Using ePortfolios in early childhood education: Recalling, reconnecting, restarting and learning
Portfolios are widely used in New Zealand for documenting children’s learning; there is now an increasing
move to online ePortfolios. This article presents findings from a doctoral study which investigated the
impact of the introduction of ePortfolios in an early childhood education setting where traditional paperbased
portfolios were previously used as the formative assessment tool for children’s learning. The findings
demonstrate that a significant benefit of the ePortfolio system used in this study was the ways in which they
could support children to revisit their learning and become involved in their own formative assessment. This
is described as recalling, reconnecting and restarting. Through participating in these processes, children become
active contributors to their own learning journeys which is a significant factor of formative assessment

This exhibition is one I’ve been wanting to do for a while: to assemble a group of work made by friends and other artists whose work I admire or draw influence from and put it as a kind of preface to a group of current works of my own. I am affectionate and grateful to each of the works in this peculiar collection. Somehow, they represent aspects of my attitude and activities in painting; The gestural or painterly derivation from (photographic) observed or lived experience; the montage of melodramatic with everyday, the mythic with the familiar.
The absurdity of my longing for the idyllic or pristine while also my amusement in the disturbance of intrigue, transgressive play, disquieting mystery. I’ve found this kind of curious simultaneous contradiction in my journeys around Kirikiriroa (Hamilton) and the Waikato region. Despite all its agrarian character and reputation for the uncouth, it has a sultry beauty that I’ve grown to love

The mysterious near-UV absorber in the Venusian atmosphere
The absorption spectrum of two recently identified molecules in the atmosphere of Venus were simulated. The electronic absorption spectra of some small sulfur-containing molecules of atmospheric importance namely, sulfur dioxide (SO2), sulfur trioxide (SO3), hydrogen
sulfide (H2S), carbonyl sulfide (OCS), and carbon disulfide (CS2), have been simulated using a nuclear ensemble approach with the Newton-X1 package. The ensemble is based on Wigner sampling of vibrational frequencies calculated at the CCSD(T) level of theory
with the aug-cc-pV(T+d)Z basis set. The electronic excited state transition energies and oscillator strengths of each geometry in the ensemble are calculated with the EOM-CCSD, using correlation consistent basis sets with additional diffuse basis functions, denoted augcc-pV(X+d)Z+3. We find very good agreement between our calculated spectra and the available experimental spectra.

The effectiveness of progressive and traditional coaching strategies to improve iprint and jump performance across varying levels of maturation within a general youth population
Literature pertaining to youth development has identified the importance of understanding the physical, intellectual and emotional needs of adolescent youth. The purpose of this study was to compare the use of a ‘traditional’ and ‘progressive’ coaching style to train a general male youth population to improve sprint and jump performances, whilst assessing enjoyment to comment on long term application. Maximal sprint times, sprint kinematics, unilateral jump distances and repetitive tuck jump scores were measured alongside anthropometric variables to characterise performance. Results revealed significant (p>0.05) pre/post differences in anthropometric variables across all maturation groups, and each of the maturational levels displayed a tendency to favour a particular coaching or control condition. Pre-PHV groups responded most effectively to the progressive style of coaching, displaying improvements in horizontal jump performances, and -0.7 to -2.7% improvements in all sprint times, despite also showing the largest increase in tuck jump scores (25.8%). The circa-PHV group produced their greatest improvements in the traditional intervention, as displayed through significant improvements (p<0.05) in 20m sprint times and dominant-leg horizontal jump performance, whilst also revealing the greatest deterioration in tuck jump scores (14.2%). Post-PHV displayed the greatest improvements in the control setting, suggesting the natural benefits gained through adolescent development were greater than the influence of the training interventions. In conclusion, it is suggested that matching coaching strategies and delivery techniques to the period of biological maturation may have implications for both performance and athlete safety
The link between regional tidal stretch and lung injury during mechanical ventilation
The aim of this study was to assess the association between regional tidal volume (Vt), regional functional residual capacity (FRC), and the expression of genes linked with ventilator-induced lung injury. Two groups of BALB/c mice (n = 8 per group) were ventilated for 2 hours using a protective or injurious ventilation strategy, with free-breathing mice used as control animals. Regional Vt and FRC of the ventilated mice was determined by analysis of high-resolution four-dimensional computed tomographic images taken at baseline and after 2 hours of ventilation and corrected for the volume of the region (i.e., specific [s]Vt and specific [s]FRC). RNA concentrations of 21 genes in 10 different lung regions were quantified using a quantitative PCR array. sFRC at baseline varied regionally, independent of ventilation strategy, whereas sVt varied regionally depending on ventilation strategy. The expression of IL-6 (P = 0.04), Ccl2 (P < 0.01), and Ang-2 (P < 0.05) was associated with sVt but not sFRC. The expression of seven other genes varied regionally (IL-1β and RAGE [receptor for advanced glycation end products]) or depended on ventilation strategy (Nfe2l2 [nuclear factor erythroid-derived 2 factor 2], c-fos, and Wnt1) or both (TNF-α and Cxcl2), but it was not associated with regional sFRC or sVt. These observations suggest that regional inflammatory responses to mechanical ventilation are driven primarily by tidal stretch

Understanding changes in teacher beliefs and identity formation: A case study of three novice teachers in Hong Kong
Novice teachers often undergo an identity shift from learner to teacher. Along this process, their instructional beliefs change considerably which in turn affect their teacher identity formation. Drawing on
data collected mainly through interviews with three novice English teachers formore than one year, the present study examines their firstyear teaching experience in Hong Kong secondary schools, focusing
on changes of their English teaching beliefs and the impact of these changes on their identity construction. Findings reveal that while the teachers’ initial teaching beliefs were largely shaped in their prior school learning and learning-to-teach experience, these beliefs changed and were reshaped a great deal when encountering various contextual realities, and these changes further influenced their views on their teacher identity establishment, unfortunately in a more negative
than positive direction. The study sheds light on the importance of institutional support in affording opportunities for novice teachers’ workplace learning and professional development
