Hypoxia‐inducible factor and bacterial infections in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
COPD is a seriously disabling respiratory condition that
inexorably progresses to disability and mortality. It
affects approximately 10% of the population globally
with a greater prevalence at advanced ages. Airway bacterial infections complicate the disease course in most COPD patients, leading to increased symptoms, more
rapid decline in lung function, acute exacerbations and
reduced quality of life. With increasing bacterial resistance to antibiotics and adverse effects of conventional treatments, new effective non-antibiotic antimicrobial therapies are urgently needed to manage COPD. Hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α is an important transcriptional regulator of cellular responses to hypoxia, oxidants and inflammation, and is overexpressed in the lungs of COPD patients. Recent evidence shows that
increased HIF-1α expression can upregulate the
platelet-activating factor receptor (PAFR) on the airway
epithelial surface that is increased in smokers and particularly COPD patients. The receptor is utilized by
PAFR-dependent bacteria (Streptococcus pneumoniae,
Haemophilus influenzae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa)
to induce infection in both the respiratory and gastrointestinal (GI) tracts. However, the importance and mechanism of HIF-1α in augmenting PAFR-dependent
bacterial infections in COPD are poorly understood.
Here, we review the evidence for the roles of local tissue hypoxia-induced inflammation, HIF-1α and PAFR in
facilitating bacterial infections in COPD. Blocking PAFR
may provide a novel antimicrobial approach to manage
bacterial infections in COPD

Building connections with new teaching and learning approaches
This study is based on the teaching and learning approaches to build good and healthy relations within the classroom. One of the best approach to make success in this research is students centred learning (flipped classroom). Now a day to create an effective teaching and learning environment, student engagement and motivation is the most important aspect. We have considered group assignments and group project-based tasks to validate our approaches. Learners’ are getting more involved in class when they are given group assignments and projects instead of individual tasks. Having healthy and comfortable learning and working environment in regular classes, we found good influence on learners to develop strong bonds and better understanding between fellow learners
Interacting in a culturally diverse classroom: Information Technology students' perceptions
In the past few decades, there has been a steady influx of immigrants into New Zealand, both into the education sector as students, and into the work sector as skilled employees. To prepare our students for future work, we encourage them to actively interact with, learn from, and work with peers, as they would in a real-life workplace situation. With the increasing proportion of students of different cultural backgrounds in tertiary and higher education, educators consider the ability of students to function effectively and respectfully in a culturally diverse classroom. In this paper, we performed a mixed methods study at the Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec), New Zealand, which involved a survey and interviews of students specialising in Information Technology (IT). The aim was to analyse students’ perceptions on interacting with peers from different cultural backgrounds. We discuss the results of our study and factors that are likely to promote intercultural interaction and make suggestions for future research

Playground series exhibited in the International Photography Awards 2020
In 2020 the International Photography Awards received a total of 13,000 entries from 120 countries and is pleased to declare that Mark Purdom was awarded Honorable Mention in the professional category for his series 'Playground'.
Artist statement -
The series Playground looks at children's play spaces and explores the notion - if we make these spaces too "safe" are we actually developing our children's ability to manage risk themselves.
“I am convinced that standardised play equipment is dangerous. When the distance between all the rungs on the climbing net or the ladder is exactly the same, the child has no need to concentrate on where he puts his feet. This lesson cannot be carried over into all the knobbly and asymmetrical forms with which one is confronted throughout life.”

Sustainability and diversity of national sport organisation revenue
In the current economic environment, financial management is crucial for non-profit organisations. At a time of reduced government support and increasing competition among non-profit organisations, there is pressure to provide more services with fewer resources and adopt commercial approaches to obtain funds. National sport organisations (NSOs), as non-profits, are organisations at the nexus of adopting multiple approaches of funding. NSOs need to acquire funding in a strategic and competitive approach to obtain ongoing sustainable income. The aim of this research is to develop a framework for the study of membership revenue, the main funding stream, of NSOs in New Zealand. This study analysed the concentration risk of multiple revenue sources and the strategies used by organisations to obtain membership income. The membership revenue was evaluated against participation and spectator numbers to identify the dominant strategies used. The findings of this research show the strategies that are used by NSOs to obtain membership funds and provide a comparison for NSOs to follow
