PETER J. GILBERT, it is often said that the library is the 
heart of a campus. From your arrival at Lawrence 32 years 
ago to now, you have made that truism a reality for thousands 
of Lawrentians, providing mission-critical research support 
and educational services with thoughtful care, warmth, and 
engaging good humor.
A graduate of Carleton College who majored in English, you 
came to Lawrence as a reference librarian in the summer of 
1990, six months after receiving your M.A. degree in Library 
and Information Studies at the University of Wisconsin-
Madison. Nine years later you were named Director of 
Instructional Technology, which allowed you to play an 
important early role in the University’s engagement with 
emerging digital technologies in research and pedagogy. 
You became the campus webmaster in 2002, building the 
University’s website and establishing access to Gopher, 
the internet application that first introduced the college 
to networked library services. Three years later you were 
promoted to University Librarian; in 2005 you were named 
the Alice G. Chapman Director of the Library.
Honors and recognition you have received over the years 
include the 2009 First-Year Studies teaching award and 
the 1996 LUCC Campus Achievement award. In addition, 
you have provided steadfast service to the broader campus 
community, serving on the Curriculum Committee; 
the Faculty Committee on University Governance; the 
Committee on Teaching Development; the Technology 
Advisory Committee; the 2010 Strategic Planning task force; 
and the Academic Advising Committee, which you chaired 
during the 2020–21 academic year, providing calm, steady 
guidance in the midst of a pandemic. In addition, you 
have ably represented Lawrence in the Wisconsin Library 
Association, serving as that organization’s chair in 2016.
 
Pete, in recognition of your many contributions to Lawrence 
and its students, faculty, and staff, I am pleased to award you 
the degree of Master of Arts, ad eundem, on the occasion of 
your retirement.

Honorary Degree Award Citation for Peter Gilbert

Several renowned scholars of sonata form have assumed a dialectical framework for analysis, manifested primarily in analytical narratives driven by hierarchy and thematic conflict. While both theoretical and narratological methodologies have yielded much insightful analysis, working within just those fields can only push analyses so far. I propose that opening analytical approaches to the field of queer musicology would further our narratological insight of sonata form, demonstrating that many other stories can be told that do not hinge on conflict or hierarchy. I will show how this works in Nikolai Medtner’s Sonata-Skazka, op. 25 no.1 (1910-1911) for solo piano
