    Slopes of modular forms and the ghost conjecture, II

    In a previous article we constructed an entire power series over -adic weight space (the ghost series) and conjectured, in the -regular case, that this series encodes the slopes of overconvergent modular forms of any -adic weight. In this paper, we construct abstract ghost series which can be associated to various natural subspaces of overconvergent modular forms. This abstraction allows us to generalize our conjecture to, for example, the case of slopes of overconvergent modular forms with a fixed residual representation that is locally reducible at . Ample numerical evidence is given for this new conjecture. Further, we prove that the slopes computed by any abstract ghost series satisfy a distributional result at classical weights (consistent with conjectures of Gouvêa) while the slopes form unions of arithmetic progressions at all weights not in

    The Thoralf Plugin: For Your Fancy Type Needs

    Many fancy types (e.g., generalized algebraic data types, type families) require a type checker plugin. These fancy types have a type index (e.g., type level natural numbers) with an equality relation that is difficult or impossible to represent using GHC’s built-in type equality. The most practical way to represent these equality relations is through a plugin that asserts equality constraints. However, such plugins are difficult to write and reason about. In this paper, we (1) present a formal theory of reasoning about the correctness of type checker plugins for type indices, and, (2) apply this theory in creating Thoralf, a generic and extensible plugin for type indices that translates GHC constraint problems to queries to an external SMT solver. By “generic and extensible”, we mean the restrictions on extending Thoralf are slight, and, if some type index could be encoded as an SMT sort, then a programmer could extend Thoralf by providing this encoding function

    This semester, Educational Technology Services staff offered a Praxis Fieldwork Seminar on Exploring Museum Applications of Augmented and Virtual Reality. The classroom component of the course focused on how digital technologies are shaping the work of museums and other cultural institutions and the scholarship of museum studies. This was complemented by a hands-on fieldwork component in which students worked with AR/VR tools to design their own exhibit, installation or app. Jenny Spohrer (Director of Educational Technology Services), Kelly Strunk and Palak Bhandari (Educational Technologist) will discuss why they wanted to build a project-based course around such new, emerging technologies and their process for and the challenges of conceptualizing, designing, and facilitating it

    Blended Learning in the Introductory Physics Lab

    Learning goals in the introductory physics lab can be summarized as: 1) reinforcing concepts and 2) developing laboratory skills. In 2017, blended learning components were added to Principles of Physics III at Denison. Short pre-lab videos gave students conceptual background and an overview of each week’s lab. Students engaged with material in online pre-lab quizzes, receiving automatic feedback. The instructor used pre-lab quiz responses to gauge students’ conceptual understanding, leading to more time for lab skills development in lab. Strategies for creating the videos and quizzes, how they led to modifications to lab, and assessment results will be discussed

    Constraints on radial migration in spiral galaxies – II. Angular momentum distribution and preferential migration

    The orbital angular momentum of individual stars in galactic discs can be permanently changed through torques from transient spiral patterns. Interactions at the corotation resonance dominate these changes and have the further property of conserving orbital circularity. We derived in an earlier paper an analytic criterion that an unperturbed stellar orbit must satisfy in order for such an interaction to occur, i.e. for it to be in a trapped orbit around corotation. We here use this criterion in an investigation of how the efficiency of induced radial migration for a population of disc stars varies with the angular momentum distribution of that population. We frame our results in terms of the velocity dispersion of the population, this being an easier observable than is the angular momentum distribution. Specifically, we investigate how the fraction of stars in trapped orbits at corotation varies with the velocity dispersion of the population, for a system with an assumed flat rotation curve. Our analytic results agree with the finding from simulations that radial migration is less effective in populations with ‘hotter’ kinematics. We further quantify the dependence of this trapped fraction on the strength of the spiral pattern, finding a higher trapped fraction for higher amplitude perturbations

    The Blind Psychological Scientists and the Elephant: Reply to Sherlock and Zietsch

    The Commentary by Sherlock and Zietsch (2018) raises important questions about how the science of human psychological development moves forward as researchers make dramatic strides in understanding the role of genetics. In this response, we return to these larger questions, but we begin by addressing Sherlock and Zietsch’s specific argument that “genetic contributions should almost always be considered when dealing with associations between parents’ behavior and their children’s behavior” (p. 156). In our 60-year study of the association between warmth of the childhood family environment and late-life security of attachment (Waldinger & Schulz, 2016), we did not mention the potential influence of genetic factors, and we regret this omission. Moreover, we acknowledge that in some places in the article, we used causal language that was not justified by the design of the study. Although we explicitly stated that the association between warmth of the childhood family environment and late-life security of attachment is correlational and not causal, we went on to interpret these findings as indications of support for the influence of childhood environment on well-being in adulthood. Although this is a plausible interpretation, Sherlock and Zietsch are justified in arguing that genetic influences could contribute to this link and that our article should have noted this. The editorial review process encourages investigators to highlight the implications of their work, and in our enthusiasm to convey the importance of an association that spans six decades, we did not adequately address possible alternative explanations for this association.
