2020 AWARD FOR EXCELLENT TEACHING 
BY AN EARLY CAREER FACULTY MEMBER 
Brigid Vance 
In the five years since you joined the History department, you 
have established a reputation as one of our most consistently 
creative and dynamic professors. And you hit the ground 
running, if end-of-term course evaluations can be taken as 
a guide: "I LOVE this class," wrote a student in your Fall 
2015 edition of Western Encounters with China, one of the first 
courses you taught at Lawrence. "I have learned so much, 
and I have seen myself growing and improving by doing all 
these readings and writing all these papers ... the professor is 
someone I would love to take more classes with." 
From that auspicious start we have seen a steady increase in 
the number of students who have discovered your courses 
and concluded that you are, indeed, exactly the kind of 
professor they would love to take more classes with. Impartial 
faculty observers describe your almost magical effect on 
History 105, the department's entry-level course. "Since 
Professor Vance began to teach that course," one colleague 
observed, "department enrollments and majors have climbed 
noticeably." Students describe your Comparative History of 
Dreams class as proceeding like, well, something out of a 
dream: "This is one of the best classes I've taken, from 
one of my favorite teachers!" 
A specialist in late imperial China, your courses on Western 
Encounters with China, Sustainable China, Interactions Along the 
Silk Road, and Traditional East Asian Civilizations are regularly 
described by students as "inspiring," "purposeful," and-
most frequently-"fun." Students appreciate your ability 
to balance rigor with flexibility, your skill in cultivating 
energetic classroom discussion, your detailed attention 
to their writing, and-above all-the warmth and respect 
with which you approach each and every one of them. 
In the words of one of those students, "she has all the 
moral faculties of an ideal liberal arts college professor." 
l am delighted to acknowledge and affirm the esteem of 
your students and colleagues by presenting you with the 
2020 Award for Excellent Teaching by an Early Career 
Faculty Member.

Thomas Ryckman 
THOMAS RYCKMAN, since coming to Lawrence 
University in 1984, you have served as a linchpin in the 
Philosophy departm.ent, offering courses in symbolic 
logic, epistemology, metaphysics, the philosophy of art, 
and the philosophy of language. For many years you 
offered the Freshman Studies lecture on Plato's theory 
of forms, introducing hundreds of students through one 
of the university's quintessentially Lawrentian experiences. 
After receiving a B.A. with distinction at the U niversity 
of Michigan-Flint, you went on to graduate studies 
in Philosophy at the University of Massachusetts at 
Amherst, completing the Ph.D. in 1984 while also 
concluding two years' service as visiting instru ctor of 
Philosophy ar Iowa Stare U niversity. That same year you 
accepted the position at Lawrence. 
In 1986, you were awarded both the University's 
O mstanding Young Teacher Award and the Mortar 
Board Award for Teach ing Excellence. Three years later 
you were tenured and promoted to Associate Professor 
and assumed responsibilities as Director of Freshman 
Studies. You wound up serving two tours of duty as 
Freshman S tudies Director, returning to that position 
in 199 5. From 2008 to 20 10 you served as director of 
the Senior Experience Program. Over the course of your 
career, you have served on all of the major committees of 
the facu lty, including Tenure, Enrollment, C urriculum, 
and you have stepped in more than once to chair the 
Philosophy department. In 2012 you were awarded 
the Excellence in Teaching Award, making you o ne of 
the few faculty at Lawrence to have received all of the 
University's awards for excellence in the classroom. 
Yo ur scholarly work o n epistemology, philosophy 
of language, and metaphysics has been presented at 
multiple meetings of the American Philosoph ical 
Association and led to publications in several 
journals, including Th e Monist, Philosophy and 
Phenomenological Research, and The Encyclopedia 
of British Philosophy. ln addition, you have served 
as a reviewer for the Austrian Science Fund, Oxford 
University Press, and the Journal of the History o f 
Analytic Philosophy. 
In recogn ition of your many contributio ns to Lawrence 
and its students, I am pleased to award you the degree 
of Master of Arts, ad eundem, on the occasion of your 
retirement from the faculty.

2020 AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN SCHOLARSHIP OR CREATIVE ACTIVITY 
Rob Neilson 
You came to Lawrence in 2003 having already completed 
public art commissions in New Mexico and North Carolina. 
In retrospect, these two projects can be seen as a bit of a 
warm-up and a portent of things to come. Since then, you 
have completed 14 public art commissions, placing 
thoughtful, engaging sculptural work in communities from 
California to Washington and Nebraska, in addition to 
Appleton, which you have blessed with five works since 
making the town your home. 
Most recently, you have contributed two elegant pieces 
to the new Fox C ities Exhibition Center. "You Are Here" 
evokes a large map of Wisconsin with a red push-pin 
denoting Appleton. The 10 dramatic, outsized images of 
"We Are Here" are comprised of some 10,000 photographs 
of Appleton community members, combined in mosaic 
fashion to represent a moving, composite portrait of human 
togetherness and community. 
By your own admission, you did not set out to be an artist 
known for creating public work. But you have clearly been 
called to make your aesthetic contributions to the world 
in ways that heighten our sense of the beauty of shared 
experience, to the benefit of us all. As you have written, "art 
in the public realm recalls to us what we value and reiterates 
back to us our view of ourselves and what we aspire to be. 
It encourages us to remember our history and demands 
we recall our humanity. It shows us not only how we have 
constructed/ created our civilization but why we have done 
so. In a society dominated by screens, virtual realities, and 
cyber worlds, art in the public realm provides an increasingly 
rare opportunity for sincere and sustained contemplation of 
our physical world. It stimulates consideration of the culture 
we collaboratively h ave built, as well as our individual and 
collective role therein. Art in the public realm matters because 
it illuminates why we matter." It gives me great pleasure to 
present you with the 2020 faculty award for Excellence in 
Creative Activity.
