    Transformation characteristics of supersaturated aluminium-chromium solid-solution.

    A supersaturated solid solution containing 1.6 W/o chromium was formed by cooling AI-2W/o Cr alloy at rates greater than 1250°C/s from the liquid state. On annealing, the alloy preferred to transform to the stable CrAI7 phase without revealing the predominance of vacancy solute clusters as evidenced in Al-Mn system. The activation energy for the growth of CrAl7 was found to be between 0.40 to 0.50 ev and the degree of supersaturation was found to vary exponentially with the, cooling rate

    Thermomechanical processing of Al based particulate composites.

    Thermomechanical processing of aluminium-based particulate composites containing dispersions of various soft and hard particles such as graphite, zircon, glass, alumina and mica in aluminium alloy matrices, with a view to improving strength and ductility for structural applications, has been discussed. The existing literature on the subject has been critically reviewed and analysed, and broad guidelines for optimum thermomechanical processing have been presented. Considerable improvements in strength and ductility of these composite materials have been reported after rolling, forging and extrusion due to fragmentation/fibrization of particles together with the refinement of matrix microstructure, annihilation of defects such as porosity, and texture hardening, etc. The influence of process variables, and of volume fraction, size and morphology of the particles on the strengthening mechanisms, fracture toughness and work-hardening behaviour of worked composites has been discussed

    Tensile and impact behaviour of chopped sunhemp-polyester composites

    Composites of chopped sunhemp fibres with polyester resin have been examined; ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and impact strength have been determined. UTS of sunhemp-polyester composites increases with increase in volume fraction of sunhemp fibre. This increase in UTS has been explained on the basis of adhesion between fibre and matrix. Impact strength of the composites increases with increase in volume fraction of fibre because the fibres help in arresting and diverting cracks.\u

    An improved method for separation and quantitative analysis of ceramic particles in aluminiumceramic mixture and cast materials is given. The mixture containing H2SO4, HNO3 and HCI has been found to be most efficient in the separation process. Mixtures containing other acids have been shown to be unsuitable.
