    Development of innovative cross-disciplinary engineering showcase

    The development of engineering education relies substantially on interactive showcases and practical knowledge. The cross-disciplinary engineering showcase is designed to be fully interactive by having user input, producing a tangible output, and to understand distinct elements from each of the engineering disciplines such as, civil, mechanical and electrical (CME). The showcase operates from the input of mechanical rotational energy by the user pedalling the exercycle. Mechanical energy is then transferred to the pump via a gear train, which converts the user input of 30 rpm to the optimal pump operating speed of 2900 rpm. Further, it is used to pump water from the lower eservoir to the upper reservoir via one of the three flow paths, which the user can select by opening or closing flow valves. Once the water reaches a given height, it then flows back to the lower reservoir via a micro-hydro generator. As a result, it generates electrical energy stored in a power bank that can be used by the user to charge a digital device. Also, the showcase has a QR code to digital media, which will provide an additional explanation/exposition of the presented engineering principles to the user/students. The aim of this project is to develop a cross- disciplinary engineering showcase to enhance student learnings by interpreting the CME engineering principles in schools, institutes, and universities

    : Social media play an increasingly important role as both a means of communication and a source of information. Furthermore, social media provide a variety of time and cost-efficient, as well as participant-friendly, communication and networking channels, which expand the research repertoire in terms of recruitment and conducting interviews. The purpose of this paper is to broaden researchers’ understanding of the potential of using social media to facilitate qualitative research, and to guide them in the selection and use of social media channels considering the contextual differences. This paper adopts a qualitative methodology aimed at reflecting on the researcher’s experience of recruiting participants and conducting interviews using social media. The paper is the first of its kind to explore the potential of incorporating social media as a tool in qualitative research while considering contextual and cultural factors

    When musicians collaborate, a conversation takes place. They may not necessarily come from the same background, or even speak the same language, but when they listen to each other play and musically engage with a mutual respect and openness, a true improvisational and conversational collaborative flow is created. No single person controls how the work develops: the direction of the flow of this musical output is collectively determined through all the participants’ contributions. This creative process sees the participants as sonic explorers navigating and traversing the contours of a cross-cultural landscape, allowing unique moments of sound to be the catalyst for the (re)creation of new fusions and possible future collaborations. Presented as a discussion between composer Dr Jeremy Mayall and renowned taonga puoro practitioner Horomona Horo, this chapter looks at how their collaborative creative practice-based research projects have developed and reveal the sorts of musical interactions that transpire when performer/composers from both Western contemporary and Indigenous music backgrounds are given the opportunity to spend time together and collaborate. In this chapter, Horo and Mayall reflect on the processes that have informed their collaborations since meeting in 2008, and how their ongoing practice has developed through a range of projects that serve as case studies and discussion points throughout. This chapter aims to explore the centrality of relationship building and the impact that this kind of cross-cultural engagement can have on the ways in which musicians from different backgrounds can thrive

    A unified classification model to insider threats to information security

    Prior work on insider threat classification has adopted a range of definitions, constructs, and terminology, making it challenging to compare studies. We address this issue by introducing a unified insider threat classification model built through a comprehensive and systematic review of prior work. An insider threat can be challenging to predict, as insiders may utilise motivation, creativity, and ingenuity. Understanding the different types of threats to information security (and cybersecurity) is crucial as it helps organisations develop the right preventive strategies. This paper presents a thematic analysis of the literature on the types of insider threats to cybersecurity to provide cohesive definitions and consistent terminology of insider threats. We demonstrate that the insider threat exists on a continuum of accidental, negligent, mischievous, and malicious behaviour. The proposed insider threat classification can help organisations to identify, implement, and contribute towards improving their cybersecurity strategies

    Instant messaging and the facilitation of collaborative, student-led learning and teaching-support: The NZCEL EAP scenario

    Abstract In the last couple of decades, the increased use of technology in the education sector has led to smartphone use becoming more prevalent in supporting students’ learning. Apart from applications (apps) specifically designed for language educational purposes, such as Duolingo, there are also instant messaging apps that are not specifically designed for education purposes, but that can be useful in supporting learners. These include instant messaging apps such as, WhatsApp and WeChat. Instead of relegating phone app use to merely a source of entertainment and distraction, teachers increasingly use them as a vital form of communication to enhance education, including language learning. Apps have thus shifted from a tangential position to the forefront of the learning space. For the purposes of this research project, WeChat was used as the messaging app. This article focuses on the initial findings of a pilot study and concentrates on the perceived purposes for the participants’ posts as they relate to the use of the app as a tool for collaboration, peer-support, and knowledge sharing. Data was gathered through an online survey, semi-structured interviews, and an analysis of the WeChat posts. Analysis of the posts and comments made by students during the interviews suggest that the tool formed a vital link between them, their classmates and teachers, and, at times, served as a social platform underlying the key educational purposes of the programme
