falls in the fiscal year 2023-2024. Preventable injuries from falls increase hospital length of stay, cause patient harm, and lead to patient and staff dissatisfaction. Context: Staff engagement with the Fall TIPS tool on a cardiac unit is limited. Opportunities to incorporate the tool into standardized workflow and increase patient involvement are necessary to decrease accidental falls in this population. Intervention: An evidence-based intervention was implemented to educate staff, patients, and caregivers on the purpose, use, and responsibilities of the Fall TIPS tool to prevent unintended falls in a cardiac unit. Measures: Outcome measures include a 50% reduction in total falls by the end of fiscal year 2025. Process measures include improved utilization of the Fall TIPS tool. Balancing measures will monitor for unintended consequences, such as reduced mobility or skin breakdown, using incident reports. Results: During the four-week intervention period, Unit A showed improved compliance with Fall TIPS poster completion, averaging 83.3% across 269 audited rooms. One fall (without injury) occurred during the intervention period, which meant that the goal of a 50% reduction in falls was not met. However, there has been a meaningful decrease in falls with injury, which reflects positive progress toward improving patient safety. Conclusions: Established a foundation for sustainable fall prevention to expand hospital-wide. Empowering Medical-Surgical Nurses to Conquer Burnout: Building Resilience and Wellness
Problem: In the healthcare industry, nurse burnout is a well-documented issue that affects the well-being of both healthcare professionals and their patients. Burnout manifests as intense exhaustion, depersonalization, and diminished personal accomplishment (Okoniewski & Verni, 2024).
Context: Burnout affects patient outcomes and drives up costs (Dall’Ora et al., 2020). When nurses are overwhelmed, attendance is affected (Unpublished confidential document; 2024). Resilient nurses are essential to a healthy, reliable workforce (Unjai et al., 2024).
Interventions: From May to July 2025, a 12-week initiative was launched to reduce the effects of nurse burnout in the workplace. Evidence-based interventions were implemented, incorporating educational and behavioral strategies through the HeartMath series on Resilience Advantage, which taught nurses skills for personal and professional effectiveness.
Measures: A validated tool using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel (MBI-HSS MP) was performed pre and post to assess reported levels of burnout. This project aims to reduce self-reported burnout symptoms among nurses in a medical-surgical unit. The process measures include monitoring the participation and attendance rate of the resilience and wellness program, as well as the satisfaction survey that is administered at the end. The balancing measure is monitoring the participant’s dropout rate.
Results: The post MBI-HSS MP group results showed, on average, no improvement on the MBI scales on emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, but a slight increase in personal achievement. There was a 42% improvement on some of the MBI scales in some participants.
Conclusion: Early recognition of the chronic presence of nurse burnout requires constant attention, mitigation, and support of leadership. Prioritizing the nurse’s well-being and building resilience through the implementation of educational and behavioral strategies can be a step towards addressing nurse burnout
Effect of Seasonal Variability in Methane Emissions and Iron Redox Chemistry at Terrestrial-Aquatic Interfaces
Methane (CH₄) emissions at terrestrial–aquatic interfaces (TAIs) are significant contributors to the global carbon budget, yet the mechanisms driving methanogenesis remain poorly understood. Limited data exist on how seasonal variations and redox processes influence CH₄ fluxes in these dynamic ecosystems. This study addressed two questions: (1) How are CH₄ fluxes in riverine floodplains and adjacent hillslopes impacted by seasonal variations? (2) What roles do metal redox processes (e.g., iron (Fe)) play in regulating methanogenesis?
In-situ CH₄ flux and solid-phase Fe speciation were quantified in East River, CO, under flooded and drained conditions. Groundwater chemistry, gas flux, and soil physical properties were integrated to characterize seasonal and spatial transitions.
CH₄ fluxes were significantly higher in floodplains than in hillslopes, especially under flooded conditions with increased soil moisture and reduced environments. Mean floodplain CH₄ fluxes increased from –0.0068 ± 0.011 nmol/m²/s (drained, Sept 2024) to 0.530 ± 0.112 nmol/m²/s (flooded, June 2024). Hillslope fluxes remained low, from –0.352 ± 0.018 nmol/m²/s (drained) to –0.173 ± 0.011 nmol/m²/s (flooded).
Fe(II) concentrations were substantially higher under flooded conditions in floodplains (53.31 ± 5.28 mg Fe/kg) than in hillslopes (34.84 ± 3.10 mg Fe/kg), indicating strong anoxia correlating with elevated CH₄ flux. However, Fe(II)–CH₄ correlations were inconsistent, suggesting interacting controls. Soil texture likely modulates water retention and anoxia, influencing methanogenesis.
Seasonal hydrologic changes exert dominant control over CH₄ flux dynamics. These findings improve understanding of how spatial and temporal gradients, particularly hydrology and redox dynamics, shape greenhouse gas emissions from TAIs
Kid Power: Mastering Asthma Management to Keep Hospitals Away!
Problem: Pediatric asthma remains a leading cause of preventable hospitalizations, particularly in California’s Central Valley, where environmental and health disparities worsen symptoms. Many children are discharged without understanding their Asthma Action Plan (AAP) or feeling confident in symptom management.
Context: On a unit in a community hospital in this high-risk region, asthma-related admissions persisted. Gaps in discharge education highlighted the need for a structured intervention. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Model for Improvement (MFI) guided this effort.
Intervention: A nurse-led, developmentally appropriate asthma education bundle was implemented. Teaching began on admission and was reinforced using teach-back, color-coded AAPs, culturally responsive materials, and coordinated discharge planning.
