Would you like to showcase or demonstrate a tool or activity to others? These can be anything related to learning & teaching, research, admin, industry engagement or other!
Demo Corner is a slot for hands-on demonstrations or short workshops where you can demonstrate a certain tool or activity rather than specific collaborative projects.
In this session DFs are given the platform to share best practices with the aim to learn from each other’s experiences and share knowledge to increase awareness of collaboration opportunities, skills, approaches and capabilities within the network.

Transforming the dark: Using colour to compose sound in dark matter
Dark Matter is a performance with light as the main character and a soundscape composed by Dr Jeremy Mayall with Martyn Roberts. The theatre space is extremely dark with all care taken to eliminate all visible light. The audience, unable to even see their hands in front of them, are seated in a void, viewing low beams and shapes of light, with ghostly movements from two dancers resembling wraiths from another world. The sound forms an integral part of the performance; because so much has been taken away from them visually, the heightened sensory experience of the audience amplifies the sonic and visual perception. In this article, Mayall and Roberts discuss that process and describe the impact on the audience of the work as a whole

Investigation and analysis of the transitional care needs of patients following hospital discharge
The transitional care model ensures the continuity of care and has significant impact on patients’ health outcomes. Transitional care services need to be developed based on patients’ needs. This study aimed to investigate the care needs of patients following hospital discharge. This quantitative cross-sectional survey was conducted among 484 patients using a questionnaire to investigate patients’ transitional care needs, covering the types of the services and patient preferred services providers. The investigation revealed that only 17.98% (n = 87) of participants were aware that the tertiary hospital provided transitional care following hospital discharge, even though more than half of participants (n = 265) expressed a preference for doctors and nurses from tertiary hospitals to provide this. Regarding types of transitional care service, 46.9% participants (n = 227) considered health education to be their priority, followed by medication guidance (35.33%), and rehabilitation needs (34.71%)
Implementing project based learning and tools to develop employability skills for early tertiary learners in engineering education
From recent studies and research, it is clearly defined that 21st century industries/employers seek engineering graduates that have employability skills. From the new trends, major emphasis on practical applications compared to theory is given in engineering education. The pathway from education to employability is critical for an early tertiary learner to establish their career. Currently, industry bodies are actively sourcing graduates that can deliver employability skills such as, professional communication, problem solving and teamwork competency and many more. Learning technical and subject knowledge is essential in engineering, however employers also strive for candidates that can deliver a large range of professional/employability skills (Mishra, 2016). In order to overcome and adapt to new challenges and problematic scenarios, employers look for exceptional employability attributes. This excessive demand of professionally equipped graduates has caused the desire of many universities and institutes to develop their learners with strong theoretical knowledge and embed graduate attributes into courses through assignments and projects (Zaharim et al., 2010). Project based learning (PjBL) has found to be an authentic, modernised and successful teaching and learning pedagogy that has supported this shift from disciplinary theoretical knowledge to practical learning (Shekhar, 2014). This paper presents the overview and implementation of PjBL and educational tools called Rauemi Ipurangi – an online interactive activity-based resource. Also, two imperative questionnaires are designed to gather feedback from the early tertiary learners on the competency of their employability skills to analyse and evaluate the students’ performance. Rauemi Ipurangi is created and developed to focus on three key employability attributes: teamwork, communication and wellbeing. The resource also comprises of cultural/indigenous Māori frameworks known as the model of Te Whare Tapa Wha by M. Durie to promote diversified employability environment in New Zealand. Learner profile & employability skills self-assessment questionnaires are used to collect feedback from the students throughout the semester, to analyse their experience in attaining graduate attributes earlier in their year 1 courses of their engineering programme
Player heart rate responses and pony external load measures during 16-goal Polo
This dataset provides information pertaining to the spatiotemporal stresses experienced by Polo ponies in play and the cardiovascular responses to these demands by Polo players, during 16-goal Polo. Data were collected by player-worn GPS units and paired heart rate monitors, across a New Zealand Polo season. The dataset comprises observations from 160 chukkas of Open Polo, and is presented as per chukka per game (curated) and in per effort per player (raw) formats. Data for distance, speed, and high intensity metrics are presented and are further categorised into five equine-based speed zones, in accordance with previous literature. The purpose of this dataset is to provide a detailed quantification of the load experienced by Polo players and their ponies at the highest domestic performance level in New Zealand, as well as advancing the scope of previous Polo literature that has employed GPS or heart rate monitoring technologies. This dataset may be of interest to equine scientists and trainers, veterinary practitioners, and sports scientists. An exemplar template is provided to facilitate the adoption of this data collection approach by other practitioner
A review of equestrian polo and a methodology for testing the mechanical properties of the mallet
Equestrian polo is struggling to grow and attract young players due to the perception it is a game played by royals and the rich only, and is not a real sport. This study highlights the high level of skill and athletic challenge faced by the players. Literature is scarce for polo despite its global appeal and the high value of the game in terms of historical reach and investment by the polo community. The game is also unique in sports due to the multiplicity of interactions such as player–pony, pony–ground, player–mallet, and mallet–ball. This work introduces the basics of the game with a graphical interpretation of the motion of the mallet during play. The mallet is constructed of natural materials, the shaft from a rattan cane whilst the handle and head are crafted from hardwood. Using a materials analysis approach, a testing methodology is proposed that will enable quantifiable data to be produced based on the properties and performance of the mallet. The purpose of this is to enable benchmarking of the mallet based on the material properties and their assembled response to the testing. Quasi-static load tests using a universal testing instrument are followed by dynamic testing using inertial sensors. All testing is done in planes chosen to replicate the common lines of action of match play. The quasi-static tests enabled a value for stiffness (k), and the dynamic testing enabled a damping coefficient (c) to be calculated. These quantities will enable a quantitative measure for the properties and performance of any mallet and thereby remove the subjective nature of assessment. Subsequent study will then determine how these data correlate with the performance in play, as well as impact, trajectory, and fatigue responses
