Into the darkness: Bruce Springsteen’s musical representations of the night
Into the darkness: Bruce Springsteen’s musical representations of the night
Paper presented at the New Zealand Musicological Society Conference, 30 November - 2 December 2018, University of Canterbury, Christchurch, NZ.
This paper addressed representations of the night, as a lyrical trope, in the songs of Bruce Springsteen. In doing so, I argue that Springsteen validates the life experiences of those to and for whom he sings, as well as connects himself with a long-standing Western artistic tradition

Artist Statement: ‘If a place can be defined as relational, historical and concerned with identity, then a space which cannot be defined as relational, or historical, or concerned with identity will be a non-place.’
The French anthropologist Marc Augé, in his influential book Non-Places: An Introduction to an Anthropology of Supermodernity, cited examples of transient “non-place” as including airport lounges, supermarkets, shopping malls, and service stations etc.
In the work Gas Station #3, 23/3/17. I have attempted to abstract the building from its surroundings, to heighten the disconnect from place to non-place. Often in my work, there is a tension between what the photographs describe and what they reveal. I am exploiting the potential of photography’s indexicality - when it is at its most factual, is often when it is most obscure.

Discussing the notion of the auteur in contemporary music production
It has become increasingly common to see music creators take on multiple creative and
technical roles as they create music - roles that would have once been handled by several
individual specialists.
Due in part to improvements in the functionality and affordability of studio technology, the
fundamental concept of the recording studio has changed. This contemporary production
approach isn’t exclusive to the top tier of musicians and producers - bedroom producers are
beginning their musical journeys making complete works from their laptops.
‘The auteur’ is a term describing the accomplished producer-composer who exerts authority
over most, if not all, of the aspects of a production. The application of this term is not without
some degree of conflict within the scholarly community.
The term ‘auteur’ came into usage in French film criticism in the 1950s describing a director
who influences their films to the extent that they are considered to be the author. It has
since been adopted by other creative fields, including music. Some question how and when
authorship or auteurship can be unequivocally assigned, considering complex issues such
as collaboration and intertextuality; others wonder whether this credit should be assigned to
one person at all.
While the debate regarding authorship and auteurship is ongoing and duly recognised, the
dissertation assumes the position that the term ‘auteur’ is legitimate. Several accomplished
producer-composers who may be considered auteurs and their works are scrutinised, and a
methodological framework is presented through identifying a number of components that
these music producers attest to as contributing to their creative process. This framework
could be used to aid the progress of other producer-composers who are operating within
popular music styles
Classroom-based assessment of oral language proficiency of young ELLs in ESL contexts.
With increasing numbers of young English language learners (ELLs) entering schools in English-speaking countries, assessment of their English language proficiency has become important for screening, placement, and diagnostic purposes, as well as for ongoing formative and summative assessment. A key
assessment event for many teachers in New Zealand schools, particularly those with large numbers of ELLs, is the twice-yearly ‘ELLP Assessment’, in which ELLs’
language skills are rated against descriptors in the English Language Learning
Progressions (ELLP) (Ministry of Education, 2008). This assessment is high stakes because the results determine whether a school receives Ministry of Education funding for additional support of ELLs. As ELLs are placed in mainstream classrooms in New Zealand schools, it is important that mainstream teachers, who generally have no specialist training for working with ELLs, are equipped with strategies and tools for completing ELLP assessment effectively, in order to accurately assess ELLs’ language skills. For practicality, assessment strategies and tools also need to be appropriate for classroom-based assessment. This paper reviews the literature regards as being the use of, and issues associated with, classroom-ase oral language assessment of ELLs in ESL contexts. It then describes a number of guidelines, strategies, and tools from several English-speaking countries that have been designed to facilitate teacher assessment of ELLs’ oral language proficiency. Finally, the paper discusses the potential usefulness of these assessment guidelines or tools for teachers in the New Zealand context who are
required to complete ELLP assessment
Development of a NewGenome-Wide MLST scheme for high-resolution typing of diverse Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex strains
In this issue of EBioMedicine, Kohl and colleagues describe the development of a new core genome MLST scheme (cgMLST) for Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex strains based on a set of 2891 genes. Here, the application of the scheme to a number of tuberculosis surveillance studies is examined
