Guided Writing in Content-Rich Disciplinary Electives
This session promotes an approach to student writing that directs attention to those points in the writing process that can most benefit the student writer. It relies on the principle that it is far less time consuming to grade a well written essay than one poorly conceived and executed. The session will guide participants through each step in the process and make clear how we use rubrics, peer reviews, and the campus LMS to limit the amount of time the instructor needs to spend with each student’s work product and the amount of disciplinary “content” sacrificed to the writing process
Blended Learning Certification: An Institutional Approach
This 20-minute presentation will describe the process by which Lenoir-Rhyne University developed a blended learning certification program in response to a need for focused time for faculty transitioning from teaching in face-to-face format to a blended learning environment. The certification was designed and delivered by two faculty in the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Office of Instructional Technology. This presentation will describe the process of the certification’s initial design, explore ways of helping faculty experience blended learning, and consider ways in which the program uses blended learning pedagogies to help faculty be successful in the blended learning environment
Teaching upper level statistics courses through a shared/hybrid model
Under the Liberal Arts Consortium for Online Learning (LACOL) Upper Level Math/Stats Project, I taught an elective course (Bayesian Statistics) through a shared/hybrid model in Fall 2017. I would love to share my experience on designing such a course, and my thoughts on how to build up a cross-campus learning community
Didier William, Nestor Armando Gil/Taller Workshop: Swarm

The work of artists Didier William (b. 1983) and Nestor Armando Gil (b. 1971) beckons viewers, as an imperative, to physically and intellectually “swarm” conceptions of colonialism in order to disarm such narratives of power. The artists’ mixed media practices in printmaking, painting, collage, sculpture, installation, and performance are inflected by their Haitian and Cuban heritages as well as the diasporic communities they call home in the United States.
Didier William, born in Haiti and active in the United States, is a painter and printmaker, whose work critiques the historical narratives of colonialism through strategies of mythmaking. Nestor Armando Gil was born to Cuban immigrants in Florida and currently resides in the United States. His work examines movement, memory, and loss within diasporic communities in sculpture and performance.
Their experiential works provide encounters with constructed and imaginary histories of immigration. Together, their work allows for an inclusive viewing experience that disables the divisive logic of “we” versus “them” embedded within past and current discussions of immigration. Rather than adhering to previous historical outcomes, William and Gil investigate the processes of building community across diaspora, dislocation, and relocation.

Catalytic Enantioselective Birch–Heck Sequence for the Synthesis of Tricyclic Structures with All-Carbon Quaternary Stereocenters
A new enantioselective desymmetrizing Mizoroki–Heck reaction is reported. The process affords high yields and enantioselectivities of tricyclic structures containing all-carbon quaternary stereocenters. The substrates for the reaction are efficiently synthesized from Birch reduction–alkylation of benzoic acid and benzoate esters
Attachment and adaptation to breast cancer: The mediating role of avoidant emotion processes
Attachment insecurity is associated with difficulties in adapting to cancer. Accumulating evidence points to the influence of avoidant emotion processes in this association. This study explored this pathway by examining the association between attachment insecurity and quality of life in women with breast cancer, and by exploring the mediating role of two avoidant emotion processes in this association. Women with breast cancer (N = 155) completed measures of attachment, emotional suppression, emotional awareness and quality of life. Avoidance of attachment was positively associated with emotional suppression (β = .29, p \u3c .01) and lack of emotional awareness (β = .27, p \u3c .01), and negatively associated with quality of life (β = −.22, p \u3c .05). Lack of emotional awareness partially mediated the relationship between attachment avoidance and quality of life (indirect effect β = −.12, p = .008). Attachment anxiety was not associated with any variable. Attachment avoidance may hinder the process of adaptation to breast cancer and difficulties in identifying and describing emotions may be partly responsible for this influence. Access to and ability to benefit from social and medical supports is likely to depend on being able to engage with others and recognise and process emotions effectively. Structural features and domain movements controlling substrate binding and cofactor specificity in class II HMG-CoA reductase
The key mevalonate pathway enzyme 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase (HMGR) uses the cofactor NAD(P)H to reduce HMG-CoA to mevalonate in the production of countless metabolites and natural products. Although inhibition of HMGR by statin drugs is well-understood, several mechanistic details of HMGR catalysis remain unresolved, and the structural basis for the wide range of cofactor specificity for either NADH or NADPH among HMGRs from different organisms is also unknown. Here, we present crystal structures of HMGR from Streptococcus pneumoniae (SpHMGR) alongside kinetic data of the enzyme’s cofactor preferences. Our structure of SpHMGR bound with its kinetically preferred NADPH cofactor suggests how NADPH-specific binding and recognition are achieved. In addition, our structure of HMG-CoA-bound SpHMGR reveals large, previously unknown conformational domain movements that may control HMGR substrate binding and enable cofactor exchange without intermediate release during the catalytic cycle. Taken together, this work provides critical new insights into both the HMGR reaction mechanism and the structural basis of cofactor specificity
Orexins and stress
The neuropeptides orexins are important in regulating the neurobiological systems that respond to stressful stimuli. Furthermore, orexins are known to play a role many of the phenotypes associated with stress-related mental illness such as changes in cognition, sleep-wake states, and appetite. Interestingly, orexins are altered in stress-related psychiatric disorders such as Major Depressive Disorder and Anxiety Disorders. Thus, orexins may be a potential target for treatment of these disorders. In this review, we will focus on what is known about the role of orexins in acute and repeated stress, in stress-induced phenotypes relevant to psychiatric illness in preclinical models, and in stress-related psychiatric illness in humans. We will also briefly discuss how orexins may contribute to sex differences in the stress response and subsequent phenotypes relevant to mental health, as many stress-related psychiatric disorders are twice as prevalent in women
