    Get PDF
The number of Chinese tourists who travel to New Zealand are increasing and maintain high numbers. However, the number of Chinese tourists who stay in A City Motel is minimal, and only stand for 1/15 of the total customers. This survey aims to understand the factors affecting Chinese tourists’ choice of motel in New Zealand as well as identify their expectations, in order to improve motel popularity and sales. This survey adopted a paper questionnaire with 19 closed questions. These questions focused on eight aspects of the motel: price, facilities, service, location, decoration, cleaning, security, and booking. The sample size was 60 Chinese tourists who stayed in the motel, and they were selected by convenience sampling. The data analysis method used here was manual calculation. The results showed participants' evaluations and expectations of the motel. Among them, the booking, location, and price of the motel got great evaluations. The service and cleaning of the motel got good evaluations. However, the facilities, decoration, and security of the motel got poor evaluations, with a lot of participants dissatisfied. Therefore, the motel should listen to the expectations of Chinese tourists and believe it is worthwhile to make changes. It is recommended that the motel should make corresponding changes, especially in facilities, decoration and security, to further attract Chinese tourists

Global warming is a reality. Organisations realise their corporate responsibility to conduct their business with the 'future' in mind. Sustainability is having a green conscience and ensuring the steps you take today do not have a negative impact on the future. Green Human Resources Management is to promote the sustainable use of resources within business organisations. The aim of this research is to provide organisations with a Green Human Resource Management Strategy (GHRM). A qualitative approach was followed, and five participants interviewed. The researcher followed this approach to gain an in-depth understanding of business eco-friendly practices, to ascertain if they utilise HR to drive “green” in the organisation and engage employees. The study found that most organisations have implemented some eco-friendly practice and know the value of becoming a 'green' employer. However, the researcher identified a significant gap in that organisations are not aware of or lack the knowledge of how to utilise HR practices to get staff engaged in green policies and procedures. The researcher will strive to come up with various ideas and recommendation to the business on how they can utilise their HR practices to go green and engage their staff

Board diversity and performance of microfinance institutions (MFIS): Evidence from an emerging economy

    Get PDF
Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) are important service providers of finance for unbanked people and have experienced a high growth over the past decades. Alongside the staggering growth of microfinance around the world, there have been some serious complaints of unfair practices and low transparency in their affairs. Therefore, it is questionable whether microfinance contributes to a true reduction in worldwide poverty in the short or long terms. This study examines the corporate governance practices of microfinance institutions (MFIs) in India and their relationship with both financial performance and outreach for the period 2007 to 2012. Using unbalanced panel data for 575 firm-year observations, we report that the financial performance and outreach of Indian MFIs improves when they have international/donor representation on their board. Independent directors and client representatives on board perform favourably on financial performance but no impact on outreach. However, female directors on the board increases outreach to the poor people but decrease the financial performance. This study significantly contribute to a better understanding of board diversity of microfinance sector by providing empirical evidence from one of the dominant countries in South Asian region

The education and practice gap of accounting

    Get PDF
Educators nowadays may equip students for jobs that will not exist in the future (Shusterman, 2015) or jobs that do not exist yet. Many students face confession after graduating from tertiary education. Not knowing what to expect, wondering if they can use what they learn from school at work (Elmes, 2017). This paper aims to gather the opinion of accounting students regarding what they think are the demanded skills to get an accounting job after the completion of education. After reviewing the literature, a questionnaire was produced and sent to students at a tertiary institute to gain their opinion. Results were then compared to the skills required in practice by employers when recruiting. The key findings this study obtained were that there is a gap between what soft skills students think is important for an accounting position compared to that of practitioners’ view as stated by other researchers. Results indicate there is little difference of required hard skills (accounting techniques) from view points of students and professionals. Further studies should be done with larger samples to generalise more widely. Recommendations are that tertiary schools can partner with local business and accounting firms to provide internship program for all accounting major students. Also students should communicate with other accounting students, possible seniors or past students to gain their thoughts on what is currently lacking in the school education

Attributes of graduate entry nurses: An integrative review

    Get PDF
Second degree graduate entry (GEN) programmes transition graduates into the nursing workforce using the candidate’s first degree to fast track a career change. This presentation explores the attributes of graduate entry nurses as background to developing a graduate entry Master of Health Science degree in nursing. A qualitative integrative review approach was used to synthesise the findings of 24 published research reports on attributes of graduate entry nurses. Data bases searched included CINAHL, Proquest, Science Direct, and open source data bases included Pubmed, DOAJ and CORE, using keywords ‘graduate entry nursing’, ‘academic performance’, ‘readiness for practice’, ‘socialisation’, and ‘perceptions’. The Critical Appraisal Programmes (CASP, 2017) Checklist was used to ascertain the quality, relevance and validity of the articles identified in the database and other search approaches. A thematic synthesis approach (Thomas & Harden, 2008) was used to analyse the qualitative information presented as findings in the articles. This approach used three levels of analysis; coding of text line by line, the identification of descriptive themes, and the creation of analytical themes. Descriptive themes were used to group statements from the text of the articles, and analytical themes were developed as interpretive explanations created in the conceptual synthesis. The analytical themes developed included; confidence, motivation, and competence as learners; emotional intelligence within relationships; focus on research-based practice; and challenges for faculty. GEN students require professional socialisation that takes account of the attributes they bring to nursing. GENs need educational approaches and supervision that offer opportunities for critical reflection and peer support

Field-based initial teacher education in Aotearoa New Zealand: Opportunities, tensions and uncertainties.

    Get PDF
Field-based initial teacher education (FBITE) is one of the delivery models of an accredited qualification for early childhood education teachers that exists in Aotearoa New Zealand.  Students undertaking FBITE are immersed in a vocation and as such become apprentices to their future careers as teachers during their three year full-time degree programme.  Literature reports that this model is growing in popularity and provides significant opportunities for students who choose to undertake their initial teacher education qualification in this way. However, it is not without tensions and uncertainties for these student teachers.  This study sought to understand the opportunities students were given while participating in FBITE and also any of the uncertainties faced by student teachers as they balance their academic and practice based responsibilities alongside memberships of their differing Communities of Practice. It also investigated factors that impact on student wellbeing as they negotiate the inherent tensions that inform and guide notions of best practice aspirations.  Using a socio-cultural contextual framework and a qualitative survey this study captures student teachers insights about their initial teacher education training in a time where uncertainty prevails in the early childhood education sector in Aotearoa New Zealand.  The study found a mixture of optimism and security for some but apprehension and uncertainty for others as they negotiated their roles as student and employee/volunteer in their practice communities and academic institution.   The study recommended that despite field-based programmes being well established there is merit and necessity in further understanding the positioning of student teachers in such a programme, in particular student teacher resilience.  These findings are useful in the context of Initial Teacher Education providers as they review and redevelop current programmes to better meet the needs of the early childhood education sector and curriculum requirements
