Description of four new filamentous cyanobacterial taxa from freshwater habitats in the Azores Archipelago.
Simple filamentous cyanobacteria comprise a diverse and polyphyletic group of species, primarily in the orders Leptolyngbyales and Oscillatoriales, that need more sampling to improve their taxonomy. Oceanic islands, such as the Azores archipelago, present unique habitats and biogeographic conditions that harbor an unknown range of diversity of microorganisms. Filamentous cyanobacteria isolated from aquatic habitats in the Azores and maintained in the BACA culture collection were described using morphology, both light and transmission electron microscopy, ecology, and genetic data of the 16S rRNA gene sequences and 16S–23S Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) rRNA region secondary structure. Our analyses revealed two new monophyletic genera: Tumidithrix elongata gen. sp. nov. (Pseudanabaenaceae) and Radiculonema aquaticum gen. sp. nov. (Leptolyngbyaceae). In addition, two new species Leptodesmis lacustris sp. nov. (Leptolyngbyaceae) and Pycnacronema la-custrum sp. nov. (Wilmottiaceae) are reported as the first aquatic species for these genera. The description of these new taxa and the genetic study of an isolate of Leptodesmis alaskaensis from the Azores followed the polyphasic approach, identifying diacritical features. Our results reinforce the need for taxonomic studies on cyanobacteria from less-studied habits and geographic regions, which have a potential for new taxa description
Online Streaming Services: A Study on Consumers’ Attitudes toward Advertising
Throughout the past decade, there has been a slow and steady rise in the number of online streaming platforms. Websites such as YouTube, Twitch, and Netflix have all taken the globe by storm with their compelling stories and interconnected communities. The numbers alone for each of these platforms speaks volumes to their prevalence in society; YouTube has over 2 billion monthly users, Netflix has well over 167 million consumers, and Twitch currently has 15 million daily active users (Frade, 2021). From this, of course, arises companies’ desire to broadcast their products and services to the vast number of people who are using these services in hopes of gaining their attention and eventually brand loyalty. However, viewers on these platforms are well aware of advertising tactics of older mediums, meaning that these companies must find modern methods to meet the desires of their consumers. This research, through two online experimental studies explores the advertisement format-choice and their attitudes and preferences on different types of streaming platforms. Implications for marketing practitioners and consumers are also discussed
Determination of taxonomic placement of falsely-branched taxa in soils of San Nicolas Island and reassessment of the Tolypothrichaceae.
This study was conducted to determine the taxonomic placement of falsely-branched taxa in the soil crusts of San Nicolas Island, which is the largest of the Channel Islands lying off the coast of California. After microscopic analysis of the strains collected from the island, a phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA genes, and an analysis of the 16S-23S ITS region, we have identified that these strains belong to the soil genus Spirirestis, which is in the Tolypothrichaceae family. The Tolypothrichaceae is a wellcharacterized monophyletic lineage of non-attenuated, false-branching heteropolar types containing the genera Spirirestis, Hassallia, Tolypothrix, Coleodesmium, and Rexia. The strains analyzed specifically belonged to the genus Spirirestis, which is characterized by having heterocyte formation, false branching, presence of sheath, and tightly spiraled trichomes. In addition to determining the taxonomic placement of the falsely- branched taxa in the soils of San Nicolas Island, we reassessed the Tolypothichaceae family. Based on our results, there was a clear distinction between the soil and the aquatic clades in the family. However, the family should not be split into two families due to high similarity of the 16S rRNA genes. The Tolypothrichaceae needs revision based on the presence of many polyphyletic genera

Disillusioned with college, Everett takes a position teaching philosophy to kids at a summer enrichment academy. He uses as his curriculum an exploration of the concept of happiness as described by ten eminent philosophers, an idea sparked by a collection of readings saved by the original owner of the mansion in which the academy is housed.
