Bike 
Nikola Skorin  
 
The feeling of freedom 
is overpowering, 
it runs through your body 
like a drug. 
Nobody remembers 
the first time they walked, 
but everybody remembers 
their first bike ride. 
Since I can remember, there 
was always a hand present 
in case of any emergency. 
The moment, the hand disappears 
from the back of the bike, is the moment 
I think I am fully grown, ready for the world. 
The hand lets go of the string and there I go 
flying into the unknown, thinking that 
I am capable of doing anything I want. 
The letting go, must have been the most 
difficult thing a parent must do. 
Losing a grip on somebody that you had 
been molding for years, makes you feel 
like an artist that painted a masterpiece 
but must wait and see, if it materializes

Achilles of the Asphodel Fields

Regret—Goddess, sing the regret of long-dead Achilles, 
slain, condemned to a fate decided by gods, 
damned to Persephone’s asphodel fields 
to drift for eternity, mingling with a host 
of faceless shades. For now that his rage 
has cooled in these pallor fields, he lifts his eyes 
to the firmament of Hades and, in sound mind, 
discovers too late the death of a forgotten old man 
is a far, far better end than the death 
of a bloodied and murd’rous youth 
doomed to eternal heroism in the annals of history. 
Asphodel means my regrets follow you to the grave.

My bat clinks at my heels as I walk, 
freeing the mud held captive in my cleats, 
leaving a trail of misplaced turg 
in my wake like the ripples of foam 
that chase ferries out to Kelleys. 
I turn around to ensure my Grandma 
can glide her walker around my debris, 
careful not to leave her in the dust. 
After all, no money finds it home 
in the pockets of baseball pants. 
That honor goes to half-emptied 
Big League Chew (and that clover 
from the outfield that I swear 
had four leaves when I picked it.) 
We trot, more or less, to concessions, 
where I know I will shout, 
One Rainbow Slushie please! 
and my Grandma will laugh and produce 
a five-dollar bill, kindly asking  
for a Pepsi of her own to sip, 
before we sit at our picnic table. 
She will park her walker next to me, 
and I will slurp my concoction happily, 
spilling some between the cracks 
in the concrete, nourishing the weeds 
that would grow in ten years’ time, 
when there would be no more ball to play 
and no one to sit at our table.

Bathtub Fishbowl

Waking up begrudgingly 
In a cold clammy sweat 
But I’ll start the day strong 
Carpet Diadem, as they say…right? 
I pull on my galoshes and wade through my home 
I feed the fish and flora, as I make my coffee 
Scattering pellets and handfuls of snails 
I’ll have something to eat as well, I suppose 
Perhaps a banana? With a side of Grape Nuts? 
Sounds sufficient for my big day 
Pouring up a bowl and peeling its fruity companion 
I top it off with some sauce, not sure what kind 
It’s been in my fridge unlabeled for years 
It’s getting awfully green in here, I’ll need to de-algae soon 
Especially the carpet, I can feel the seaweed underfoot 
As I trudge to the dining room table 
The day will soon begin 
I grab my salt-encrusted respirator and tanks 
And my barnacle-covered briefcase 
As I open the door and swim out

Once the snow fell to a degree  
Too extreme to stay still,  
Silas moved East and up. 
He got stuck in driveways, 
And streets the plow never saw 
And his friend had died a few 
months past 
From a cancer that spread like 
peanut butter 
On a waffle.  
Yet he drove up to unchartered 
territory  
and moved into that cave  
that Plato talked about.  
He brought me there too  
and we unhooked the chains  
of those unenlightened before us  
and Silas set up his tv while I 
watched  
on the couch. And a few months 
before that  
His cousin had passed too. 
Addiction 
Ran through his blood, leaving 
Silas. With 
The shower that had some 
caulking issues 
and the basement that felt damp,  
he hung up my picture  
on the fridge and made this place  
feel like his home. He has to call 
the gas guy  
And shovel my grandma’s 
sidewalk  
And walk past the skeletons  
of the lives that lived there before 
him 
But he falls asleep on the couch  
every night the way I would when 
I was little  
yet there’s no one to carry him to 
bed. 
So he wakes up and does it once 
again 
Removing the last boxes from his 
car  
and resetting the Wi-Fi until he 
remembers  
the password. He changes the 
sheets  
on the bed he won’t use 
While he creates a home  
Out of a rock  
And brings me with him to the