Measures: Pre/post assessments evaluated knowledge of triggers, medication use, AAP familiarity, and confidence. Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles supported continuous improvement.
Results: Among six patients, AAP comprehension and confidence doubled. Daily controller use increased from 17% to 67%, with all post-assessed participants demonstrating appropriate response actions.
Conclusions: Nurse-led asthma education improved pediatric self-management and caregiver involvement. Visual tools and early, repeated teaching drove success.
Implications for Practice: This scalable, low-cost model may reduce pediatric asthma readmissions
Evolving Discipline Strategies: The Effects of Police Removal on School Discipline in San Francisco
As conversations about equity and student well-being continue to shape public education, longstanding approaches to discipline in schools are being reevaluated. One major area of focus has been the presence of police on school campuses, especially when punitive systems have disproportionately harmed marginalized students. In San Francisco, this shift culminated in the 2020 passage of Resolution 206, which formally ended the school district’s partnership with the San Francisco Police Department and removed armed officers from campuses. This capstone examines the impact of that decision by exploring how school discipline practices have changed in the years since. Through interviews with members of the San Francisco school community, alongside analysis of district policies, this research finds that while the removal of police has reduced direct student criminalization, it has also emphasized gaps in discipline infrastructure, educator support, and implementation consistency. Respondents described uncertainty around new expectations and a lack of clear alternatives for handling student behavior. This study argues that police removal is a necessary first step toward more equitable school environments, but its success depends on sustained investment in non-punitive practices, stronger communication with educators, and a deeper cultural shift within schools
Enhancing Adherence to Oxytocin Administration Guidelines to Reduce Postpartum Hemorrhage Rates in a Labor and Delivery Unit
Abstract
Background: Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) remains a critical challenge in maternal care. It shows a 13% PPH incidence rate in a high-risk labor and delivery unit in a northern California medical center, exceeding the national benchmark of 5%–10% based on 2021 ACOG data from 150 patient records.
Problem: There is inconsistent adherence to oxytocin administration guidelines, with only 60% of 100 audited charts documenting fetal and uterine activity, contributing to the elevated rate. The team is looking for a target rate of 90%.
Intervention: This involves implementing a checklist, providing training for 25 clinicians, and conducting two 30-minute simulation scenarios over 3 months.
Outcome measures: This included PPH rates, documentation completeness (target 90%), labor duration, and cesarean rates, assessed via electronic health record (EHR) audits and surveys. The PPH rate was targeted to decrease from 13% to 10%, measured weekly via EHR audits.
Results: This project saw a PPH rate decrease to 10% and documentation adherence reaching 90% post-intervention, reducing costs by an estimated 7,500 each.
Conclusion: This project supports sustained training and protocol integration to maintain these outcomes, validated by 85% of staff confidence in post-intervention surveys.

Best Practices to Prevent Nurse Burnout and Reduce Turnover in the Hospital
Abstract
Problem Nursing is facing a crisis in workforce well-being, and trends indicate signs and symptoms of burnout. Increasing turnover rates, emotional exhaustion, staff depersonalization, and team disengagement have resulted in a perceived toxic environment in a hospital-based microsystem.
Context A 4-month project was initiated to improve morale and communication. Several assessment tools were utilized to foster a high-performing team and reinforce principles of Watson’s theory of caring.
Interventions Optimization of required daily leader rounds to encourage patient participation, and monthly 1:1 “direct report” rounds (n=65) were conducted to assess well-being, workplace stressors, and promote job satisfaction.
Measures To improve quarterly turnover rates from 10 percent in 2021 to 8 percent through May 2025. Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) logs documented qualitative assessment of nurse leader and direct report rounds. A burnout survey (n=62) was conducted and 14 questions were evaluated from the biannual workforce satisfaction survey.
Results A 94 percent response rate to the burnout survey was achieved. Qualitative data from daily and monthly rounds reinforced the importance of authentic listening, and compassionate care resulting in a positive culture change. Quarterly turnover rates improved from 8.3 percent in February 2025 to 7.1 percent in May 2025.
Conclusions Optimizing leadership rounds, monitoring and responding to signs and symptoms of burnout led to decreased turnover and a healthy work environment. This project necessitates a shift from directive management to inclusive leadership styles, which foster staff empowerment. A systems approach is required to address turnover rates at the organizational and unit levels
Pathways to Possibility: A Multilingual Perspective in Community Colleges
Community Colleges (CCs) play a vital role within both their local communities and the broader American educational system. This study examines the role of the community college, with particular attention to its English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programs, and the structural dynamics of public funding. Despite the recognized significance of community colleges, the allocation of public funding, distinctly for ESOL programs, continues to reflect structural imbalances. Although research demonstrates the significance of community colleges in widening learning opportunities for marginalized students, critical pedagogy reminds us that educational access remains structurally unequal.
Emerging research indicates that the transformation of placement processes under Assembly Bills 705 and 1705 has yielded favorable educational outcomes for multilingual students. Research increasingly emphasizes pedagogical benefits of non-traditional approaches such as multilingual classrooms. Aligned with the Cognitive Academic Language Learning Approach (CALLA), practices that value multilingual students’ linguistic and cultural knowledge while fostering collaborative thinking between teachers and learners contribute significantly to academic achievement and equity.
Future research framed through a collaborative lens, engaging multilingual students, community colleges, and government stakeholders can help reimagine pathways toward a multilingual educational model. Such vision serves to promote inclusive education and hold community colleges as equitable spaces that empower students to participate meaningfully in a diverse society
