Death in Berlin: Hegel on mortality and the social order

    Get PDF
It is widely acknowledged that Hegel holds the view that a rational social order needs to reconcile us to our status as natural beings, with bodily needs and desires. But while this general view is well-known, one of its most surprising implications is rarely explored: namely the implication that, for Hegel, a rational social order also has to reconcile us to the inevitable fate of everything natural and organic – it needs to reconcile ourselves to our own mortality. This paper explains this largely unknown dimension of Hegel’s view, as well as its implications for contemporary social philosophy. The main contemporary upshot is going to be that Hegel’s argument can be read as presenting the case for a ‘politics of mortality’: for a type of social critique that holds society to the standard of how easy it makes it for social members to face death with a reconciled attitude

How does the act of making support higher education? At the Makerspace at Swarthmore College, we believe that providing resources and encouragement to students, staff, and faculty, to pursue learning through the making of physical objects helps translate abstract concepts into reality. See examples of how professors have used our wood shop and digital fabrications lab to support their classrooms, and how members of our campus have learned new skills through projects that awaken their curiosities

Chernobyl as Total Installation: Planning and Implementation

    No full text
The final course project in RUSS043 Chernobyl: Nuclear Narratives & the Environment (Swarthmore College, Spring 2020) merges digital and public humanities tools to spread greater understanding of the Chernobyl disaster. Using an analog space (a mock control room modeled on the Chernobyl plant), students explore various facets of the disaster through digital media to craft an interactive “total installation” that invites audience members to experience and learn about Chernobyl in novel ways. This presentation seeks to share some potential benefits and strategies learned from designing such an expansive project

Lesson learned over a decade (almost) with Panopto lecture capture

    No full text
In Fall 2011, Haverford College conducted a pilot of the Panopto lecture capture platform. At that time, Panopto was just a couple of years old and a relatively small player in the lecture capture world. We adopted the platform after the pilot and have been using it since—watching and learning as more and more colleges adopted this tool. Haverford has adopted the tool for many uses: recording course lectures, guest lectures, and search talks creating flipped content helping student practice presentations and performances Session participants will learn some of the tricks that Haverford developed over the years to address these details—as well as other implementation tips, troubleshooting tools, and user support methods. Participants will also share their own experiences with lecture capture. We will all learn from each other about Panopto and other lecture capture options
