Programming a Microcontroller to Drive a Fisher & Paykel SmartDrive™ Washing Machine Motor to Power a Go-Kart.
Microcontrollers are one of the basic building blocks of the “Internet of Things”. In this paper, I describe the tools and processes needed to program a STM32F302R8 microcontroller to drive a Fisher & Paykel SmartDrive™ brushless direct current motor. The motor is used to power a go-kart. The STM32F302R8 is an ARM® Cortex®-M4 microcontroller, programmed with the “C” programming language. The F&P SmartDrive™ motor is a brushless direct current motor, which relies on a microcontroller unit to provide commutation for the coils
Establishing a learner identity: Young digital citizens and the pursuit of a democratic and empowering Early Childhood Education.
As the 21st century progresses, there is an ever-growing population of digital tech-nology users. For many, this use begins in their early childhood years with oppor-tunities to access and experience digital technologies in their home and wider world. These experiences are the foundations for children’s socially and culturally mediated digital funds of knowledge. Digital funds of knowledge can include dis-positions, skills and experiences in the use of digital technologies in meaningful, valued and responsible ways that reflects a digital citizenship. For these digital funds of knowledge to be useful, others in the young child’s world need to be aware of and validate the children through a democratic lens. This includes seeing and treating the child as a valued and capable learner who is able, and should be entitled to, direct and participate with others in their learning encounters. In the context of early childhood education (ECE), it requires teachers and the learning environment to be democratic by being receptive and responsive to young chil-dren’s learning capability and that can include their digital funds of knowledge. In this chapter, the teacher’s ability to be receptive and responsive to children’s digi-tal funds of knowledge is regarded as a digital pedagogy that invites and supports children’s growth as digital citizens by promoting principles of digital fluency. This chapter draws on case studies undertaken with young children, their families and teachers in their ECE settings in Aotearoa New Zealand. The findings demon-strate the importance of a digital pedagogy and its implications for democratic teaching and learning

Community-based Engineering research: Why aging New Zealanders Living in rural need better transport service
With the increased population of the elderly, providing more active public transportation for an older population is a global issue. This study investigates the travel behaviour and mode choice attitudes of people aged 65 and older and improves transport accessibility by proposing a demand responsive transport (DRT) service in New Zealand (NZ) rural areas and small towns. A case study was conducted at the Thames, Waikato to investigate the travel behaviour of the elderly and explore the presence of heterogeneity in transport mode choice. Thames is located at the Thames-Coromandel District with a high proportion (27.1%) of people aged 65 and older. Due to the popularity of Thames for people aged 65 and over, the population of this age group in Thames is increasing and predicted to increase to 43% in the year 2043. Therefore, the demand for alternative modes of transport, especially once owning or driving a private motor vehicle is no longer a viable option. This study explores the existing problems that the elderly face regarding transportation in Thames and investigates possible public transport improvements to help keep the people aged 65 and over able to travel locally within Thames. To achieve the objective of this study, a revealed preference survey was examined for exploring various types of elderly’s travel behaviour and mode choice. A rank-ordered logit model was adopted using data analysis on the choices of individuals over various mode choice options and the critical components of effective DRT service implementation for older people in NZ rural areas and small cities. The results show that as age increases the number of people using their vehicles for transport around Thames decreases and reliance on family or friends. This travel behaviour is especially the case in the major areas of Thames further away from the Thames CBD and shops where walking, cycling or mobility scooters are not a viable option due to long walking distance and need to carry groceries. The destinations that the elderly visit dictates to some extent the type of transport chosen. For example, from the results revealed that the majority of elderly make weekly trips for shopping but modes of transport such as the bus, walking, cycling and mobility scooters are not favourable for shopping in all cases due to the limit on weight, size and quantity that can be physically carried using these transport options. The results are also supporting a DRT service in NZ rural areas and small towns. For further research into a DRT service is justified where the elderly life also restricts the mode of transport used due to travel distance and topography
An investigation into the impact of coaching strategies with respect to physical and performance characteristics of male youth of varying biological maturation
This thesis will be presented as two standalone experimental chapters which will culminate in a thesis discussion linking the two papers under the overarching concept of maturation in male youth. Chapter 2 is currently under review in ‘Cogent Medicine’, and the intention of Chapter 2 is to identify physical, injury and performance-based differences between maturational groups within a general school-based population of 8 youth. These observed differences within Chapter 2 will then inform the methodology and coaching strategies utilised within Chapter 3, which will investigate the effectiveness of various coaching methods in order to maximise adaptation, motor ability and injury prevention within each maturational group. The outcome of this thesis hopes to inform practitioners as to how they can best implement their training programmes to maximise learning and adaptation across a range of biological maturation levels. Rather than just knowing when training should occur which has been investigated previously, it is hoped this thesis will provide insight into how coaching should occur to maximise learning within this diverse adolescent population. Due to the layout of this thesis with the individual papers, there is an element of content repetition throughout Chapters 1,2,3 and 4 which needs to be acknowledged, although the various contexts provides uniqueness throughout
Book reviewed: Sharma, P. & Barrett, B. (2018). Best practices for blended learning. English Teaching professional: Pavilion Publishing and Media Ltd: United Kingdom.
Sharma and Barrett, in their introduction, clearly mention that their book is designed to “provide a comprehensive, practical handbook of use to language teachers, academic managers, teacher trainers and institution heads around the world” (p. 8), thereby emphasising their target readership. The authors appear to adopt an objective and realistic approach to the notion of a BL environment. This is particularly visible in a few of the chapters such as in Chapter 1 (‘What is Blended Learning?’) which addresses various terms that have been used to discuss BL such as, disruptive, redundant, sustainable, mobile, culture and flux (p. 20), in Chapter 3 (‘Research’) where, with all the positive aspects of BL, they state clearly that “Any claims about the superiority of BL need to be taken cautiously’’ (p. 39) and in Chapter 6 this objectivity is once again addressed with the chapter titled ‘Challenges’
